In this workshop, you will practice a short shopping exchange in Spanish. You will learn to ask the price of one item or several items, understand a simple price answer, ask the seller to repeat it, and ask whether the seller has change. The native examples come from a recorded dialogue between a customer and a seller. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment. Use the tasks to speak aloud and check your own answers.

Asking the price of one item or several items

To ask the price of one item you are holding or pointing at, say «¿Cuánto cuesta esto?» which means “How much does this cost?” If you know the item’s name, you can replace esto with the noun. For a feminine noun like camisa, say «¿Cuánto cuesta esta camisa?» meaning “How much does this shirt cost?” For a masculine noun like libro, you would say este libro. When you point at more than one item, use the plural verb form: «¿Cuánto cuestan estos?» meaning “How much do these cost?” Notice that cuesta changes to cuestan. Practice saying each question aloud, paying attention to the stressed syllables: KWES-tah and KWES-tahn.

Understanding the price and asking for a repeat

In the recorded dialogue, the seller answers «Cuesta doscientos pesos.» This means “It costs two hundred pesos.” If you do not catch the price, you can say «¿Me lo puede repetir, por favor?» which means “Can you repeat it for me, please?” The seller then repeats: «Sí, doscientos pesos. ¿Tiene cambio?» This means “Yes, two hundred pesos. Do you have change?” The question ¿Tiene cambio? is useful when you need to know if the seller can break a larger bill. Practice listening to the price and repeating it back silently or aloud. Then practice asking for a repeat. You can play both the customer and the seller roles with the audio.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Buenas tardes, ¿cuánto cuesta esta camisa?

Good afternoon, how much does this shirt cost?
    B

    Cuesta doscientos pesos.

    It costs two hundred pesos.
    A

¿Me lo puede repetir, por favor?

Can you repeat it for me, please?
    B

    Sí, doscientos pesos. ¿Tiene cambio?

Yes, two hundred pesos. Do you have change?
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask for the price

Imagine you are in a shop and you see a shirt you like. You want to ask the seller how much it costs. Use the recorded lines to guide you.

Your task: Say aloud the question «¿Cuánto cuesta esta camisa?» Then listen to the seller’s answer in the recording: «Cuesta doscientos pesos.» Repeat the price aloud: doscientos pesos. Then ask the seller to repeat it: «¿Me lo puede repetir, por favor?» Finally, listen to the seller’s reply: «Sí, doscientos pesos. ¿Tiene cambio?» and answer silently or aloud with sí or no depending on whether you have change.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the correct price

You will hear the seller say a price. Your job is to choose the correct price from two options. Use the recorded line «Cuesta doscientos pesos.» as your reference.

Your task: Listen to the recording of the seller saying «Cuesta doscientos pesos.» Then choose the correct price: A) doscientos pesos, B) trescientos pesos. Say your choice aloud. Then listen again and repeat the price. Next, imagine the seller asks «¿Tiene cambio?» Decide if you have change and answer sí or no.

    3

Recall with correct roles: customer and seller

Now you will play both roles. First, you are the customer asking about a shirt. Then, you are the seller answering and asking about change. Use only the lines you have practiced.

Your task: As the customer, say: «Buenas tardes, ¿cuánto cuesta esta camisa?» Then, as the seller, answer: «Cuesta doscientos pesos.» As the customer, ask for a repeat: «¿Me lo puede repetir, por favor?» As the seller, repeat: «Sí, doscientos pesos. ¿Tiene cambio?» Finally, as the customer, answer sí or no. Say the whole exchange aloud without looking at the text if you can.

    Common questions

What is the difference between cuesta and cuestan?

Cuesta is used when you ask about one item, like «¿Cuánto cuesta esta camisa?» Cuestan is used when you ask about more than one item, like «¿Cuánto cuestan estos?» The verb changes to match the number of items.

How do I ask the seller to repeat the price?

You can say «¿Me lo puede repetir, por favor?» which means “Can you repeat it for me, please?” This is polite and works in shops, markets, and taxis. The seller may then repeat the price and ask «¿Tiene cambio?» meaning “Do you have change?”
