Practice describing how you study and understanding a classmate’s study habits in Spanish. Listen to the short recorded questions and answers, then rehearse both roles aloud. Each exercise gives model answers and checks so you can compare your speaking with the recording.

Saying What You Do to Study

Start with actions you do when you prepare for a test. The verb hago means I make or I do. You can use it to talk about making study materials. For example, «Hago tarjetas de memoria.» means I make flashcards. Another useful action is repaso, which means I review. You can review your notes before class. The line «Repaso mis apuntes antes de la clase.» means I review my notes before class. Notice that apuntes means notes and antes de means before. When you combine actions, you can say you do two things, as in «Hago tarjetas de memoria y repaso mis apuntes.», which means I make flashcards and review my notes. The word y means and.

    Saying When You Study Best

To say when you study best, use estudio mejor followed by a time expression. The word mejor means better or best in this context. Por la mañana means in the morning, and por la noche means at night. The sentence «Estudio mejor por la mañana.» means I study best in the morning. If you want to ask a classmate about their preference, you can use the question in «¿Estudias mejor por la mañana o por la noche?», which means Do you study better in the morning or at night? The question offers two options. You can also mention your study environment. The line «Me concentro mejor con música tranquila.» means I concentrate better with quiet music. Here me concentro means I concentrate, and tranquila means quiet or calm.

    Giving a Simple Study Tip

The recording changes from a present-tense statement about a habit to a tú command giving a tip. In «Estudio mejor por la mañana. Un consejo: estudia en bloques de veinte minutos.», the speaker says Estudio mejor por la mañana, which means I study best in the morning, and then adds Un consejo: estudia en bloques de veinte minutos, which means A tip: study in twenty-minute blocks. The word consejo means tip or piece of advice. The verb estudia is the tú command form, used when you tell one person to study. You can give this tip after sharing your own habit. For example, you might say when you study best and then offer the tip about twenty-minute blocks.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided Exchange: Share Your Study Actions

Imagine a classmate asks you how you study for an exam. You will answer with two actions you do. Use the question from the recording and respond with a full sentence.

Your task: First, listen to the question «¿Cómo estudias para el examen?», which means How do you study for the exam? Then answer aloud using the actions from «Hago tarjetas de memoria y repaso mis apuntes.», which means I make flashcards and review my notes. Say the full sentence. You can play both roles: ask the question, then answer it.

    2

    Reply Comprehension: Morning or Night?

Listen to the classmate’s recorded answer and identify the preferred time and the suggested study-block length.

Your task: Listen to «Estudio mejor por la mañana. Un consejo: estudia en bloques de veinte minutos.». Does the speaker prefer morning or night? Does the tip suggest twenty-minute or two-hour blocks? Say the two meanings in English, then repeat the full Spanish answer.

    3

Recall with Correct Roles: Ask and Answer

Now you will recall the dialogue without reading. One person asks about study habits, and the other answers with actions and a tip. You can play both roles.

Your task: First, say the question from «¿Cómo estudias para el examen?», which means How do you study for the exam? Then answer with «Hago tarjetas de memoria y repaso mis apuntes.», which means I make flashcards and review my notes. Next, ask the question from «¿Estudias mejor por la mañana o por la noche?», which means Do you study better in the morning or at night? Answer with the full recorded model «Estudio mejor por la mañana. Un consejo: estudia en bloques de veinte minutos.». Try to say each line from memory.

    Common questions

Can I change the time expression in my answer?

Yes. The recording «Estudio mejor por la mañana.» uses por la mañana, which means in the morning. If you study better at night, you can say por la noche instead. Keep the structure estudio mejor and change only the time expression. The question in «¿Estudias mejor por la mañana o por la noche?» offers both options, so either answer is fine. The tip «Un consejo: estudia en bloques de veinte minutos.» stays the same.

Do I need to use all the sentences in one conversation?

No. You can use them in short exchanges. For example, ask the question from «¿Cómo estudias para el examen?» and answer with «Hago tarjetas de memoria y repaso mis apuntes.». Then ask «¿Estudias mejor por la mañana o por la noche?» and answer with «Estudio mejor por la mañana. Un consejo: estudia en bloques de veinte minutos.». You can also use «Hago tarjetas de memoria.» or «Repaso mis apuntes antes de la clase.» alone to talk about one study action. Practice each line separately before combining them.
