In this workshop you will practice telling someone you like them, expressing friendly affection, and saying you miss someone. You will hear short recorded lines and then speak them yourself. The goal is to help you choose the right phrase for the right relationship and to respond naturally when someone shares feelings with you. You can play both roles with the audio, and the answer keys below let you check your own speaking.

    Choosing the Right Phrase

Spanish has different ways to express liking and love depending on the relationship. The line «Me gustas.» means I like you in a romantic or strong personal way. The line «Me caes bien.» means I like you as a friend, and it is common with new friends or acquaintances. The line «Te quiero.» means I love you with deep affection, and it is softer than Te amo. The line «Te extraño.» means I miss you and is used with close ones when they are away. Before you speak, decide who you are talking to and what kind of feeling you want to share. Then choose the phrase that matches that relationship.

    Listening to a Real Exchange

In the recorded dialogue, one person shares feelings and the other responds with honesty and kindness. Speaker A says «Oye, quería decirte algo. Me gustas mucho.», which means Hey, I wanted to tell you something. I really like you. Speaker B replies «¿En serio? Me caes bien también, pero necesito tiempo.», which means Really? I like you too as a friend, but I need time. Speaker A answers «Claro, lo entiendo. Solo quería que lo supieras.», which means Of course, I understand. I just wanted you to know. Speaker B closes with «Gracias por decírmelo. Te quiero como amigo.», which means Thanks for telling me. I love you as a friend. Notice how the second speaker uses the friendly phrase and asks for time without rejecting the friendship. This is a useful model for a calm and respectful reply.

    Speaking with Care

When you practice these lines, speak slowly and clearly. Pay attention to the difference between the romantic line «Me gustas.» and the friendly line «Me caes bien.». You can say them to yourself while imagining different people: a close friend, a family member, or someone you like. If you are responding to someone, you can use the friendly phrase from «Me caes bien.» and add that you need time, as in the recorded reply «¿En serio? Me caes bien también, pero necesito tiempo.». Remember that tone matters. A warm and calm voice helps the other person feel respected. Practice each line several times until the sounds feel comfortable.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Share Your Feelings

Imagine you are talking to someone you like. You want to tell them how you feel in a simple and honest way. Use the recorded line that matches a romantic or strong personal liking.

Your task: Say the line «Me gustas.» out loud. Then imagine the other person needs time, and reply with the line «Claro, lo entiendo. Solo quería que lo supieras.» to show you understand. Repeat the exchange twice, playing both roles.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Friendly Response

Someone has just told you they like you. You want to be kind but also honest that you see them as a friend. You also need time to think.

Your task: Listen to or read the recorded line «Oye, quería decirte algo. Me gustas mucho.». Then choose the best reply from these two options: «¿En serio? Me caes bien también, pero necesito tiempo.» or «Gracias por decírmelo. Te quiero como amigo.». Say your chosen reply out loud.

    3

Recall and Role Swap: Missing Someone

Imagine a close friend or family member is away for a while. You want to tell them you miss them. Later, you will play the other role and respond with affection.

Your task: Say the line «Te extraño.» out loud to express that you miss them. Then imagine they reply with «Te quiero.» to show deep affection. Say «Te quiero.» back to them. Finally, swap roles: your partner says «Te extraño.», and you reply with «Te quiero.».
