In this workshop you will practice a short, friendly introduction in Spanish and learn how to keep a first conversation moving. You will hear how people say their name, where they are from, and what they like. Then you will try three tasks: a guided exchange, a listening choice, and a recall task where you play both roles. The recordings give you clear models, so you can copy the rhythm and the polite tone. You do not need to invent new phrases; use the lines you hear and change only what the notes tell you to change, such as your own name or your own country. Take your time, repeat out loud, and focus on sounding warm and interested.
Starting with your name and origin
A simple introduction often starts with a greeting and your name. In the recordings you hear «Hola, soy Alex.», which means "Hi, I'm Alex." The word soy means "I am," and it is the form used for identity and origin. To say where you are from, add de plus a place. You hear this pattern in «Soy de Canadá.», which means "I'm from Canada," and in «Soy de México.», which means "I'm from Mexico." Notice that the place name changes, but soy de stays the same. When you practice, say your own name after soy, and say your own country or city after soy de. Keep the greeting short and friendly. If you are not sure how to pronounce a place name, say it slowly and clearly; people will understand.
Adding one interest and asking a follow-up
After your name and origin, you can add one thing you like. The phrase me gusta means "I like" when the thing is singular. You hear it in «Me gusta la música.», which means "I like music." You can use me gusta with a hobby or a type of entertainment. To keep the conversation going, ask a simple follow-up question. In «Hola, soy Daniel. Soy de Texas. Me gusta cocinar. ¿Y tú?», the speaker says "And you?" after sharing three pieces of information. That short question invites the other person to speak. In «¡Qué bien! ¿Te gusta el cine latinoamericano?», the speaker asks a more specific question about a type of movie. You can use a short question like "And you?" or a simple yes-or-no question about the other person's interest. The goal is to show you are listening and to give the other person a turn.
Responding and showing interest
When someone introduces themselves, a polite response includes a greeting and a short reaction. In «Mucho gusto, Daniel. Soy Lucía. Soy de Costa Rica. Me gusta el cine.», the speaker says "Nice to meet you" and then gives her own name, origin, and interest. This shows a balanced exchange: you share, then you respond. In «Sí, me gusta mucho. ¿Y a ti?», the speaker answers a yes-or-no question with "Yes, I like it a lot" and then asks "And you?" back. That keeps the conversation going. Notice that the response does not need to be long. A short answer plus a return question is enough. When you practice, listen for the other person's interest and react with a simple phrase like "How nice!" from «¡Qué bien! ¿Te gusta el cine latinoamericano?». Then answer or ask your own follow-up.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided exchange: introduce yourself
You will play the role of a friendly person meeting someone new. Use the recordings as models. You can play both roles with audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so check your own answers with the key below.
Your task: First, listen to «Hola, soy Alex.» and repeat it with your own name. Then listen to «Soy de Canadá.» and «Soy de México.» and say where you are from using soy de plus your country or city. Next, listen to «Me gusta la música.» and say one thing you like using me gusta. Finally, listen to «Hola, soy Daniel. Soy de Texas. Me gusta cocinar. ¿Y tú?» and copy the short follow-up question "And you?" to invite the other person to speak. Say all four parts out loud in order: greeting and name, origin, interest, follow-up question.
Reply comprehension: choose the right response
You will hear a short line and choose the best reply from two options. This checks if you understand the role and the meaning. There is no automatic scoring, so use the answer key below.
Your task: Listen to «Mucho gusto, Daniel. Soy Lucía. Soy de Costa Rica. Me gusta el cine.», where a speaker says "Nice to meet you" and then gives her name, origin, and interest. Which reply fits best? Option A: Say your own name, origin, and interest, then ask a simple question. Option B: Say goodbye and walk away. Choose A or B. Then listen to «Sí, me gusta mucho. ¿Y a ti?», where the speaker says "Yes, I like it a lot" and asks "And you?" Which reply fits best? Option A: Answer with your own opinion and then ask a question back. Option B: Change the topic completely without answering. Choose A or B.
Recall and switch roles
You will now recall the full exchange and play both roles. Use the recordings as your script. There is no automatic assessment, so check your own performance with the key below.
Your task: First, play the role of the first speaker. Use «Hola, soy Daniel. Soy de Texas. Me gusta cocinar. ¿Y tú?» as your model: greet, say your name, say where you are from, say one interest, and ask "And you?" Then switch roles and play the second speaker. Use «Mucho gusto, Daniel. Soy Lucía. Soy de Costa Rica. Me gusta el cine.» as your model: say "Nice to meet you," give your name, origin, and interest. Then switch back and use «¡Qué bien! ¿Te gusta el cine latinoamericano?» to ask a simple follow-up question about the other person's interest. Finally, use «Sí, me gusta mucho. ¿Y a ti?» to answer yes and ask "And you?" back. Say the whole exchange out loud twice, once for each role.
Common questions
Do I need to use exactly the same words as the recordings?
No. The recordings give you the pattern. You should change your name, your country or city, and your interest. For example, keep soy de and change the place, or keep me gusta and change the activity. The important thing is to use the same structure so people understand you.
What if I do not know the Spanish word for my interest?
You can use a word you already know from the recordings, such as music or movies, or you can ask for help. In this practice, focus on using me gusta correctly with a singular noun or a verb. If you need a new word, keep the sentence simple and use a known interest from the recordings.
