Ask for a Post Office in Spanish: Speaking Practice

Practice asking where the post office is, understanding simple directions and hours, and using short Spanish exchanges out loud.

In this workshop you will speak Spanish out loud in small, realistic situations. You will ask where the post office is, listen to a short answer about distance and direction, and ask about closing time. Each native line is shown with its English meaning before you practice it, so you always know what you are saying. You can play both roles when you use the audio, but there is no automatic check, so use the answer keys and self-checks to judge your own speaking.

Asking where the post office is

Start with a polite opener and a location question. The line «¿Dónde está el correo?» means "Where is the post office?" and uses está because you are asking about a location. A very common alternative in many countries is «¿Dónde queda el correo?», which also means "Where is the post office?" but uses queda for the location of a building or place. If you are not sure there is one nearby, use «¿Hay una oficina de correos cerca?», which means "Is there a post office nearby?" Say each line slowly, then a little faster. Listen to each recorded question and imitate its rhythm; Spanish questions do not all require a final rise. When you practice, imagine you are standing on a street corner and speaking to a passerby. Begin with a greeting or a polite word, then ask your question. Do not rush; clear vowels matter more than speed.

    Understanding directions and hours

Now listen to a short exchange. One person asks «Disculpe, ¿dónde está el correo?», which means "Excuse me, where is the post office?" The answer is «Está a dos cuadras, a la derecha.», meaning "It's two blocks away, on the right." Notice that a la derecha describes a location on the right side, not an instruction to turn right. To ask about closing time, use «Gracias. ¿A qué hora cierran?», which means "Thank you. What time do they close?" The reply is «Cierran a las seis de la tarde.», meaning "They close at six in the afternoon." To ask about opening time, use «¿A qué hora abren?», which means "What time do they open?" Practice the answer lines too, because understanding them is part of speaking. When you hear a direction, repeat it silently, then say it back. This helps you remember the place and the side of the street. The six o’clock closing time is a detail of this example, not a claim about a real post office.

    Checking your speaking

After you practice the exchange, check your own speaking. Record yourself on your phone. Listen for three things: the location word está or queda, the direction phrase a la derecha, and the time phrase a las seis de la tarde. If a word is unclear, say the whole line again slowly. You can also switch roles: read the answer lines «Está a dos cuadras, a la derecha.» and «Cierran a las seis de la tarde.» out loud, then ask the questions again. This builds both speaking and listening confidence. Keep your questions polite and your answers clear.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange: ask and answer

You are on a street and want to find the post office. You will play both roles: first the person asking, then the person answering. Use the native lines as your model.

Your task: Say the question «Disculpe, ¿dónde está el correo?» out loud. Then answer with «Está a dos cuadras, a la derecha.». Next, ask «Gracias. ¿A qué hora cierran?» and answer with «Cierran a las seis de la tarde.». Repeat the whole exchange two times, changing your voice for each role.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the correct meaning

You will hear or read a native reply and choose what it means. This checks whether you understand directions and hours, not just ask questions.

Your task: Read «Está a dos cuadras, a la derecha.» and choose: (a) It is two blocks away, on the right. (b) Turn right in two blocks. Then read «Cierran a las seis de la tarde.» and choose: (a) They open at six in the afternoon. (b) They close at six in the afternoon.

    3

    Recall with correct roles

You will rebuild the short exchange from memory, keeping the roles correct. One person asks; the other gives information.

Your task: Without looking, say the question that means "Excuse me, where is the post office?" Then give the answer that means "It's two blocks away, on the right." Next, ask the question that means "Thank you. What time do they close?" Then give the answer that means "They close at six in the afternoon."

    Common questions

What is the difference between está and queda in these questions?

Both ask about location. «¿Dónde está el correo?» uses está and means "Where is the post office?" «¿Dónde queda el correo?» uses queda and also means "Where is the post office?" Queda is very common for the location of a building or place. Choose one form and practice it until it feels natural.

How do I ask about opening and closing times?

Use «¿A qué hora abren?» for "What time do they open?" and «Gracias. ¿A qué hora cierran?» for "What time do they close?" The answer «Cierran a las seis de la tarde.» means "They close at six in the afternoon." Listen for the time phrase and repeat it back to confirm you understood.
