In this workshop you will practice giving a balanced review of a restaurant meal in Spanish. You will learn to combine a positive point with a mild criticism, summarize your overall impression, and respond to questions about food, service, and prices. The native examples are models for your own speaking. By the end, you should be able to describe what you liked and what you would change, and to take part in a short exchange about a dining experience.

    Building a Balanced Review

A balanced review often starts with something positive and then adds a gentle negative. In «La comida estuvo deliciosa, pero el servicio fue un poco lento.», the speaker says the food was delicious but the service was a bit slow. This pattern lets you praise one part of the meal while noting a problem. Another useful structure contrasts a strong positive with a small drawback. In «El sabor era excelente, aunque la porción era pequeña.», the flavor was excellent although the portion was small. The word 'aunque' means 'although' and introduces the contrasting point. You can also show enthusiasm for one item while mentioning a minor issue, as in «Me encantó el postre, aunque el café estaba un poco frío.», where the speaker loved the dessert but found the coffee a bit cold. These phrases give you flexible tools for describing a meal honestly and politely.

    Summarizing Your Overall Impression

When you want to give a general summary, you can use a phrase like 'en general', which means 'in general' or 'overall'. In «En general, la experiencia fue buena, pero esperaba algo más.», the speaker says that overall the experience was good but expected something more. This is a polite way to say that something was missing without being harsh. You can combine this summary with specific details. For example, you might say that overall it was a good experience, and then mention that the food was delicious although the service was a bit slow, as in «En general, fue una buena experiencia. La comida estuvo deliciosa, aunque el servicio fue un poco lento.». This approach helps your listener understand both your general feeling and the reasons behind it.

    Talking About Prices and Portions

Prices and portions are common topics in a restaurant review. In «Los precios me parecieron razonables, pero las porciones eran pequeñas. Aun así, volvería.», the speaker says the prices seemed reasonable but the portions were small, and even so, would go back. The phrase 'aun así' means 'even so' and shows that a drawback did not ruin the experience. You can use this structure to say that something was acceptable but had a downside, and then state whether you would return. This is a natural way to end a review on a balanced note.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

¿Cómo estuvo tu cena en el nuevo restaurante?

How was your dinner at the new restaurant?
    B

En general, fue una buena experiencia. La comida estuvo deliciosa, aunque el servicio fue un poco lento.

Overall, it was a good experience. The food was delicious, although the service was a bit slow.
    A

    ¿Y qué tal los precios?

    And how about the prices?
    B

Los precios me parecieron razonables, pero las porciones eran pequeñas. Aun así, volvería.

The prices seemed reasonable to me, but the portions were small. Even so, I would go back.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided Exchange: Ask and Answer About a Dinner

Imagine a friend asks you about a dinner at a new restaurant. You will play both roles. First, say the question «¿Cómo estuvo tu cena en el nuevo restaurante?» aloud and answer using the model in «En general, fue una buena experiencia. La comida estuvo deliciosa, aunque el servicio fue un poco lento.». Then switch roles and ask the question yourself.

Your task: Say the dinner question «¿Cómo estuvo tu cena en el nuevo restaurante?». Then answer with «En general, fue una buena experiencia. La comida estuvo deliciosa, aunque el servicio fue un poco lento.». Switch the voice you play and repeat those same two lines. Notice that the answer gives a positive comment about the food and a mild negative about the service.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Best Response

You will hear a question about prices and then a reply. Say «¿Y qué tal los precios?» aloud, then say «Los precios me parecieron razonables, pero las porciones eran pequeñas. Aun así, volvería.» aloud. Then decide which part of the reply is positive and which is negative.

Your task: Say «¿Y qué tal los precios?» aloud. Then say «Los precios me parecieron razonables, pero las porciones eran pequeñas. Aun así, volvería.» aloud. After saying it, say aloud what the speaker thought about the prices and what they thought about the portions. Then say whether the speaker would go back. Finally, repeat «Los precios me parecieron razonables, pero las porciones eran pequeñas. Aun así, volvería.» aloud, focusing on the contrast between the reasonable prices and the small portions.

    3

    Recall a balanced recorded review

Now you will give a full review without looking at the recordings. Imagine you ate at a restaurant. You will use the phrases you practiced to describe the food, service, and prices.

Your task: Cover the text. Recall the sample review «La comida estuvo deliciosa, pero el servicio fue un poco lento.», then the dessert-and-coffee sentence «Me encantó el postre, aunque el café estaba un poco frío.». Say the price question «¿Y qué tal los precios?» as the friend, and the recorded answer «Los precios me parecieron razonables, pero las porciones eran pequeñas. Aun así, volvería.» as the diner. Your goal is to recall these exact models; adding different details is optional after completing the exercise.

    Common questions

How can I make my review sound natural and not too negative?

Start with a positive point, then add a mild negative using 'pero' or 'aunque'. For example, you can say the food was delicious but the service was a bit slow, as in «La comida estuvo deliciosa, pero el servicio fue un poco lento.». This keeps your review balanced and polite.

What if I want to say I would go back even though something was not perfect?

You can use the phrase 'aun así' which means 'even so'. In «Los precios me parecieron razonables, pero las porciones eran pequeñas. Aun así, volvería.», the speaker says the prices were reasonable but the portions were small, and even so, would go back. This shows that a small drawback did not ruin the experience.
