Practice saying where you intend to go, how long you will stay, and which places you will visit, using recorded model lines.

In this workshop you will practice a short conversation about travel plans. You will say where you intend to go, how long you will stay, and which places you will visit. You will also listen to a reply and choose the correct response. Each model line comes from a recording, and you will read both roles aloud. The goal is to speak clearly and to keep the order of plan, question, reply, and follow-up.

Saying Your Destination and Length of Stay

Start with a destination and a time. The line «来月、日本に行くつもりです。» means that the speaker intends to go to Japan next month. The line «一週間ぐらい滞在します。» means that the speaker will stay for about one week. Notice that the destination comes first, then the length of stay. When you practice, say each line slowly, then say it again at a natural speed. Keep the same subject and activity: if you talk about going, keep talking about going; if you talk about staying, keep talking about staying. This helps your listener follow your plan without confusion.

Adding Places and Comparing the Trip

After you say how long you will stay, you can add the places you will visit. The line «東京と京都に行きます。» means that the speaker will go to Tokyo and Kyoto. The line «週末の予定より大きい旅行です。» means that it is a bigger trip than a weekend plan. Use «東京と京都に行きます。» to list places, and use «週末の予定より大きい旅行です。» to compare the trip with a shorter plan. When you hear a follow-up like «週末の予定より大きい旅行ですね。», it means the other person is checking that the trip is bigger than a weekend plan. Answer with your own plan details, but keep the same subject and activity. Do not switch from travel plans to a different topic.

Listening to a Reply and Keeping Roles Clear

In a conversation, one person states a plan, another asks, and the first answers. The line «いいですね。どのぐらい滞在しますか。» means that the listener says it is nice and asks how long the speaker will stay. The line «一週間ぐらいです。東京と京都に行きます。» means that the speaker answers about one week and says they will go to Tokyo and Kyoto. When you practice with a partner, decide who reads the traveler and who reads the listener. If you swap roles, the order of the conversation stays the same: plan first, then question, then reply, then follow-up. You can read both roles aloud yourself and compare your reading against the recording. There is no automatic assessment, so check your own reading against the recording.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Checking available voices…

    来月、日本に行くつもりです。

I intend to go to Japan next month.

Raigetsu, Nihon ni iku tsumori desu.

    一週間ぐらい滞在します。

I will stay for about one week.

    Isshūkan gurai taizai shimasu.

    東京と京都に行きます。

I will go to Tokyo and Kyoto.

    Tōkyō to Kyōto ni ikimasu.

    週末の予定より大きい旅行です。

It is a bigger trip than a weekend plan.

Shūmatsu no yotei yori ōkii ryokō desu.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    来月、日本に行くつもりです。

I intend to go to Japan next month.
    B

    いいですね。どのぐらい滞在しますか。

That's nice. How long will you stay?
    A

    一週間ぐらいです。東京と京都に行きます。

About one week. I will go to Tokyo and Kyoto.
    B

    週末の予定より大きい旅行ですね。

It's a bigger trip than a weekend plan, isn't it?
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided Exchange: Ask and Answer About a Trip

You and a partner will read a short exchange about travel plans. One person states a plan, and the other asks about the length of stay and reacts.

Your task: Partner A (traveler) reads «来月、日本に行くつもりです。» and «一週間ぐらい滞在します。». Partner B (listener) reads «いいですね。どのぐらい滞在しますか。». Partner A then reads «一週間ぐらいです。東京と京都に行きます。». Partner B reads «週末の予定より大きい旅行ですね。». After that, swap roles and read the same lines again. Keep the order: plan, question, reply, follow-up.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Matching Answer

You will hear or read a question about a travel plan and choose the reply that matches it. The question asks how long the speaker will stay.

Your task: Read the question «いいですね。どのぐらい滞在しますか。». Then choose the best reply from these two options: Option 1 is «一週間ぐらいです。東京と京都に行きます。». Option 2 is «週末の予定より大きい旅行です。». Say your choice aloud, then read the full question and the matching reply together.

    3

Recall With Correct Roles: Rebuild the Conversation

You will rebuild the conversation from memory using the recorded lines. One person is the traveler, and the other is the listener.

Your task: The traveler says «来月、日本に行くつもりです。» and «一週間ぐらい滞在します。». The listener says «いいですね。どのぐらい滞在しますか。». The traveler says «一週間ぐらいです。東京と京都に行きます。». The listener says «週末の予定より大きい旅行ですね。». Read the lines in that order. Then swap roles and read the same order again. Do not change the order of plan, question, reply, and follow-up.

    Common questions

Can I practice alone if I do not have a partner?

Yes. You can read both roles aloud yourself. Read the traveler's plan line, then read the listener's question, then the reply, then the follow-up. There is no automatic assessment, so listen to the recording and check whether your reading matches the model line.

What should I do if I choose the wrong reply in the comprehension task?

Read the question «いいですね。どのぐらい滞在しますか。» again and look for the part that asks how long the speaker will stay. Then read «一週間ぐらいです。東京と京都に行きます。» and notice that it gives a length of stay and places. The matching answer is «一週間ぐらいです。東京と京都に行きます。», not «週末の予定より大きい旅行です。», because «週末の予定より大きい旅行です。» compares the trip with a weekend plan instead of answering the question.
