Ask for a Library in Spanish: Guided Speaking Practice

Practice asking where a library is, understanding a distance reply, and asking about Wi-Fi using recorded Spanish lines.

In this workshop you practice a short, realistic exchange in Spanish: getting someone's attention, asking where the public library is, understanding a reply about distance, and asking whether the library has Wi-Fi. You will hear and repeat recorded lines, choose the reply that fits, and then recall the exchange with the roles swapped. The recordings give you the exact Spanish you need, so you can focus on speaking clearly and responding at the right moment.

Getting attention and asking the location

Start by getting someone's attention politely, then ask your question. The recorded line «Disculpe, ¿hay una biblioteca cerca?» means "Excuse me, is there a library nearby?" — a polite way to check whether a library exists close to you. If you want to ask specifically about the public library, use the recorded line «¿Dónde está la biblioteca pública?», which means "Where is the public library?" You can also combine the polite opening with the location question, as in the recorded line «Disculpe, ¿dónde está la biblioteca pública?», which means "Excuse me, where is the public library?" Say the opening softly and clearly, then say the question with a rising intonation at the end. Practice each line slowly first, then at a natural speed.

    Understanding the reply about distance

When you ask where something is, the answer often tells you how far away it is. The recorded line «Está a dos cuadras.» means "It is two blocks away." The recorded line «Está a dos cuadras, al lado del parque.» means "It is two blocks away, next to the park." Listen for the distance and any landmark. In «Está a dos cuadras, al lado del parque.», the landmark is the park, which helps you confirm you are going the right way. Repeat both lines after the recording, then say them from memory while picturing the two blocks and the park. If you hear a distance you did not expect, ask the person to repeat by saying the question again slowly.

Asking about Wi-Fi and understanding the answer

After you know where the library is, you may want to ask about services inside. The recorded line «¿La biblioteca tiene wifi?» means "Does the library have Wi-Fi?" You can also thank the person first and then ask, as in the recorded line «Gracias. ¿La biblioteca tiene wifi?», which means "Thank you. Does the library have Wi-Fi?" The recorded reply «Sí, hay wifi gratis. Hay que pedir la contraseña.» means "Yes, there is free Wi-Fi. You need to ask for the password." Listen for the yes, the word for free, and the instruction about the password. Repeat «Sí, hay wifi gratis. Hay que pedir la contraseña.» in two parts: first the confirmation, then the extra information. This helps you keep the same subject — Wi-Fi — through the whole exchange.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange: ask and answer

You are standing near a park and want to find the public library. Your partner plays a helpful local person. Use the recorded lines as your model.

Your task: Read the first line aloud: «Disculpe, ¿dónde está la biblioteca pública?». Your partner replies with «Está a dos cuadras, al lado del parque.». Then read «Gracias. ¿La biblioteca tiene wifi?» aloud. Your partner replies with «Sí, hay wifi gratis. Hay que pedir la contraseña.». After you finish, swap roles: your partner reads «Disculpe, ¿dónde está la biblioteca pública?» and «Gracias. ¿La biblioteca tiene wifi?», and you read «Está a dos cuadras, al lado del parque.» and «Sí, hay wifi gratis. Hay que pedir la contraseña.». Keep the same order: question, reply, follow-up question, reply.

    2

    Choose the reply that fits

You hear a question and must choose the recorded reply that answers it. The questions and replies come from the recordings.

Your task: Question 1: someone says «Disculpe, ¿dónde está la biblioteca pública?». Which reply fits: «Está a dos cuadras.» or «Sí, hay wifi gratis. Hay que pedir la contraseña.»? Question 2: someone says «Gracias. ¿La biblioteca tiene wifi?». Which reply fits: «Está a dos cuadras, al lado del parque.» or «Sí, hay wifi gratis. Hay que pedir la contraseña.»? Say your chosen reply aloud, then check the answer key below.

    3

Recall the exchange with roles swapped

You now play the local person who gives directions and information. Your partner plays the visitor who asks the questions.

Your task: Your partner says «Disculpe, ¿dónde está la biblioteca pública?». You reply with «Está a dos cuadras, al lado del parque.». Your partner says «Gracias. ¿La biblioteca tiene wifi?». You reply with «Sí, hay wifi gratis. Hay que pedir la contraseña.». Do this once with the lines visible, then once from memory. Finally, swap back and repeat the whole exchange in the original roles.

    Common questions

Can I practice alone if I do not have a speaking partner?

Yes. Play each recording and repeat it aloud, then play the next line and respond as the other person. You can also record both roles yourself, but there is no automatic assessment, so listen back and compare your lines with the recordings.

What should I listen for in the reply about the library?

Listen for the distance and any landmark, as in the recorded reply that mentions two blocks and a park. For the Wi-Fi question, listen for the confirmation, the word for free, and the instruction to ask for the password.
