In this workshop you will practice polite disagreement in Spanish. You will hear short recorded lines and use them in guided exchanges. The goal is to disagree without sounding harsh. You will also practice offering a different idea and responding when someone disagrees with you. Each recorded line is shown with its English meaning before you use it. The recorded lines on this page are playable, and you can play both roles with the audio. There is no automatic assessment; check your answers with the provided self-checks after each task.

    Useful Lines for Polite Disagreement

Start by learning four short lines. «Entiendo tu punto, pero...» means "I see your point, but..." Use it to show you heard the other person before you disagree. «No estoy seguro de estar de acuerdo.» means "I'm not sure I agree." This is a soft way to say you have a different view. «Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.» means "I respect your opinion, but I see it differently." It adds respect and keeps the tone calm. «¿Me permites una idea diferente?» means "May I offer a different idea?" Use this to ask permission before you suggest another option. These lines are useful in meetings, group projects, or friendly conversations. Practice saying each line slowly, then a little faster. Focus on a calm, even tone. In polite disagreement, your tone matters as much as your words.

A Short Exchange About a Meeting Date

Now look at a short exchange. Speaker A says «Creo que debemos cambiar la fecha de la reunión.», which means "I think we should change the date of the meeting." Speaker B replies «Entiendo tu punto, pero no estoy seguro de estar de acuerdo.», which means "I see your point, but I'm not sure I agree." Speaker A then asks «¿Por qué no? ¿Me permites una idea diferente?», which means "Why not? May I offer a different idea?" Speaker B answers «Claro. Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.», which means "Of course. I respect your opinion, but I see it differently." Notice the roles: A proposes a change, B disagrees politely, A asks why and offers another idea, and B respects the opinion but keeps a different view. This is a model for a calm, respectful exchange. You can play either role with the audio.

    Tone and Turn-Taking Tips

Polite disagreement works best when you keep your voice calm and your sentences short. Pause after the other person finishes. Use «Entiendo tu punto, pero...» or «No estoy seguro de estar de acuerdo.» to soften your reply. If you want to suggest something new, ask «¿Me permites una idea diferente?» first. When someone disagrees with you, you can answer with «Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.» or «Claro. Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.» to show respect and keep the conversation open. Avoid sounding sharp or rushed. In many conversations, a gentle tone and a short pause can make a big difference. Practice these lines until they feel natural, then use them in the tasks below.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Checking available voices…

    Entiendo tu punto, pero...

    I see your point, but...

    ehn-TYEHN-doh too POON-toh, PEH-roh

No estoy seguro de estar de acuerdo.

    I'm not sure I agree.

    noh ehs-TOY seh-GOO-roh deh ehs-TAR deh ah-KWEHR-doh

Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.

I respect your opinion, but I see it differently.

    rehs-PEH-toh too oh-pee-NYOHN, PEH-roh yoh loh VEH-oh dee-feh-REHN-teh

    ¿Me permites una idea diferente?

May I offer a different idea?

    meh pehr-MEE-tehs oo-nah ee-DEH-ah dee-feh-REHN-teh

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Creo que debemos cambiar la fecha de la reunión.

I think we should change the date of the meeting.
    B

Entiendo tu punto, pero no estoy seguro de estar de acuerdo.

I see your point, but I'm not sure I agree.
    A

¿Por qué no? ¿Me permites una idea diferente?

Why not? May I offer a different idea?
    B

Claro. Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.

Of course. I respect your opinion, but I see it differently.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Propose and Disagree

You are in a small meeting. Speaker A wants to change the date of the meeting. You will play Speaker B. Use the recorded lines to disagree politely and then respond when A offers a different idea.

Your task: Listen to «Creo que debemos cambiar la fecha de la reunión.». Then say the line that means "I see your point, but I'm not sure I agree." After that, listen to «¿Por qué no? ¿Me permites una idea diferente?» and say the line that means "Of course. I respect your opinion, but I see it differently."

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Polite Response

You will hear a line and choose the best polite reply from the recorded options. This task checks if you understand the meaning and the role of each line.

Your task: Listen to «Creo que debemos cambiar la fecha de la reunión.». Which recorded line is a polite disagreement? Choose between «No estoy seguro de estar de acuerdo.» and «¿Me permites una idea diferente?». Then listen to «¿Por qué no? ¿Me permites una idea diferente?». Which recorded line shows respect and a different view? Choose between «Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.» and «Entiendo tu punto, pero...».

    3

    Recall and Role Swap

Now practice from memory. You will recall the lines and use them in the correct roles. This task helps you remember the exchange without reading every line.

Your task: Cover the lines. Say the exchange from memory: A proposes changing the meeting date, B disagrees politely, A asks why and offers a different idea, and B respects the opinion but sees it differently. Use the recorded lines «Creo que debemos cambiar la fecha de la reunión.», «Entiendo tu punto, pero no estoy seguro de estar de acuerdo.», «¿Por qué no? ¿Me permites una idea diferente?», and «Claro. Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.» in order.

    Common questions

Do I need to use all the recorded lines in one conversation?

No. You can use the lines that fit the situation. For a short polite disagreement, «Entiendo tu punto, pero...» and «No estoy seguro de estar de acuerdo.» are enough. If you want to suggest another option, add «¿Me permites una idea diferente?». Use «Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.» or «Claro. Respeto tu opinión, pero yo lo veo diferente.» when you want to show respect and keep a different view.

How can I practice if I am alone?

Play the recording and pause after each line. Say your reply out loud, then play the next line. You can play both roles: first as Speaker A, then as Speaker B. Record yourself and listen back to check your tone. A calm, even tone helps polite disagreement sound respectful.
