Store Your Luggage in Spanish: Ask, Understand, and Pick Up

Practice asking to store luggage at a hotel or hostel, understanding pickup questions, and saying when you will return for your bags.

Free lesson path Phrase audioNo sign-up needed

In this workshop you will practice a real front-desk conversation about leaving your luggage. You will learn how to ask if you can store your bags before check-in or after check-out, how to ask about the pickup time, and how to understand the staff member's questions and instructions. Each native example comes from the supplied recordings, and you will see the English meaning before you practice. You can play both roles with the audio, and you can use the answer keys and self-checks to confirm your own performance.

    Asking to store your luggage

Start with the most direct question. «¿Puedo guardar mis maletas aquí?» means "Can I store my suitcases here?" Use it at a hotel or hostel front desk when you want to leave your bags. If you arrived early and your room is not ready, you can be more specific. «¿Puedo dejar mi equipaje aquí antes del check-in?» means "Can I leave my luggage here before check-in?" The word equipaje is a general word for luggage, and antes del check-in tells the staff member that you have not checked in yet. If you have already checked out but your flight or bus leaves later, use a different time phrase. «¿Puedo dejar las maletas después del check-out?» means "Can I leave the bags after check-out?" Notice that the structure stays similar: Puedo dejar... plus the time phrase. Practice saying each question slowly, then at a natural speed.

    Understanding the staff reply

When you ask to leave your bags, the staff member may ask you a question in return. In the recorded dialogue, the traveler says «Buenos días. Llegué temprano. ¿Puedo dejar mi equipaje aquí antes del check-in?», which means "Good morning. I arrived early. Can I leave my luggage here before check-in?" The staff member answers with «Sí, claro. Puede dejarlo en la recepción. ¿Hasta qué hora lo va a recoger?», which means "Yes, of course. You can leave it at the front desk. Until what time will you pick it up?" The key part is the question at the end: Hasta qué hora lo va a recoger? This asks until what time you will pick it up. You do not need to invent a new answer. You can use a simple time phrase, as in the next recorded line.

Saying when you will return and getting a receipt

After the staff member asks about the pickup time, you can give a simple answer. In the dialogue, the traveler says «Vengo por mis maletas a las seis de la tarde. ¿Está bien?», which means "I'll come for my bags at six in the evening. Is that okay?" The structure Vengo por mis maletas a las... plus a time is useful for saying when you will return. The staff member then confirms and gives an instruction. «Perfecto. Aquí le doy un comprobante. Guarde este papel.» means "Perfect. Here I'll give you a receipt. Keep this paper." The word comprobante means receipt or proof, and the instruction Guarde este papel means "Keep this paper." If you want to ask about the deadline before you leave your bags, you can use «¿Hasta qué hora puedo recoger mis maletas?», which means "Until what time can I pick up my bags?" This is a polite way to check the pickup time in advance.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided front-desk exchange

Imagine you arrive at a hotel early in the morning. Your room is not ready yet. You want to leave your luggage at the front desk and return later.

Your task: Play the traveler. Say the line that means "Good morning. I arrived early. Can I leave my luggage here before check-in?" Then play the staff member and say the line that means "Yes, of course. You can leave it at the front desk. Until what time will you pick it up?" Finally, play the traveler again and say the line that means "I'll come for my bags at six in the evening. Is that okay?" Use the recordings to check your pronunciation.

    2

    Choose the right reply

You are at a hostel front desk. You have already checked out, but your bus leaves later. You want to leave your bags after check-out.

Your task: Choose the best question for this situation: the line that means "Can I leave the bags after check-out?" or the line that means "Can I leave my luggage here before check-in?" Say your chosen line out loud. Then imagine the staff member asks the pickup question from the recording. Answer with the recorded pickup line that means "I'll come for my bags at six."

    3

Recall the conversation with correct roles

You will now recall the recorded dialogue from memory. The traveler arrives early, asks to leave luggage, the staff member agrees and asks about the pickup time, the traveler gives a time, and the staff member gives a receipt and an instruction.

Your task: Without looking at the recordings, say the traveler's first question. Then say the staff member's reply and pickup question. Then say the traveler's pickup time. Finally, say the staff member's receipt line and instruction. After you finish, listen to the recordings and compare.

    Common questions

What is the difference between maletas and equipaje?

Both refer to luggage. Maletas is the everyday word for suitcases, and equipaje is a more general word for luggage. In the recordings, you hear both. Use maletas when you want to be specific about suitcases, and equipaje when you want a general word. Both are understood at hotels and hostels.

How do I ask about the pickup time before I leave my bags?

Use the recorded question «¿Hasta qué hora puedo recoger mis maletas?», which means "Until what time can I pick up my bags?" It uses recoger, which means to pick up or collect. Ask this before you leave your bags so you know the deadline. The staff member may also ask you the same question when you leave your luggage, as in the recorded dialogue.
