In this workshop you practise short, polite Spanish sentences about what you eat and why. You will say that you eat halal or kosher, ask whether a food is halal, and explain that the reason is religion rather than a diet. The practice moves from a guided exchange to understanding a reply, and then to recalling the lines with the roles swapped. Each native line is given with its English meaning before you use it.

    Saying what you eat

Start with a simple statement about your food. The line «Como halal.» means "I eat halal." The line «Como kosher.» means "I eat kosher." Both are short and complete, so you can use them on their own when someone offers you food. If you want to add the reason, the line «Por religión, no por dieta.» means "For religion, not as a diet." Use it after a statement or a question to make your reason clear. Keep your voice calm and friendly; these are everyday sentences, not formal speeches.

Asking about food and understanding the answer

When you are not sure about a dish, ask a direct question. The line «¿Esta comida es halal?» means "Is this food halal?" It is a yes-or-no question, so listen for a short answer. In a conversation, someone may offer you food with the line «¿Quieres probar el cerdo?», which means "Do you want to try the pork?" You can refuse politely and explain with the line «No, gracias. No como cerdo. Como halal.», which means "No, thanks. I don't eat pork. I eat halal." The other person may then ask about your reason with the line «¿Es por dieta?», which means "Is it for a diet?" You can answer with the line «No, es por religión. Es comida halal.», which means "No, it's for religion. It's halal food." Notice that the question comes first and the answer comes after it.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    ¿Quieres probar el cerdo?

Do you want to try the pork?
    B

No, gracias. No como cerdo. Como halal.

No, thanks. I don't eat pork. I eat halal.
    A

    ¿Es por dieta?

    Is it for a diet?
    B

No, es por religión. Es comida halal.

No, it's for religion. It's halal food.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange: offer and reply

Two people are sharing a meal. Person A offers pork. Person B refuses and explains. Read both roles aloud, then swap roles and read again.

Your task: Person A says «¿Quieres probar el cerdo?». Person B answers with «No, gracias. No como cerdo. Como halal.». Then Person A asks «¿Es por dieta?». Person B answers with «No, es por religión. Es comida halal.». Read the whole exchange once as A and once as B.

    2

    Choose the right reply

You hear a short line and must choose the reply that fits. The lines are from the recorded exchange.

Your task: Someone says «¿Quieres probar el cerdo?». Choose the best reply: (a) «No, gracias. No como cerdo. Como halal.» or (b) «¿Esta comida es halal?». Then someone says «¿Es por dieta?». Choose the best reply: (a) «No, es por religión. Es comida halal.» or (b) «Como halal.».

    3

    Recall with roles swapped

Cover the lines and rebuild the exchange from memory. Then swap who speaks first in each pair, but keep the same order of offer, refusal, question, answer.

Your task: From memory, say the offer, the refusal, the diet question, and the religion answer. Then swap roles: the person who refused now offers, and the person who offered now refuses. Keep the order: offer, refusal, question, answer.

    Common questions

Can I use these lines if I eat kosher instead of halal?

Yes. The line «Como kosher.» means "I eat kosher." You can use it in the same position as «Como halal.». If someone asks about your reason, you can still use «Por religión, no por dieta.», which means "For religion, not as a diet."

What if someone asks whether my choice is for a diet?

Answer with «No, es por religión. Es comida halal.», which means "No, it's for religion. It's halal food." This reply follows the question «¿Es por dieta?», which means "Is it for a diet?" Keep the answer after the question.
