In this workshop you will practice a short shopping exchange: asking the price of an item, asking about another item, and understanding the price answer. You will hear recorded Korean lines and use them in guided speaking tasks. The goal is to help you speak clearly and respond correctly when you hear a price.

    Asking the price

When you want to know the cost of an item, you can use a simple question. The recorded line «이거 얼마예요?» means 'How much is this?' Use it when you are pointing to one item. If you want to ask about a different item, you can use «이거는요?», which means 'And this one?' or 'What about this?' These two questions are useful in a shop or market. Practice saying them slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep your voice calm and clear so the other person can understand which item you mean.

    Understanding the answer

After you ask, the other person may give a price. The recorded line «만 원이에요.» means 'It is 10,000 won.' Another possible answer is «삼천 원이에요.», which means 'It is 3,000 won.' Listen for the number and the word for won. In many shops, the answer comes right after your question. If you are not sure, you can ask again about the same item or about a different item. The important skill is to catch the number clearly. Practice repeating the price back silently in your head as you hear it.

    A full exchange

Now put the questions and answers together. In the recorded exchange, one speaker asks «이거 얼마예요?», which means 'How much is this?' The other speaker answers «오천 원이에요.», which means 'It is 5,000 won.' Then the first speaker asks about another item with «이거는요?», which means 'And this one?' The other speaker answers «그거는 만 원이에요.», which means 'That one is 10,000 won.' Notice the order: question, answer, new question, new answer. When you practice, keep this order. You can play both roles, but do not change the order of the lines.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided price exchange

You are in a small shop. You see one item and want to know its price. The shopkeeper is ready to answer.

Your task: Say the question from «이거 얼마예요?» to ask the price. Then wait and listen. After you hear the answer, say the question from «이거는요?» to ask about another item.

    2

Choose the price answer that matches the exchange

You hear someone ask the price of an item. You need to choose the answer that matches the recorded exchange from two recorded price lines.

Your task: Listen to the question «이거 얼마예요?». Then choose the answer that matches the recorded exchange: is it «오천 원이에요.» or «삼천 원이에요.»? Say the matching answer out loud.

    3

Recall the full exchange with roles

You will practice the full recorded exchange. One role asks the questions, and the other role gives the answers.

Your task: First, play the asker. Say «이거 얼마예요?», then wait. After the answer, say «이거는요?». Then switch roles: play the answerer. Respond to «이거 얼마예요?» with «오천 원이에요.», and respond to «이거는요?» with «그거는 만 원이에요.».

    Common questions

Can I practice alone if I do not have a speaking partner?

Yes. You can play both roles by saying the asker lines and then the answerer lines. Use the recordings to check your order. There is no automatic assessment, so listen to yourself and compare with the recorded lines.

What should I focus on when I hear a price answer?

Focus on the number and the word for won. The recorded answers «만 원이에요.», «삼천 원이에요.», «오천 원이에요.», and «그거는 만 원이에요.» all give a price. Try to catch the number first, then repeat the whole line silently to yourself.
