In this workshop you will practice a practical survival skill: asking where the restroom is and understanding a short answer. You will hear polite ways to start the question, then work with a short exchange between a visitor and a staff member. The goal is not to memorize a long script. The goal is to say one clear question, listen for a location word, and check your understanding. You can do all tasks alone by playing both roles out loud. Speak slowly at first, then repeat each line until it feels comfortable. If a line feels long, keep the polite opening and the key question together, because that pair is what helps a stranger understand you quickly.

    Start with a polite question

A direct question works, but a polite opening helps when you approach a staff member or a stranger. The recording «¿Dónde está el baño?» means "Where is the restroom?" It is the most common and broadly useful question in Latin American Spanish. The recording «¿Dónde están los baños?» means "Where are the restrooms?" Use the plural if you expect more than one restroom or are asking about a public restroom area. To make the question more polite, add the opening in «Disculpe, ¿dónde está el baño?», which means "Excuse me, where is the restroom?" A slightly more formal option is «¿Me puede decir dónde está el baño?», which means "Can you tell me where the restroom is?" Choose one question and practice it until you can say it without reading. Then add the polite opening and say the full line again.

    Understand a short direction answer

When you ask, the answer is often short. In the exchange, the visitor asks the polite question in «Disculpe, ¿dónde está el baño?», which means "Excuse me, where is the restroom?" The staff member answers with «Está al fondo, a la derecha.», which means "It's at the back, on the right." Here, "al fondo" tells you the restroom is at the back of the place, and "a la derecha" tells you it is on the right side. This is a location, not an instruction to turn right. The visitor then checks the location with «¿Está antes o después de la tienda?», which means "Is it before or after the shop?" The staff member confirms with «Después de la tienda, junto a la escalera.», which means "After the shop, next to the stairs." Listen for the key location words: back, right, before, after, next to. You do not need to understand every word to find the place.

    Practice both roles out loud

You can practice alone by playing both roles. First, play the visitor and say the polite question from «Disculpe, ¿dónde está el baño?». Then play the staff member and answer with «Está al fondo, a la derecha.». After that, play the visitor again and ask the checking question from «¿Está antes o después de la tienda?». Finally, play the staff member and give the answer from «Después de la tienda, junto a la escalera.». Keep your voice calm and clear. Pause after each line. If you are in a real place, you can use the simple question from «¿Dónde está el baño?» or the plural from «¿Dónde están los baños?». If you want to be more polite, use «Disculpe, ¿dónde está el baño?» or «¿Me puede decir dónde está el baño?». Remember that the answer may come quickly, so listen for the location words first and ask the speaker to repeat if needed.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided polite question exchange

Imagine you are in a museum and you need to find the restroom. A staff member is standing nearby. You will play both roles out loud.

Your task: First, play the visitor and say the polite question from «Disculpe, ¿dónde está el baño?». Then play the staff member and answer with «Está al fondo, a la derecha.». Repeat the exchange two more times. On the last round, try to say both lines without looking at the text.

    2

Listen and choose the correct location

Imagine you asked for the restroom and heard a short answer. You will check whether the restroom is before or after the shop.

Your task: Play the visitor and say the checking question from «¿Está antes o después de la tienda?». Then play the staff member and say the answer from «Después de la tienda, junto a la escalera.». After you say the answer, decide: is the restroom before the shop or after the shop? Say your choice out loud, then say the full answer from «Después de la tienda, junto a la escalera.» again.

    3

Recall the exchange with correct roles

Imagine the same museum scene, but now you will recall the whole short exchange from memory. You will play both the visitor and the staff member.

Your task: Say the visitor's polite question from «Disculpe, ¿dónde está el baño?». Then say the staff member's first answer from «Está al fondo, a la derecha.». Then say the visitor's checking question from «¿Está antes o después de la tienda?». Finally, say the staff member's second answer from «Después de la tienda, junto a la escalera.». Do this once while looking at the lines, then once without looking.

    Common questions

Should I use the singular or plural question?

Both are correct. Use the singular question from «¿Dónde está el baño?» when you are asking about one restroom. Use the plural question from «¿Dónde están los baños?» if you expect more than one restroom or are asking about a public restroom area. If you are not sure, the singular question is a safe choice in most places.

What should I listen for in the answer?

Listen for short location words. In the answer from «Está al fondo, a la derecha.», the key words tell you the restroom is at the back and on the right. In the answer from «Después de la tienda, junto a la escalera.», the key words tell you it is after the shop and next to the stairs. You do not need to understand every word. Focus on the location words and the general direction.
