In this workshop you will practice introducing someone else in Spanish, not yourself. You will learn to choose between the masculine form and the feminine form, add a simple detail like origin or profession, and understand a short exchange where one person asks who your friend is. Listen to each recorded line, read its English meaning, then try the three speaking tasks. Use the answer keys to check yourself.
Pointing to a male or female friend
When you introduce a male friend, use the masculine pointing word and the masculine noun. The recorded line «Este es mi amigo Sam.» means "This is my friend Sam" and is used for a male friend. When your friend is female, change both words to the feminine forms. The recorded line «Esta es mi amiga Sam.» means "This is my friend Sam" and is used for a female friend. Notice that the name does not change; only the words for "this" and "friend" change. Practice saying each line slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep the stress on the first syllable of the pointing word and on the middle of the word for friend.
Adding one detail: origin or profession
After you introduce your friend, you can add one short detail. To give origin, use the recorded line «Él es de México.», which means "He is from Mexico." To give a profession, use the recorded line «Ella es estudiante.», which means "She is a student." In Spanish, you do not put the word "a" before a profession, so the English "She is a student" matches the recorded line without an extra word. You can combine an introduction with a detail, as in the recorded line «Este es mi amigo Sam. Él es de Canadá.», which means "This is my friend Sam. He is from Canada." The recorded line «Él es estudiante de español.» means "He is a Spanish student" and shows a profession with a subject. Listen for the small word that links the profession to the field of study.
Understanding the question and the reply
In a short exchange, one person asks who your friend is. The recorded line «Hola, ¿quién es tu amigo?» means "Hi, who is your friend?" The reply in the recorded line «Este es mi amigo Sam. Él es de Canadá.» means "This is my friend Sam. He is from Canada." Then the first speaker greets your friend and asks what he does. The recorded line «Mucho gusto, Sam. ¿Y qué haces?» means "Nice to meet you, Sam. And what do you do?" The recorded line «Él es estudiante de español.» means "He is a Spanish student." Notice that the reply uses the masculine subject for "he." If your friend were female, you would use the feminine subject and the feminine profession form. Practice the question and the reply as a short conversation, switching roles.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Guided introduction exchange
Imagine you are introducing a male friend named Sam to a Spanish-speaking neighbor. You will play both roles: first the person introducing, then the neighbor who asks a question.
Your task: Say the introduction line for a male friend. Then add his origin using the recorded line for "He is from Mexico." After that, ask the question "Hi, who is your friend?" as if you were the neighbor. Finally, answer with the full reply that introduces Sam and gives his origin from Canada.
Reply comprehension and choice
Listen to the recorded exchange. One speaker asks who your friend is, and the other speaker introduces Sam and gives his origin. Then the first speaker greets Sam and asks what he does.
Your task: After listening, choose the correct reply for a male friend from Canada. Then choose the correct reply for a female friend who is a student. Say each chosen line aloud. Finally, say the question that means "Hi, who is your friend?" and the question that means "Nice to meet you, Sam. And what do you do?"
Recall with correct roles
Imagine a short scene at a language meetup. You are with a friend, and a new person asks who your friend is. You will recall the lines from memory and use the correct roles.
Your task: First, play the role of the person introducing a male friend. Say the introduction line, then add that he is a Spanish student. Next, play the role of the new person. Ask who the friend is, then say "Nice to meet you, Sam. And what do you do?" Finally, play the role of the person introducing again and give the full reply with the profession.
Common questions
How do I know whether to use the masculine or feminine introduction?
Look at the person you are introducing. If your friend is male, use the masculine pointing word and the masculine noun, as in the recorded line «Este es mi amigo Sam.» If your friend is female, use the feminine pointing word and the feminine noun, as in the recorded line «Esta es mi amiga Sam.» The name stays the same.
Do I need to add the word "a" before a profession in Spanish?
No. In Spanish, you do not put the word "a" before a profession. The recorded line «Ella es estudiante.» means "She is a student" and does not have an extra word before the profession. The same applies when you say «Él es estudiante de español.» Just use the subject and the profession directly.
