Korean Have and Don't Have: Speaking Practice

Beginner speaking practice for saying what you have and don't have in Korean, with guided role-play and a self-check.

Free lesson path Phrase audioNo sign-up needed

In this workshop you practise talking about what you have and do not have in Korean. You will hear short lines about a bicycle, a car, time, and a restroom, then use them in a guided exchange and a recall task. Each native line is given with its English meaning before you are asked to use it, so you always know what you are saying. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so check your own answers with the keys provided.

    Saying What You Have

The basic pattern for possession lets you state what is yours. Listen to the line «저는 자전거가 있어요.», which means "I have a bicycle." Notice how the thing you have comes before the verb. To talk about another person, use «그녀는 차가 있어요.», which means "She has a car." The same shape works when you change the item or the person. When you want to say you do not have something, use «저는 시간이 없어요.», which means "I don't have time." Practise saying each line slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep the item clear and the ending smooth.

    Asking If Something Is There

Some situations need a question rather than a statement. The line «화장실이 있어요?» means "Is there a restroom?" and can also be understood as "Do you have a restroom?" Use it when you are asking whether something exists or is available. The answer can be a simple yes or no, or it can repeat the item. Listen for the rising intonation that marks a question, and keep your own question short and clear.

    A Short Exchange About Vehicles

Now listen to a short conversation. Speaker A says «저는 자전거가 있어요. 그런데 자전거 열쇠가 없어요.», which means "I have a bicycle. But I don't have the bicycle key." Speaker B replies with «아, 그래요? 저는 자전거가 없어요. 하지만 차가 있어요.», which means "Oh, really? I don't have a bicycle. But I have a car." Speaker A then asks «차가 있어요? 그럼, 주차장이 있어요?», which means "You have a car? Then, is there a parking lot?" Speaker B answers with «네, 주차장이 있어요. 하지만 자전거는 없어요.», which means "Yes, there is a parking lot. But there is no bicycle." Notice how each turn responds to the one before it. The order is A's statement, B's reply, A's follow-up question, and B's answer.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Checking available voices…

    저는 자전거가 있어요.

    I have a bicycle.

    jeoneun jajeongeoga isseoyo.

    그녀는 차가 있어요.

    She has a car.

    geunyeoneun chaga isseoyo.

    저는 시간이 없어요.

    I don't have time.

    jeoneun sigani eopsseoyo.

    화장실이 있어요?

Is there a restroom? / Do you have a restroom?

    hwajangsiri isseoyo?

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

저는 자전거가 있어요. 그런데 자전거 열쇠가 없어요.

I have a bicycle. But I don't have the bicycle key.
    B

아, 그래요? 저는 자전거가 없어요. 하지만 차가 있어요.

    Oh, really? I don't have a bicycle. But I have a car.
    A

    차가 있어요? 그럼, 주차장이 있어요?

You have a car? Then, is there a parking lot?
    B

네, 주차장이 있어요. 하지만 자전거는 없어요.

Yes, there is a parking lot. But there is no bicycle.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Bicycle and Car

You will read both parts of a short exchange. First read Speaker A, then read Speaker B. If you have a partner, one person reads A and the other reads B, then swap roles. The order of the lines does not change when you swap.

Your task: Read Speaker A's line «저는 자전거가 있어요. 그런데 자전거 열쇠가 없어요.», which means "I have a bicycle. But I don't have the bicycle key." Then read Speaker B's reply «아, 그래요? 저는 자전거가 없어요. 하지만 차가 있어요.», which means "Oh, really? I don't have a bicycle. But I have a car." Say each line aloud twice, once slowly and once at a natural speed.

    2

    Reply Comprehension: Parking Lot

Speaker A has just asked about a parking lot. You will read Speaker B's answer and choose what it means. This checks whether you understand the reply, not whether you can produce a new sentence.

Your task: Read Speaker A's question «차가 있어요? 그럼, 주차장이 있어요?», which means "You have a car? Then, is there a parking lot?" Then read Speaker B's answer «네, 주차장이 있어요. 하지만 자전거는 없어요.», which means "Yes, there is a parking lot. But there is no bicycle." Choose the correct meaning of B's answer: (a) There is a parking lot, and there is no bicycle. (b) There is no parking lot, and there is a bicycle. (c) There is a parking lot, and there is a bicycle.

    3

    Recall With Correct Roles

Now recall the exchange from memory. Decide who asks about the parking lot and who answers. Then say the lines in the correct order without looking at the text.

Your task: Say Speaker A's question about the parking lot, then Speaker B's answer. Use the lines you practised: A asks «차가 있어요? 그럼, 주차장이 있어요?», which means "You have a car? Then, is there a parking lot?" and B answers «네, 주차장이 있어요. 하지만 자전거는 없어요.», which means "Yes, there is a parking lot. But there is no bicycle." Keep the question before the answer.

    Common questions

Do I need a partner to practise these lines?

No. You can read both parts yourself and use the audio to check your pronunciation. If you do have a partner, one person reads Speaker A and the other reads Speaker B, then you swap. The order of the lines stays the same: A's statement, B's reply, A's follow-up question, and B's answer.

How do I know if my answer is correct without a teacher?

Each task has a self-check. For the guided exchange, check that you said both lines clearly and can name who has a bicycle and who has a car. For the reply comprehension, the correct choice is (a): there is a parking lot, and there is no bicycle. For the recall task, check that the question came before the answer and that you kept the roles correct.
