Practice saying which foods you love, which you can't live without, and where you prefer to eat, using short recorded Spanish lines.

In this workshop you will practice talking about food in Spanish. You will learn how to say a food you love so much you can't live without it, how to say you love something, how to say you are not a fan of something, and how to say where you prefer to eat. Each key phrase is shown with a recording reference so you can hear the exact Spanish and repeat it. You will then use these phrases in three short speaking tasks: a guided exchange, a reply comprehension task, and a recall task where you play both roles. You can do all tasks alone with the audio, and you can check your answers with the provided self-checks.

    Talking about foods you love

To say you love a food very strongly, you can use a phrase that means it enchants you. For example, «Me encanta la comida picante.» means 'I love spicy food.' This is stronger than simply saying you like it. If you want to say you love a food so much that you cannot imagine life without it, use «No puedo vivir sin la pasta.», which means 'I can't live without pasta.' Notice the word 'sin', which means 'without'. You can replace 'la pasta' with another food you love, but for now practice the exact lines. Listen to the recording, repeat out loud, and focus on the rhythm. The phrase in «Me encanta la comida picante.» uses 'me encanta', which literally means 'it enchants me', but in everyday speech it simply means 'I love it.'

Saying you are not a fan and expressing preferences

If you don't like something, you can say you are not a fan. «No soy fan de la comida picante.» means 'I'm not a fan of spicy food.' This is a casual and widely understood way to express dislike. You can also use it for other foods by changing the food word, but here we practice the exact line. To talk about where you prefer to eat, use «Prefiero comer en casa.», which means 'I prefer to eat at home.' The verb 'prefiero' means 'I prefer'. In a conversation, someone might ask if you like spicy food, as in «¿Te gusta la comida picante?», which means 'Do you like spicy food?' You can answer with «No, no soy fan de la comida picante. Prefiero la comida suave.», which means 'No, I'm not a fan of spicy food. I prefer mild food.' Notice how the speaker uses both the dislike phrase and a preference. Then the other person might ask about eating out, as in «Entiendo. ¿Y te gusta comer fuera?», which means 'I understand. And do you like eating out?' You can answer with «Sí, me encanta, pero no puedo vivir sin la pasta.», which means 'Yes, I love it, but I can't live without pasta.' This combines a positive answer with a strong love for a specific food.

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    ¿Te gusta la comida picante?

    Do you like spicy food?
    B

No, no soy fan de la comida picante. Prefiero la comida suave.

No, I'm not a fan of spicy food. I prefer mild food.
    A

Entiendo. ¿Y te gusta comer fuera?

I understand. And do you like eating out?
    B

Sí, me encanta, pero no puedo vivir sin la pasta.

Yes, I love it, but I can't live without pasta.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: Answer questions about food

You will hear two questions in Spanish. After each question, pause the audio and answer out loud using the phrases you have practiced. You can play both roles if you like, but focus on answering as yourself first.

Your task: Listen to «¿Te gusta la comida picante?» and answer out loud. Then listen to «Entiendo. ¿Y te gusta comer fuera?» and answer out loud. Use the phrases from the recordings to express your own preferences. For example, you can say you are not a fan of spicy food and prefer mild food, or you can say you love spicy food. After you answer, play the model answers «No, no soy fan de la comida picante. Prefiero la comida suave.» and «Sí, me encanta, pero no puedo vivir sin la pasta.» to compare.

    2

Reply comprehension: Choose the correct response

You will hear a question in Spanish. Choose the best reply from two options. Both options are lines from the recordings, but only one fits the question naturally.

Your task: Listen to «¿Te gusta la comida picante?» ('Do you like spicy food?'). Then choose the best reply: A) «No, no soy fan de la comida picante. Prefiero la comida suave.» ('No, I'm not a fan of spicy food. I prefer mild food.') or B) «Sí, me encanta, pero no puedo vivir sin la pasta.» ('Yes, I love it, but I can't live without pasta.'). Say your choice out loud, then play the recording of your chosen reply to check if it sounds like a natural answer.

    3

Recall and role-play: Play both speakers

You will now try to remember and say the lines from a short conversation. The conversation has two speakers: one asks questions, the other answers. You will play both roles.

Your task: First, listen to the whole conversation: «¿Te gusta la comida picante?», «No, no soy fan de la comida picante. Prefiero la comida suave.», «Entiendo. ¿Y te gusta comer fuera?», «Sí, me encanta, pero no puedo vivir sin la pasta.». Then, without looking at the text, try to say the conversation out loud, playing both roles. Start with the question about spicy food, then give the answer, then ask about eating out, then give the final answer. If you get stuck, replay the recording for that line.

    Common questions

What is the difference between 'me encanta' and 'me gusta'?

'Me encanta' is stronger than 'me gusta'. It means you love something, while 'me gusta' means you like it. In the recordings, «Me encanta la comida picante.» uses 'me encanta' to show a strong love for spicy food. You can use 'me encanta' for things you really enjoy.

How do I say I don't like something in Spanish?

You can say 'No soy fan de...' as in «No soy fan de la comida picante.», which means 'I'm not a fan of...'. This is a casual way to express dislike. You can also say 'No me gusta...' but the recording uses 'No soy fan' to show a softer, more conversational tone.
