Korean for Travel: Speak Clearly at Ticket Counters

Prepare the key phrases before you speak

Start by memorising the core patterns from the lessons. For a one-way ticket, use the destination followed by 가는 표 한 장 주세요. For example, the source phrase is 시내 중심가 가는 표 한 장 주세요. If the destination is obvious, shorten it to 편도 표 한 장 주세요. For two tickets, change 한 장 to 두 장. For a round-trip ticket, say the destination plus 까지 왕복 표 주세요, as in 공항까지 왕복 표 주세요. To ask the price, use 표가 얼마예요? or add a destination: 서울까지 표가 얼마예요? Practise saying each phrase aloud slowly, then at a natural speed. Pay attention to the counter 장 for tickets and the particle 까지 for destinations. These small words carry the meaning, so drill them until they feel automatic.

Handle the harder turn: when the agent asks for details

The real challenge comes when the agent asks a follow-up question you did not prepare for. For example, after you ask for a round-trip ticket, the agent might ask 돌아오는 날짜와 시간이 어떻게 되세요? (What are your return date and time?). You need to state a return time using the pattern from the lesson: put the time before 돌아오는 표로 주세요. If you did not catch the question, use 다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요 (Please say that one more time) or 천천히 말씀해 주세요 (Please speak slowly). Then answer with a specific time, such as 내일 오전 일곱 시에 돌아오는 표로 주세요. If you need to confirm the price, ask 표가 얼마예요? again. Staying calm and using these repair phrases keeps the conversation moving.
