In this workshop you practise a short, realistic rental conversation in Spanish. You will ask how much the deposit is, check what it is for, and find out whether it is refundable. The native examples come from the recordings, so you can listen and repeat the exact lines. You can play both roles: the person asking and the person answering. There is no automatic scoring, so use the answer keys in the exercises to check yourself honestly. Speak out loud, keep a steady rhythm, and repeat each line until it feels comfortable.
Asking the basic deposit question
Start with the simplest question. The recording «¿Cuánto es el depósito?» means "How much is the deposit?" Use it when you want only the amount. The recording «¿De cuánto es el depósito?» also asks the amount, but with a more conversational tone; it is very common in Mexico and Central America. The recording «¿Cuánto piden de depósito?» means "How much do they ask for as a deposit?" and is useful when a rental agency, not the owner, handles the contract. Notice that all three are questions, so your voice should rise slightly at the end. Practise them slowly first, then at normal speed. In a real conversation, you can begin with a greeting and then ask. The recording «Buenas tardes, vi el anuncio del departamento. ¿De cuánto es el depósito?» shows this: it means "Good afternoon, I saw the apartment listing. How much is the deposit?" Use it as a model for opening politely before your question.
Understanding the answer about the amount
When you ask about the amount, you need to understand the reply. The recording «El depósito es de un mes de renta, o sea, ocho mil pesos.» means "The deposit is one month's rent, that is, eight thousand pesos." The speaker gives the rule first and then the exact amount. Listen for the phrase o sea, which introduces the explanation, similar to "that is" in English. You do not need to repeat the number in your own practice unless you want to check comprehension. A good follow-up is to confirm that you understood. The recording «Entiendo. ¿El depósito es reembolsable? ¿Cuándo me lo devuelven?» begins with "I understand" and then asks a new question. This shows a useful pattern: acknowledge the answer, then continue. Practise saying the acknowledgement clearly before you move to the next question.
Asking about refunds and timing
After the amount, ask about the refund. The recording «¿El depósito es reembolsable?» means "Is the deposit refundable?" This is a yes-or-no question, so keep your intonation simple. The recording «Entiendo. ¿El depósito es reembolsable? ¿Cuándo me lo devuelven?» combines two ideas: it means "I understand. Is the deposit refundable? When do you return it to me?" The second question asks about timing. The recording «Sí, es reembolsable. Lo devolvemos quince días después de que entregas las llaves, si no hay daños.» answers both: it means "Yes, it's refundable. We return it fifteen days after you hand in the keys, if there is no damage." Listen for the condition at the end. When you practise, say the question first, then play the answer and check whether you caught the time and the condition. You can also reverse roles and say the answer yourself.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

The deposit is one month's rent, that is, eight thousand pesos.Entiendo. ¿El depósito es reembolsable? ¿Cuándo me lo devuelven?

Yes, it's refundable. We return it fifteen days after you hand in the keys, if there is no damage.Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided exchange: ask and answer
You are a visitor asking about an apartment. Play the recording «Buenas tardes, vi el anuncio del departamento. ¿De cuánto es el depósito?» as your opening line, then ask the basic amount question from «¿Cuánto es el depósito?». After that, play the answer «El depósito es de un mes de renta, o sea, ocho mil pesos.» and respond with the acknowledgement and refund question from «Entiendo. ¿El depósito es reembolsable? ¿Cuándo me lo devuelven?».
Your task: Speak your lines out loud in order: first the opening from «Buenas tardes, vi el anuncio del departamento. ¿De cuánto es el depósito?», then the question from «¿Cuánto es el depósito?», then the reply from «Entiendo. ¿El depósito es reembolsable? ¿Cuándo me lo devuelven?». Pause the audio when needed. Repeat the whole exchange twice.
Reply comprehension: choose the correct meaning
Listen to the recording «Sí, es reembolsable. Lo devolvemos quince días después de que entregas las llaves, si no hay daños.» without looking at any text. It is the answer about the refund. Then read the two choices below and pick the one that matches what you heard.
Your task: Choice A: The deposit is not refundable. Choice B: The deposit is refundable and is returned fifteen days after the keys are handed in, if there is no damage. Say your choice out loud, then play «Sí, es reembolsable. Lo devolvemos quince días después de que entregas las llaves, si no hay daños.» again to check.
Recall with correct roles
Cover the text. You will hear a short conversation. One person asks about the deposit and the other answers. Your job is to say who asks and who answers, and then repeat one line from each role.
Your task: Play «Buenas tardes, vi el anuncio del departamento. ¿De cuánto es el depósito?» and «El depósito es de un mes de renta, o sea, ocho mil pesos.» together. Say out loud which recording is the question and which is the answer. Then repeat the question from «Buenas tardes, vi el anuncio del departamento. ¿De cuánto es el depósito?» and the answer from «El depósito es de un mes de renta, o sea, ocho mil pesos.» in the correct roles.
Common questions
Do I need to memorise every line before I speak?
No. Start by listening and repeating short parts. Use the recordings as your model, and speak along with them. It is fine to pause and replay. The goal is to become comfortable asking the deposit question and understanding the answer, not to perform perfectly from memory on the first try.
How do I know if my answer is correct?
There is no automatic scoring in this workshop. Use the answer keys in each exercise to check yourself. For the comprehension task, the correct choice is B for «Sí, es reembolsable. Lo devolvemos quince días después de que entregas las llaves, si no hay daños.» and yes for «El depósito es de un mes de renta, o sea, ocho mil pesos.». For the role task, «Buenas tardes, vi el anuncio del departamento. ¿De cuánto es el depósito?» and «Entiendo. ¿El depósito es reembolsable? ¿Cuándo me lo devuelven?» are the questions, while «El depósito es de un mes de renta, o sea, ocho mil pesos.» and «Sí, es reembolsable. Lo devolvemos quince días después de que entregas las llaves, si no hay daños.» are the answers. Compare your spoken lines with the recordings.
