In this workshop you will speak about likes and dislikes in Spanish. You will use me gusta for one thing, me gustan for more than one thing, and me encanta for something you love. You will also ask another person what they like and give a reason with porque. Each example comes from a short recording, and you can play both roles when you practice. Listen, repeat, and then try the three speaking tasks.

    Saying What You Like

Start with one thing you like. The recording says «Me gusta el café.», which means I like coffee. Here me gusta works with one singular noun. If you like more than one thing, the verb changes. The recording says «Me gustan los libros.», which means I like books. Notice that gustan is used because books is plural. The verb agrees with the thing that is liked, not with you. To show strong enthusiasm, use encantar. The recording says «Me encanta el chocolate.», which means I love chocolate. This is stronger than me gusta. To say you do not like something at all, Spanish often uses a double negative. The recording says «No me gusta nada el frío.», which means I don't like the cold at all. The word nada adds the idea of not at all.

    Asking and Answering

To ask a friend if they like something, use a short question. The recording says «¿Te gusta el café?», which means Do you like coffee? The answer can add a reason. The recording says «Sí, me encanta. Me gusta porque me despierta por la mañana.», which means Yes, I love it. I like it because it wakes me up in the morning. The word porque means because, and it introduces your reason. You can also ask about a different drink. The recording says «A mí también. ¿Y te gusta el té?», which means Me too. And do you like tea? A negative answer can be soft. The recording says «No, no me gusta mucho. Prefiero el café.», which means No, I don't like it much. I prefer coffee. Here prefiero means I prefer. When you practice, play the question and then answer out loud in your own voice.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Coffee or Tea

Imagine you are talking with a friend about drinks. You will hear a question and then answer it out loud. Use the recordings as your model.

Your task: Play «¿Te gusta el café?» and answer yes or no out loud. Then play «A mí también. ¿Y te gusta el té?» and answer about tea. After each answer, add one short reason with porque if you can. Finally, play «Sí, me encanta. Me gusta porque me despierta por la mañana.» and «No, no me gusta mucho. Prefiero el café.» to compare your answers with the recorded replies.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Right Meaning

This task checks if you understand the recorded replies. You will hear a line and choose what it means in English.

Your task: Play «Sí, me encanta. Me gusta porque me despierta por la mañana.». Does the speaker love coffee, or dislike it? Play «No, no me gusta mucho. Prefiero el café.». Does the speaker prefer coffee, or prefer tea? Say your choices out loud in English, then say the Spanish line again.

    3

    Recall and Role Swap

Now you will remember the lines without looking. This helps you speak more naturally in a real conversation.

Your task: Cover the text and play «Me gusta el café.», «Me encanta el chocolate.», «No me gusta nada el frío.», and «Me gustan los libros.» one by one. After each recording, say the line yourself from memory. Then play «¿Te gusta el café?» and answer as the other person. Finally, play «Sí, me encanta. Me gusta porque me despierta por la mañana.» and ask the question that could come before it.
