In this workshop you will practice a simple, useful conversation: asking whether you can walk to a place, how many minutes it takes, and whether it is too far. You will hear short recorded lines and use them to build your own questions and answers. The focus is on speaking clearly and understanding the reply. You do not need to invent new phrases; you will use the recorded lines as your model. By the end, you should feel ready to ask about walking distance in a shop, hotel, or street.

    Asking if you can walk

Start with a direct question. The line «¿Puedo ir caminando?» means "Can I walk there?" Use it when you want to know if you can go on foot. A softer, more general option is «¿Se puede ir caminando?», which means "Can one walk there?" or "Is it walkable?" This is useful with a stranger or a staff member. After you ask, you can check distance with «¿Está lejos?», which means "Is it far?" If the answer is no, walking is often possible. To ask about time, use «¿Cuánto se tarda caminando?», which means "How long does it take on foot?" These four lines give you a complete set for asking about walking.

    Understanding the answer

When you ask, listen for a clear yes or no and a time. In the recorded exchange, one speaker asks «Disculpe, ¿puedo ir caminando al mercado?», which means "Excuse me, can I walk to the market?" The reply «Sí, está a unos diez minutos caminando.» means "Yes, it is about a ten-minute walk." That tells you the place is close enough to walk. Later, the same speaker asks about another place with «¿Y al museo? ¿También se puede ir caminando?», which means "And to the museum? Can one walk there too?" The reply «No, el museo está muy lejos. Mejor toma un taxi.» means "No, the museum is very far. You had better take a taxi." Notice the difference: one answer gives a short walking time, the other says it is very far and suggests a taxi. Your job is to catch those key words.

Using the lines in your own speech

You can play both roles. First, say the question lines out loud: «¿Puedo ir caminando?», «¿Se puede ir caminando?», «¿Está lejos?», and «¿Cuánto se tarda caminando?». Then listen to the recorded exchange and repeat the answers: «Sí, está a unos diez minutos caminando.» and «No, el museo está muy lejos. Mejor toma un taxi.». Pay attention to the rhythm. In «Sí, está a unos diez minutos caminando.», the time comes after "está a..." and before "caminando." In «No, el museo está muy lejos. Mejor toma un taxi.», the word "muy" makes the distance stronger. Practice switching between asking about a market and asking about a museum. You do not need to add new places; use the recorded examples as your guide. The goal is to speak clearly and to understand whether the answer means "walk" or "take a taxi."

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask about the market

Imagine you are talking to a hotel clerk. You want to know if you can walk to the market. Use the recorded lines to ask and then respond as the clerk.

Your task: First, say the question from «Disculpe, ¿puedo ir caminando al mercado?» out loud. Then, play the role of the clerk and give the answer from «Sí, está a unos diez minutos caminando.». Repeat the exchange two times. Then switch: ask «¿Puedo ir caminando?» and answer with «Sí, está a unos diez minutos caminando.».

    2

    Reply comprehension: walk or taxi?

You will hear two answers about different places. One answer means you can walk, and the other means you should take a taxi. Listen carefully to the recorded lines.

Your task: Listen to «Sí, está a unos diez minutos caminando.» and «No, el museo está muy lejos. Mejor toma un taxi.». After each one, say "caminando" if the place is walkable, or "taxi" if it is too far. Then say the full answer out loud. Do this three times.

    3

Recall and role-play: ask and answer

Now you will recall the lines without looking. Imagine you are a visitor asking about two places: the market and the museum. A friend will answer.

Your task: Ask about the market using «Disculpe, ¿puedo ir caminando al mercado?». Then answer as the friend with «Sí, está a unos diez minutos caminando.». Next, ask about the museum using «¿Y al museo? ¿También se puede ir caminando?». Then answer with «No, el museo está muy lejos. Mejor toma un taxi.». Do the whole exchange once as the visitor and once as the friend.

    Common questions

What is the difference between «¿Puedo ir caminando?» and «¿Se puede ir caminando?»?

«¿Puedo ir caminando?» means "Can I walk there?" and is direct. «¿Se puede ir caminando?» means "Can one walk there?" or "Is it walkable?" and is more general, impersonal, and slightly softer. Use «¿Puedo ir caminando?» when you are talking about yourself, and «¿Se puede ir caminando?» when you want a general answer from a stranger or staff member.

How do I know if the answer means I can walk or if I need a taxi?

Listen for a time and the word for far. In «Sí, está a unos diez minutos caminando.», the answer gives a short walking time, so you can walk. In «No, el museo está muy lejos. Mejor toma un taxi.», the answer says the place is very far and suggests a taxi, so you should not walk. If you hear a short time, walking is usually fine. If you hear "muy lejos," it is better to take a taxi.
