In this workshop you will practice asking for a different side dish in Spanish. You will hear and repeat polite requests, understand a server's reply, and take both roles in a short restaurant exchange. The focus is on clear, polite substitution requests and on following the order of a conversation: request, reply, follow-up, and answer.

    Asking for a substitution

A substitution request means you want one item in place of another. In Spanish, you can use a direct question or a polite statement. The recorded line «¿Me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?» means 'Can you bring me a salad instead of fries?' It is a direct question. The recorded line «Quisiera una ensalada en lugar de papas fritas, por favor.» means 'I would like a salad instead of fries, please.' It is a polite statement. The recorded line «¿Puedo cambiar las papas fritas por una ensalada?» means 'Can I change the fries for a salad?' It uses the verb for changing one thing for another. All three are useful when you want a salad instead of fries. Practice saying each line slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep your tone polite and calm.

    Understanding the server's reply

When you make a request, the server may reply and then ask a follow-up question. The recorded line «Buenas tardes, ¿qué le gustaría ordenar?» means 'Good afternoon, what would you like to order?' It is the server's opening question. The recorded line «Claro que sí. ¿Algo para tomar?» means 'Of course. Anything to drink?' It accepts your request and asks about drinks. The recorded line «Solo agua, gracias.» means 'Just water, thank you.' It answers the drink question. In the recorded exchange, the server asks what you want, you make your request, the server replies and asks about drinks, and you answer. Listen for the question word and the polite tone. If you hear the server ask about drinks, you can answer with a simple drink and 'thank you'.

    Putting it together

Now combine the request and the reply. The recorded line «Quisiera el pollo a la plancha, pero ¿me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?» means 'I would like the grilled chicken, but can you bring me a salad instead of fries?' It shows a full order with a substitution. The recorded line «Soy vegetariano/a, ¿puedo pedir ensalada en vez de papas?» means 'I am vegetarian, can I order salad instead of fries?' It gives a reason for the substitution. If you are the server, use «Buenas tardes, ¿qué le gustaría ordenar?» to open, then «Claro que sí. ¿Algo para tomar?» to accept and ask about drinks. If you are the customer, use «Quisiera el pollo a la plancha, pero ¿me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?» or «Soy vegetariano/a, ¿puedo pedir ensalada en vez de papas?» to order, then «Solo agua, gracias.» to answer about drinks. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment. Check your own pronunciation and politeness.

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Buenas tardes, ¿qué le gustaría ordenar?

Good afternoon, what would you like to order?
    B

Quisiera el pollo a la plancha, pero ¿me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?

I would like the grilled chicken, but can you bring me a salad instead of fries?
    A

Claro que sí. ¿Algo para tomar?

    Of course. Anything to drink?
    B

    Solo agua, gracias.

    Just water, thank you.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: order with a substitution

You are the customer. The server has just asked what you would like to order. Use the recorded line «Buenas tardes, ¿qué le gustaría ordenar?» as the server's opening question.

Your task: Say your order using the recorded line «Quisiera el pollo a la plancha, pero ¿me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?». Then listen to the server's reply «Claro que sí. ¿Algo para tomar?» and answer with the recorded line «Solo agua, gracias.».

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the correct response

You are the customer. You have just said the recorded line «Quisiera el pollo a la plancha, pero ¿me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?»: 'I would like the grilled chicken, but can you bring me a salad instead of fries?' The server replies with the recorded line «Claro que sí. ¿Algo para tomar?»: 'Of course. Anything to drink?'

Your task: Choose the best answer: A) Say the recorded line «Solo agua, gracias.»: 'Just water, thank you.' B) Say the recorded line «¿Me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?» again: 'Can you bring me a salad instead of fries?' C) Say the recorded line «Buenas tardes, ¿qué le gustaría ordenar?»: 'Good afternoon, what would you like to order?'

    3

    Recall with correct roles

You will recall the full exchange without reading the lines. The server opens with the recorded line «Buenas tardes, ¿qué le gustaría ordenar?». The customer orders with the recorded line «Quisiera el pollo a la plancha, pero ¿me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?». The server replies with the recorded line «Claro que sí. ¿Algo para tomar?». The customer answers with the recorded line «Solo agua, gracias.».

Your task: First, play the customer. Listen to «Buenas tardes, ¿qué le gustaría ordenar?», then say «Quisiera el pollo a la plancha, pero ¿me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?» from memory. Listen to «Claro que sí. ¿Algo para tomar?», then say «Solo agua, gracias.» from memory. Then swap roles: play the server. Say «Buenas tardes, ¿qué le gustaría ordenar?» from memory, listen to «Quisiera el pollo a la plancha, pero ¿me puede traer una ensalada en vez de papas fritas?», say «Claro que sí. ¿Algo para tomar?» from memory, and listen to «Solo agua, gracias.».

    Common questions

Can I use these lines if I am not ordering fries?

Yes. The structure is the same: say the item you want, then the phrase for 'instead of' and the item you do not want. You can replace 'salad' and 'fries' with other foods you know, but keep the polite request form from the recordings.

What if the server asks a different question?

Listen for the question word. If you hear a question about drinks, answer with a simple drink and 'thank you' as in the recorded line «Solo agua, gracias.». If you do not understand, you can politely ask the server to repeat. The recordings give you a model for a polite reply.
