In this workshop you will practice saying what you are cooking and answering simple questions about the dish. You will hear short Korean lines, learn what each one means in English, and then use them in guided speaking tasks. The focus is on speaking clearly and responding in the right order, not on perfect grammar.

    Saying what you are making

Start with a simple statement about the dish you are cooking right now. Listen to «저는 김치찌개를 만들고 있어요.» and notice that it names a specific dish. Then listen to «오늘은 불고기를 만들어요.» and notice that it also names a specific dish, but the day is mentioned at the start. Both lines are useful when someone asks what you are doing in the kitchen. Practice saying each line slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep the dish name clear and do not rush the ending.

Describing how the dish tastes and what is in it

After you say what you are making, you can add one detail about taste or ingredients. Listen to «이 음식은 매워요.» and notice that it describes the taste of the dish. Then listen to «야채가 많이 들어 있어요.» and notice that it describes what is inside the dish. These two lines are short, so you can practice them many times. When you speak, keep the same subject as the dish you already named. Do not switch to a different dish in the middle of your answer.

    Answering a question about cooking

Now put the lines together in a short exchange. One person asks a question, and the other answers. Listen to «지금 뭐 만들고 있어요?» and notice that it asks what the other person is making now. Then listen to «저는 김치찌개를 만들고 있어요.» and notice that it answers with a specific dish. After that, listen to «맛이 어때요?» and notice that it asks about taste. Finally, listen to «매워요. 그리고 돼지고기가 많이 들어 있어요.» and notice that it answers with a taste detail and an ingredient detail. In a real conversation, the question comes first, then the answer, then the follow-up question, then the next answer. Keep that order when you practice.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    What are you making now?
    B

    I am making kimchi stew.
    A

    How does it taste?
    B

It is spicy. And it has a lot of pork in it.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask and answer about cooking

You will practice a short exchange with a partner. One person asks what the other is making, and the other answers with a dish. Then the first person asks about taste, and the other answers with a taste detail and an ingredient detail.

Your task: Partner A says «지금 뭐 만들고 있어요?». Partner B answers with «저는 김치찌개를 만들고 있어요.». Partner A then says «맛이 어때요?». Partner B answers with «매워요. After you finish, swap roles and do the same exchange again. Keep the same order: question, answer, follow-up question, answer.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the matching answer

You will hear or read a question and choose the answer that matches it. The answer must be a taught line, not a new sentence.

Your task: Question: «지금 뭐 만들고 있어요?». Which answer matches? Which answer matches? Say your choices out loud, then check the answer key below.

    3

    Recall with correct roles

You will rebuild the exchange from memory. One person is the asker and the other is the cook. The asker starts with a question, and the cook answers.

Your task: Asker: say the question that asks what the other person is making now. Cook: say the answer that names a dish. Asker: say the question that asks about taste. Cook: say the answer that gives a taste detail and an ingredient detail. After you finish, swap roles and repeat. The asker always starts with a question.

    Common questions

Can I practice alone if I do not have a partner?

Yes. You can play both roles by reading the question line and then the answer line yourself. There is no automatic assessment, so use the success criteria to check your own order and content after each round.

What should I focus on first when speaking?

Focus on the order of the exchange and on keeping the same dish from the question to the answer. Say each line slowly, then at a natural speed. Clear order and a consistent dish matter more than perfect pronunciation at this stage.
