In this workshop you practice apologizing sincerely in Spanish and offering to make amends. You will hear short recorded lines and a two-person dialogue, then repeat, choose replies, and recall the lines with the correct roles. Before each task, read the English meaning of every recorded line so you know exactly what you are saying. Speak out loud, slowly at first, then at a natural speed. You can play both roles in the dialogue. There is no automatic scoring, so use the answer keys in each follow-up to check yourself honestly.

The apology lines and what they mean

Start with four short apology lines. «Lo siento mucho, fue mi culpa.» means 'I'm really sorry, it was my fault' — you admit the mistake clearly and say it was your fault. «Te pido disculpas por lo que pasó.» means 'I apologize for what happened' — a respectful apology for what happened, useful with strangers or in professional settings. «Perdóname, no debí hacer eso.» means 'Forgive me, I shouldn't have done that' — it asks someone personally to forgive you and says you should not have done that; it is warmer and more emotional than lo siento. «¿Cómo puedo compensarlo?» means 'How can I make it up to you?' — a question that offers to make amends, not just say sorry. Read each English meaning, then say the Spanish line out loud. Repeat each line three times: first slowly, then at a natural speed. Focus on clear vowels and steady stress.

    A dialogue about arriving late

Now listen to a short dialogue. Speaker A says «Oye, llegaste muy tarde y no me avisaste.», which means 'Hey, you arrived very late and you didn't let me know.' Speaker B answers with «Lo siento mucho, fue mi culpa. No debí hacerte esperar.», a sincere apology that also says 'I shouldn't have made you wait.' Speaker A replies with «Gracias por decirlo. ¿Y cómo puedes compensarlo?», thanking B for saying it and asking how B can make it up. Speaker B answers with «Te pido disculpas otra vez. ¿Te parece si te invito a cenar mañana?», apologizing again and suggesting dinner tomorrow. Notice how the apology grows: first admit fault, then ask how to make amends, then offer something concrete. Practice each line separately, then read the whole dialogue out loud, switching roles.

    How to sound sincere

Sincerity in Spanish comes from a calm, steady voice and clear eye contact if you are face to face. Do not rush the apology. Pause slightly after the first phrase, then continue. Keep your tone low and warm rather than loud. When you ask «¿Cómo puedo compensarlo?», say it as a real question, not a throwaway line. When you say «Perdóname, no debí hacer eso.», take your time so the words land. If you are practicing alone, record yourself and listen back. Check that every word is clear and that you are not mumbling. Repeat until the lines feel natural, not memorized.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Checking available voices…

    I apologize for what happened.

Forgive me, I shouldn't have done that.

    ¿Cómo puedo compensarlo?

How can I make it up to you?

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Oye, llegaste muy tarde y no me avisaste.

Hey, you arrived very late and you didn't let me know.
    B

Lo siento mucho, fue mi culpa. No debí hacerte esperar.

I'm really sorry, it was my fault. I shouldn't have made you wait.
    A

Gracias por decirlo. ¿Y cómo puedes compensarlo?

Thanks for saying that. And how can you make it up to me?
    B

Te pido disculpas otra vez. ¿Te parece si te invito a cenar mañana?

I apologize again. How about I take you to dinner tomorrow?

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided apology exchange

You are practicing with a partner or alone. Imagine you arrived late to meet a friend. Your partner says the line from «Oye, llegaste muy tarde y no me avisaste.»: you arrived very late and did not let me know.

Your task: Respond with the line from «Lo siento mucho, fue mi culpa. No debí hacerte esperar.»: apologize sincerely, admit it was your fault, and say you should not have made them wait. Say it out loud twice. Then switch roles: you say «Oye, llegaste muy tarde y no me avisaste.» and your partner answers with «Lo siento mucho, fue mi culpa. No debí hacerte esperar.».

    2

    Choose the right reply

Read the situation and choose the best recorded line. Situation one: a coworker you do not know well tells you that you forgot to send an important message. Situation two: a close friend is upset because you canceled plans at the last minute.

Your task: For situation one, choose between «Te pido disculpas por lo que pasó.» and «Perdóname, no debí hacer eso.». For situation two, choose between «Lo siento mucho, fue mi culpa.» and «Perdóname, no debí hacer eso.». Say your chosen line out loud, then say the other option out loud and notice how the register changes.

    3

Recall the dialogue with correct roles

Cover the recorded lines. You will rebuild the short dialogue from memory, keeping the correct roles: Speaker A is the person who was kept waiting, and Speaker B is the person who arrived late.

Your task: Say Speaker A's first line from memory. Then say Speaker B's reply. Then say Speaker A's follow-up question. Finally say Speaker B's last line. Do this once with the lines covered, then check your answers below.

    Common questions

When should I use lo siento mucho instead of te pido disculpas?

Use «Lo siento mucho, fue mi culpa.» when you clearly caused a problem and want to admit it directly. Use «Te pido disculpas por lo que pasó.» when you want to sound respectful and responsible, especially with strangers or in professional settings. Both are sincere; the difference is mainly tone and situation.

How do I offer to make amends after apologizing?

After your apology, ask «¿Cómo puedo compensarlo?». This shows you want to make amends, not just say sorry. In the dialogue, Speaker B also offers something concrete with «Te pido disculpas otra vez. ¿Te parece si te invito a cenar mañana?», suggesting dinner tomorrow. You can follow the same shape as the dialogue: apologize, then ask how to make it up, then offer a specific action.
