In this workshop you will practice asking about internet speed and reliability in Spanish, and you will learn to understand short answers. You will use simple questions with 'internet', 'conexión', and 'Wi-Fi', and you will hear a short exchange between a customer and a staff member. The goal is to help you check whether a connection is fast enough and reliable enough for your needs, such as a video call. You can play both roles with the audio, and you can use the answer keys and self-checks to check yourself.

    Asking About Speed

To ask if the internet is fast, you can use a simple yes-or-no question. The word 'internet' is often masculine in Latin America, so you say 'el internet'. The adjective 'rápido' means fast, and it changes to 'rápida' when you talk about a feminine noun like 'la conexión'. A slightly more formal option is to ask about 'la conexión'. In cafés and hotels, people often ask about 'el Wi-Fi'. The word 'bueno' means good, and in this context it often implies fast enough. Listen to these questions and repeat them: «¿El internet es rápido?», «¿La conexión es rápida?», and «¿El Wi-Fi es bueno?». Notice that the adjective comes after the noun or after 'es'.

    Asking About Reliability

Speed is not the only thing that matters. You may also want to know if the connection is reliable. The adjective 'confiable' means reliable. You can ask «¿Es confiable el internet?». This question uses 'el internet' after the adjective, but you can also ask about 'la conexión' by changing the words to match. When someone answers, listen for words like 'rápido' (fast), 'se corta' (it cuts out), and 'casi siempre' (almost always). These words help you understand if the connection is good for a video call or other important tasks.

    A Short Exchange

Now listen to a short conversation. A customer asks a staff member about the Wi-Fi. First, the customer says «Disculpe, ¿el Wi-Fi es bueno aquí?». The staff member answers «Sí, es rápido, pero a veces se corta.». Then the customer asks a follow-up question: «¿Es confiable para una videollamada?». The staff member replies «Casi siempre. Pero mejor pregunta en la recepción.». Notice how the customer uses 'bueno' first, then asks about reliability with 'confiable'. The staff member gives a mixed answer: it is fast, but sometimes it cuts out, and it is almost always reliable, but suggests asking at the front desk. This shows that answers can be positive but with a small warning.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Disculpe, ¿el Wi-Fi es bueno aquí?

Excuse me, is the Wi-Fi good here?
    B

Sí, es rápido, pero a veces se corta.

Yes, it's fast, but sometimes it cuts out.
    A

    ¿Es confiable para una videollamada?

Is it reliable for a video call?
    B

Casi siempre. Pero mejor pregunta en la recepción.

Almost always. But you'd better ask at the front desk.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Ask About Wi-Fi

Imagine you are in a hotel lounge and you want to know if the Wi-Fi is good. You will play the customer. Use the recording to ask your question.

Your task: Listen to «Disculpe, ¿el Wi-Fi es bueno aquí?» and repeat it aloud. Then imagine a staff member answers with «Sí, es rápido, pero a veces se corta.». Listen to that answer and repeat it. Finally, ask a follow-up question using «¿Es confiable para una videollamada?».

    2

    Reply comprehension: identify the caution

Both replies can give information about reliability. Identify their specific content rather than treating only one as a valid answer.

Your task: Listen to «Sí, es rápido, pero a veces se corta.» and «Casi siempre. Pero mejor pregunta en la recepción.». Which reply explicitly says that the connection cuts out sometimes? Which sends the listener to reception for more information? Does either guarantee an uninterrupted call?

    3

Recall and Role-Play: Customer and Staff

Now practice without looking at the text. You will play both the customer and the staff member. Use the recordings to check yourself after each line.

Your task: First, as the customer, ask if the Wi-Fi is good using «Disculpe, ¿el Wi-Fi es bueno aquí?». Then, as the staff member, answer with «Sí, es rápido, pero a veces se corta.». Next, as the customer, ask if it is reliable for a video call using «¿Es confiable para una videollamada?». Finally, as the staff member, answer with «Casi siempre. Pero mejor pregunta en la recepción.».

    Common questions

What is the difference between 'rápido' and 'confiable'?

'Rápido' means fast and refers to speed. 'Confiable' means reliable and refers to whether the connection works consistently without cutting out. You can ask about both to get a full picture.

Can I use these questions for both internet and Wi-Fi?

Yes. You can ask about 'el internet', 'la conexión', or 'el Wi-Fi'. Just remember to match the adjective: 'el internet es rápido', 'la conexión es rápida', 'el Wi-Fi es bueno'. The recordings include examples with 'el internet' and 'el Wi-Fi'.
