In this workshop, you will practice offering help in Spanish and responding when someone offers help to you. You will hear short, natural phrases and use them in simple, guided situations. The focus is on choosing between informal and formal forms, understanding a reply, and remembering the correct roles in a short exchange. You do not need to invent new sentences; you will use the exact phrases from the recordings. Listen, repeat, and then try the three tasks. Each task includes a clear answer or self-check so you can confirm your progress.

Informal and Formal Ways to Offer Help

Spanish has two common ways to ask if someone needs help. One is informal and one is formal. The informal form is used with people you know well, like friends or family. The formal form is used with strangers, older people, or in professional situations. Listen to the difference. «¿Necesitas ayuda?» means 'Do you need help?' and is informal. «¿Necesita ayuda?» also means 'Do you need help?' but is formal. You can also offer help directly. «Te ayudo.» means 'I'll help you' and is informal. «Le ayudo.» means 'I'll help you' and is formal. Notice that the formal forms use 'usted' and the informal forms use 'tú'. When you speak, choose the form that matches the person you are talking to. If you are not sure, the formal form is often safer with strangers.

A Short Exchange: Offering and Responding

Now listen to a short conversation. One person offers help with some boxes, and the other person responds. First, «¿Necesitas ayuda con esas cajas?» means 'Do you need help with those boxes?' The speaker uses the informal form, so they are probably talking to someone they know. The other person answers with «Sí, por favor. Gracias.», which means 'Yes, please. Thank you.' This is a polite and common reply. Then the first speaker says «Te ayudo. ¿A dónde las llevas?», which means 'I'll help you. Where are you taking them?' This combines an offer with a question about the destination. Finally, the other person says «Al segundo piso. Muy amable.», which means 'To the second floor. Very kind of you.' This reply gives a location and thanks the helper. Notice that the conversation is friendly and informal. The helper uses 'Te ayudo' and the other person uses 'tú' forms. In a formal situation, you would hear 'Le ayudo' and '¿Necesita ayuda?' instead.

Understanding the Reply and the Roles

When someone offers help, you can accept or decline. In this workshop, we focus on accepting politely. The phrase «Sí, por favor. Gracias.» is a clear acceptance: 'Yes, please. Thank you.' If someone asks where you are taking something, you can answer with a location, like in «Al segundo piso. Muy amable.»: 'To the second floor. Very kind of you.' Pay attention to who is speaking. In the exchange, the first speaker offers help and asks a question. The second speaker accepts and gives a destination. If you hear «¿Necesitas ayuda con esas cajas?», the speaker is offering help. If you hear «Sí, por favor. Gracias.», the speaker is accepting help. If you hear «Te ayudo. ¿A dónde las llevas?», the speaker is still offering help and asking for more information. If you hear «Al segundo piso. Muy amable.», the speaker is answering the question and thanking the helper. Knowing these roles will help you choose the right response in the tasks below.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    ¿Necesitas ayuda con esas cajas?

Do you need help with those boxes?
    B

    Sí, por favor. Gracias.

    Yes, please. Thank you.
    A

Te ayudo. ¿A dónde las llevas?

I'll help you. Where are you taking them?
    B

    Al segundo piso. Muy amable.

To the second floor. Very kind of you.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided Exchange: Offer and Accept Help

Imagine you are talking to a friend. You see them carrying heavy bags. You want to offer help in an informal way. Then your friend accepts.

Your task: First, say the informal phrase that means 'Do you need help?' Use the recording «¿Necesitas ayuda?» as your model. Then, say the informal phrase that means 'I'll help you' using «Te ayudo.». Finally, respond as the friend by saying the phrase that means 'Yes, please. Thank you.' using «Sí, por favor. Gracias.». Repeat the exchange twice.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Correct Response

You will read or listen to a short line from the recordings. Your job is to choose the best reply from two options. This checks if you understand the meaning and the role of the speaker.

Your task: Listen to «¿Necesitas ayuda con esas cajas?». It means 'Do you need help with those boxes?' You are the person with the boxes. Choose the correct reply: (A) «Sí, por favor. Gracias.» or (B) «Al segundo piso. Muy amable.». Then listen to «Te ayudo. ¿A dónde las llevas?». It means 'I'll help you. Where are you taking them?' You are the helper who asks where the boxes are going. Choose the correct reply: (A) «Sí, por favor. Gracias.» or (B) «Al segundo piso. Muy amable.». Say your chosen replies out loud.

    3

Recall and Roles: Who Says What?

In this task, you will recall the short exchange from the recordings and identify who says each line. This helps you remember the correct roles when offering and receiving help.

Your task: Think about the conversation with the boxes. The first speaker offers help and asks a question. The second speaker accepts and gives a destination. Now, say the line that the first speaker uses to offer help with the boxes. Then say the line the second speaker uses to accept. Next, say the line the first speaker uses to offer help again and ask where the boxes are going. Finally, say the line the second speaker uses to give the destination and thank the helper. Use the exact phrases from the recordings.

    Common questions

When should I use the informal form and when should I use the formal form?

Use the informal form with people you know well, like friends, family, or classmates. Use the formal form with strangers, older people, or in professional settings. If you are not sure, the formal form is often safer. The recordings show both: «¿Necesitas ayuda?» and «Te ayudo.» are informal, while «¿Necesita ayuda?» and «Le ayudo.» are formal.

How do I respond politely when someone offers me help?

A simple and polite way to accept is to say the phrase from «Sí, por favor. Gracias.», which means 'Yes, please. Thank you.' If you also want to give a location or more information, you can use a reply like «Al segundo piso. Muy amable.», which means 'To the second floor. Very kind of you.' Both are friendly and appropriate in everyday situations.
