In this workshop you will practice asking for specific food and drinks in Spanish and understanding short replies. You will hear and use polite requests, then follow a simple cafe exchange between a customer and a server. The goal is to speak clearly, use the right request for the right item, and respond correctly when someone asks if you want anything else.

Asking for a drink or food

Start with a direct request. The line «Quiero un café.» means I want a coffee. It names one drink and is a simple way to say what you want. If you want to be more polite, use «Quisiera un vaso de agua, por favor.», which means I would like a glass of water, please. The word please makes the request softer. For a different drink, «¿Me trae una cerveza?» means Can you bring me a beer? This is a question, so your voice should rise slightly at the end. For food, «¿Me puede dar una manzana?» means Can you give me an apple? This polite question pattern works for food and drinks, so you can use it whenever you want to ask for an item politely. Practice each line slowly, then at a natural speed.

    Understanding the server's reply

When you order, the server may ask a follow-up question. The line «Claro, ¿algo más?» means Sure, anything else? This checks whether you want more items. If you do want something else, you can answer with «Sí, también quiero una manzana.», which means Yes, I also want an apple. This adds one more item to your order. The server may then close the exchange with «Muy bien, aquí tiene.», which means Very well, here you go. This signals that your order is ready or being handed to you. In a cafe scene, the customer asks first, the server replies, the customer adds another item, and the server finishes. Keep that order when you practice.

    Putting the exchange together

A full short exchange can begin with «Buenos días, ¿me puede dar un café con leche?», which means Good morning, can you give me a coffee with milk? This is a polite request that includes a greeting. The server can answer with «Claro, ¿algo más?», asking if you want anything else. You can then add «Sí, también quiero una manzana.», saying you also want an apple. The server can finish with «Muy bien, aquí tiene.», handing over the order. Notice that the customer speaks first, then the server, then the customer again, then the server again. When you swap roles, the order of the lines stays the same. Only who reads each part changes. This helps you practice both speaking and listening in a realistic cafe situation.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Quiero un café.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Buenos días, ¿me puede dar un café con leche?

Good morning, can you give me a coffee with milk?
    B

    Claro, ¿algo más?

    Sure, anything else?
    A

    Sí, también quiero una manzana.

Yes, I also want an apple.
    B

    Muy bien, aquí tiene.

    Very well, here you go.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided cafe exchange

You are a customer in a cafe in the morning. The server is ready to take your order. You will read the customer lines and listen to the server lines.

Your task: Read «Buenos días, ¿me puede dar un café con leche?» aloud as the customer. Then listen to or read «Claro, ¿algo más?» as the server. Reply with «Sí, también quiero una manzana.» as the customer. Finally, listen to or read «Muy bien, aquí tiene.» as the server. Repeat the exchange once more, trying to speak smoothly.

    2

    Choose the right reply

You are the customer. The server has just asked you a question. You need to choose the best reply from the options.

Your task: The server says «Claro, ¿algo más?». Which reply fits? Option A: «Sí, también quiero una manzana.». Option B: «Quiero un café.». Option C: «Quisiera un vaso de agua, por favor.». Say your choice aloud, then say the full reply.

    3

    Recall and role swap

You will recall the cafe exchange without looking at the lines. Then you will swap roles and do it again.

Your task: First, as the customer, say the greeting and request from memory. Then, as the server, say the follow-up question. Then, as the customer, add the apple. Finally, as the server, close the exchange. After that, swap roles: server first? No, keep the same order. The customer still speaks first, then the server, then the customer, then the server.

    Common questions

Do I need to use the exact words from the recordings?

Yes, for this practice use the recorded lines as your model. They give you correct, natural Spanish for ordering. Once you are comfortable, you can change only the food or drink item if you have learned its name, but keep the same request pattern.

What if I am practicing alone without a partner?

You can play both roles yourself. Read the customer lines aloud, then read the server lines aloud. You can also use the audio for one role and speak the other role yourself. There is no automatic assessment, so check your own speaking against the recorded lines.
