Asking about a menu item you cannot read aloud
You are at a small Korean restaurant with a paper menu. One dish name contains a final consonant you have never pronounced before, and you want to order it correctly rather than point silently. A staff member is standing nearby and is not busy.
Your task: Say 이 단어 어떻게 발음해요? while indicating the dish name, then listen to the staff member's pronunciation. Repeat the dish name back once, and follow immediately with 이렇게 발음하는 거 맞아요? Make sure your repetition is audible and your check question is clearly a question.
Checking a name you may have mispronounced
A new Korean acquaintance writes their name for you on a phone screen. You try to read it aloud, but you are not confident about the first syllable. You want to get the name right because you will need to say it again later in the conversation.

Common questions
What if I cannot hear the difference between the pronunciation I was given and my own attempt?
Say the word back anyway and use 이렇게 발음하는 거 맞아요? The other person can confirm or correct you. If you still cannot tell, ask 다시 한 번 들려주세요 and listen for one specific part, such as the last letter, rather than the whole word.
Should I use 이 단어 어떻게 발음해요? or 이거 어떻게 읽어요? when pointing at a menu?
