Spanish Speaking Practice: Supporting a Friend in a Hard Moment

Beginner speaking practice to offer support, ask what a friend needs, and respond to a request using recorded Spanish lines.

Free lesson path Phrase audioNo sign-up needed

In this workshop you practice short, caring Spanish phrases for supporting a friend who is going through a hard time. You will hear and repeat recorded lines, choose suitable replies, and then recall the exchange with the roles switched. The goal is to speak clearly and kindly, not to memorize grammar rules.

    Offering support with simple phrases

Start by listening to and repeating three short support phrases. «Estoy aquí para ti.» means that you are present for the other person. «¿Qué puedo hacer?» asks what you can do to help. «Cuenta conmigo.» tells the person that they can rely on you. Say each line slowly, then say it again in a warm, calm voice. These phrases are useful when you want to show care without asking for details. After repeating, cover the screen and try to say each phrase from memory. If you forget one, listen again and repeat it once more.

Listening and choosing a helpful reply

Now listen to a short exchange. «Oye, supe que estás pasando por un momento difícil. Estoy aquí para ti.» means the speaker heard that the friend is having a hard time and says they are there for them. «Gracias. La verdad es que me siento muy solo.» means the friend thanks the speaker and says they feel very alone. «¿Quieres que te escuche? ¿O prefieres que te ayude con algo?» asks whether the friend wants the speaker to listen or prefers help with something. «¿Puedes acompañarme a la cita médica mañana?» asks the speaker to come along to a medical appointment tomorrow. Notice that the friend first shares a feeling, then later makes a clear request. When you practice, keep that order: listen, respond, and only then ask or answer about practical help.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided support exchange

You are speaking with a friend who is going through a hard time. Use the recorded lines to offer support and ask what they need.

Your task: Read the first line aloud: «Oye, supe que estás pasando por un momento difícil. Estoy aquí para ti.». Then pause and read the friend's reply: «Gracias. La verdad es que me siento muy solo.». Next, ask your question: «¿Quieres que te escuche? ¿O prefieres que te ayude con algo?». Finally, read the friend's request: «¿Puedes acompañarme a la cita médica mañana?». Repeat the whole exchange once more, keeping a calm and gentle tone.

    2

    Choose the suitable reply

You hear a friend say they feel very alone. You want to respond with care and then ask what they need.

Your task: Choose the best line to say first: «Estoy aquí para ti.», «¿Qué puedo hacer?», or «¿Puedes acompañarme a la cita médica mañana?». Then choose the best follow-up question: «¿Quieres que te escuche? ¿O prefieres que te ayude con algo?» or «Cuenta conmigo.». Say your two chosen lines aloud in that order.

    3

    Recall with roles switched

Now you play the friend who is going through a hard time. Another person, or the audio, plays the supportive speaker.

Your task: Listen to «Oye, supe que estás pasando por un momento difícil. Estoy aquí para ti.» and reply with «Gracias. La verdad es que me siento muy solo.». Then listen to «¿Quieres que te escuche? ¿O prefieres que te ayude con algo?» and reply with «¿Puedes acompañarme a la cita médica mañana?». After that, switch back: you say «Oye, supe que estás pasando por un momento difícil. Estoy aquí para ti.», then «Gracias. La verdad es que me siento muy solo.», then «¿Quieres que te escuche? ¿O prefieres que te ayude con algo?», then «¿Puedes acompañarme a la cita médica mañana?» in the same order.

    Common questions

Can I practice these lines alone without a partner?

Yes. You can play the audio for one role and speak the other role aloud. Then replay the audio and switch roles. There is no automatic assessment, so use the success criteria to check your own order and tone.

What should I say first when a friend shares a hard feeling?

Begin with a support line such as «Estoy aquí para ti.» or «Cuenta conmigo.». Then you can ask a gentle question like «¿Quieres que te escuche? ¿O prefieres que te ayude con algo?» to find out whether your friend wants you to listen or wants help with something practical.
