Practice asking for student and senior discounts in Spanish, stating your age or student status, and understanding follow-up questions.

Free lesson path Phrase audioNo sign-up needed

In this workshop, you will practice asking whether a student or senior discount is available, saying that you are a student or giving your age, and understanding simple follow-up questions. You will use short, polite questions that work in shops, museums, and other places with entrance fees. The practice is built around recorded lines, so you can hear the exact wording and repeat it. You will play both the customer and the staff member in guided exchanges, then check your understanding with a short reply choice and a recall task. No automatic scoring is provided; use the answer keys to check yourself.

    Asking if a discount exists

Start with a simple yes-or-no question. To ask about a student discount, use the recorded line «¿Hay descuento para estudiantes?». This means "Is there a student discount?" The word "descuento" means discount, and "estudiantes" means students. To ask about a senior discount, use «¿Hay descuento para personas mayores?». This means "Is there a senior discount?" The phrase "personas mayores" is a respectful way to say older adults. You can use these questions at a ticket counter, a museum entrance, or a shop. Keep your tone polite and friendly. After you ask, listen for "sí" or "no" and for any follow-up question about your status or age.

Saying you are a student or giving your age

If the staff member asks if you are a student, you can answer with «Soy estudiante.». This means "I am a student." It is a short, clear statement. You may be asked to show a student ID, so have it ready. If you are asking about a senior discount, you may need to state your age. Use «Tengo 65 años.» to say "I am 65 years old." Replace the number with your actual age if needed. The structure "Tengo" plus a number plus "años" means "I have ... years," which is how Spanish speakers state age. These two lines let you respond to common follow-up questions without needing to build a new sentence.

    Understanding a full exchange

Now listen to a longer exchange. A customer asks about a student discount with «Buenos días, ¿hay descuento para estudiantes?». The staff member replies with «Sí, hay un descuento del 50% para estudiantes. ¿Tienes tu identificación de estudiante?». This means "Yes, there is a 50% discount for students. Do you have your student ID?" Notice the question at the end: "¿Tienes tu identificación de estudiante?" The customer then says "Yes, here it is" and asks about a senior discount with «Sí, aquí está. ¿Y hay descuento para personas mayores?». The staff member answers with «Sí, para mayores de 60 años. ¿Cuántos años tiene su acompañante?». This means "Yes, for those over 60. How old is your companion?" The phrase "mayores de 60 años" means "older than 60 years." The question "¿Cuántos años tiene su acompañante?" asks about the age of the person with you. This exchange shows how a simple discount question can lead to a follow-up about age or ID.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Buenos días, ¿hay descuento para estudiantes?

Good morning, is there a student discount?
    B

Sí, hay un descuento del 50% para estudiantes. ¿Tienes tu identificación de estudiante?

    B

Sí, para mayores de 60 años. ¿Cuántos años tiene su acompañante?

Yes, for those over 60. How old is your companion?
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask for a student discount

Imagine you are at a museum ticket counter. You want to ask if there is a student discount. The staff member will answer and ask for your student ID.

Your task: Play the customer. Say the recorded line «¿Hay descuento para estudiantes?» to ask your question. Then listen to the staff member's reply «Sí, hay un descuento del 50% para estudiantes. ¿Tienes tu identificación de estudiante?». Answer the ID question with the recorded line «Sí, aquí está.» and then state «Soy estudiante.» If you are practicing alone, say all four lines aloud in that order.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the correct response

You hear a staff member ask about the age of your companion. Then switch roles and let the companion state their own age using a recorded line.

Your task: Read the staff member's question: «¿Cuántos años tiene su acompañante?» from «Sí, para mayores de 60 años. ¿Cuántos años tiene su acompañante?». It asks for the companion's age. Now play the companion, who is 65, and choose the recorded line that states an age: «Soy estudiante.» or «Tengo 65 años.». Say «Tengo 65 años.» aloud as the companion's line.

    3

Recall and role swap: customer and staff

Now you will recall the full exchange and practice both roles. Imagine the customer has a companion who is 65, so the staff member's final question has a clear referent.

Your task: First, play the customer. Say «Buenos días, ¿hay descuento para estudiantes?» to ask about a student discount. Then play the staff member and say «Sí, hay un descuento del 50% para estudiantes. ¿Tienes tu identificación de estudiante?». Next, play the customer again and say «Sí, aquí está. ¿Y hay descuento para personas mayores?» to ask about a senior discount. Finally, play the staff member and say «Sí, para mayores de 60 años. ¿Cuántos años tiene su acompañante?». Then switch to the companion and answer with the recorded age line «Tengo 65 años.». Try to do this without looking at the lines.

    Common questions

Do I need to use the exact recorded lines, or can I change the numbers?

The recorded lines are your models. For «Tengo 65 años.», you can replace the number with your actual age, because the structure "Tengo ... años" is regular. For other lines, keep the wording as recorded so you practice the exact question or statement. If you change too much, you may lose the polite, clear pattern that the recordings teach.

What if the staff member asks a question I do not understand?

For this workshop, focus on the recorded follow-up questions: «Sí, hay un descuento del 50% para estudiantes. ¿Tienes tu identificación de estudiante?» asks about a student ID, and «Sí, para mayores de 60 años. ¿Cuántos años tiene su acompañante?» asks about your companion's age. The recorded replies are «Sí, aquí está.» for the ID request and «Tengo 65 años.» when the person whose age is requested answers.
