How to Ask About Internet Speed and Reliability in Mandarin Chinese

Learn to ask 'Is the internet fast?' in Mandarin and check whether a connection is reliable, using 快, 慢, 稳定, and 网.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you arrive at a hotel, café, or new apartment in a Chinese-speaking place, one of the first practical questions is whether the internet works well. In Mandarin, the key word is 网 (wǎng), which means 'network' or 'internet' in everyday speech. To ask about speed, you use the adjective 快 (kuài, fast) or 慢 (màn, slow). To ask about reliability, you use 稳定 (wěndìng, stable/reliable). This lesson teaches you short, natural questions and answers so you can check a connection before you rely on it. You will also learn how to ask about Wi-Fi specifically, since 网 can refer to mobile data or Wi-Fi depending on context. All phrases use simplified Chinese and pinyin with tone marks.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether the internet is fast or slow in Mandarin.
    • ask whether a connection is stable or reliable.
    • understand and give simple answers about internet speed and reliability.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    网快吗?

    Is the internet fast?

    wǎng kuài ma?

General question about network speed. 网 can mean internet, mobile data, or Wi-Fi depending on context.

    网慢吗?

    Is the internet slow?

    wǎng màn ma?

Asks whether the connection is slow. Useful when a page or video keeps loading.

    网稳定吗?

    Is the internet stable/reliable?

    wǎng wěndìng ma?

稳定 means steady and not dropping out. This asks about reliability, not just speed.

    有Wi-Fi吗?

    Is there Wi-Fi?

    yǒu Wi-Fi ma?

Wi-Fi is commonly used as-is in Mandarin. This asks whether Wi-Fi is available at all.

    网很快。

    The internet is very fast.

    wǎng hěn kuài.

A simple positive answer. 很 (hěn) links the subject and adjective in a plain statement.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask a yes/no question about the internet, put the noun 网 first, then an adjective, then the question particle 吗 (ma). Pattern: 网 + adjective + 吗? For example, 网快吗? (wǎng kuài ma?, Is the internet fast?) and 网稳定吗? (wǎng wěndìng ma?, Is the internet stable?). To answer, you can repeat the adjective with 很: 网很快。 (wǎng hěn kuài., The internet is very fast.) or 网很慢。 (wǎng hěn màn., The internet is very slow.) For reliability, say 网很稳定。 (wǎng hěn wěndìng., The internet is very stable.) To make a negative answer, use 不 (bù): 网不快。 (wǎng bú kuài., The internet is not fast.) Note that 不 changes to bú before a fourth-tone syllable like kuài.

    When to use it

Use 网快吗? when you mainly care about speed, such as streaming video or downloading files. Use 网稳定吗? when you care about whether the connection drops, such as for video calls or online work. If you specifically mean Wi-Fi rather than mobile data, say Wi-Fi instead of 网: Wi-Fi快吗? (Wi-Fi kuài ma?, Is the Wi-Fi fast?) or Wi-Fi稳定吗? (Wi-Fi wěndìng ma?, Is the Wi-Fi stable?). In a hotel or café, you can first ask 有Wi-Fi吗? (yǒu Wi-Fi ma?, Is there Wi-Fi?) and then ask about speed or stability. Keep questions short; 吗 questions are polite and neutral in most everyday situations.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好,这里有Wi-Fi吗?

Hello, is there Wi-Fi here?nǐ hǎo, zhèlǐ yǒu Wi-Fi ma?
    B

    有。网很快,也很稳定。

Yes. The internet is fast and also very stable.yǒu. wǎng hěn kuài, yě hěn wěndìng.
    A

    太好了。网快吗?我要开视频会议。

Great. Is the internet fast? I need to start a video meeting.tài hǎo le. wǎng kuài ma? wǒ yào kāi shìpín huìyì.
    B

    快,但是晚上有时候会慢。

It is fast, but sometimes it gets slow in the evening.kuài, dànshì wǎnshang yǒushíhou huì màn.

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, 网 is the everyday word for internet access, and Wi-Fi is widely understood as a loanword. When asking staff, a short question with 吗 is normal and polite; adding 请问 (qǐngwèn, may I ask) at the start makes it more formal, as in 请问,网快吗? (qǐngwèn, wǎng kuài ma?). In Taiwan, people also say 網路 (wǎnglù) for 'internet' and may use 訊號 (xùnhào) for 'signal.' If you are unsure whether the connection is Wi-Fi or mobile data, ask 是Wi-Fi还是手机网? (shì Wi-Fi háishì shǒujī wǎng?, Is it Wi-Fi or mobile data?).

    One thing to watch for

Saying 网是快吗? by adding 是 (shì) before the adjective, as if Chinese used a linking verb like English 'is.'

Try this instead: Do not add 是 before a simple adjective in this pattern. Say 网快吗? (wǎng kuài ma?) or 网很快。 (wǎng hěn kuài.). Use 是 only for identification, such as 这是Wi-Fi吗? (zhè shì Wi-Fi ma?, Is this Wi-Fi?).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Is the internet stable?' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    网稳定吗? (wǎng wěndìng ma?)

This uses the pattern 网 + adjective + 吗. 稳定 (wěndìng) means stable or reliable. You could also ask Wi-Fi稳定吗? if you mean Wi-Fi specifically.

2Someone says 网很慢。 (wǎng hěn màn.) What does it mean?

    Show a sample answer

    The internet is very slow.

很 (hěn) links the subject 网 and the adjective 慢 (màn, slow). This is a plain statement, not a question.

3Translate into Mandarin: 'Is there Wi-Fi? Is the Wi-Fi fast?'

    Show a sample answer

    有Wi-Fi吗?Wi-Fi快吗? (yǒu Wi-Fi ma? Wi-Fi kuài ma?)

The first question asks about availability with 有 (yǒu). The second asks about speed with 快 (kuài) and 吗. You can also replace Wi-Fi with 网 if you mean the internet generally.

    Take this with you

Use 网 + adjective + 吗? to ask about internet speed or reliability: 网快吗? (Is it fast?) and 网稳定吗? (Is it stable?). Answer with 很 + adjective, and use 不 for negatives.
