In this workshop you will practice a short, friendly pet conversation in Japanese. You will learn how to ask if someone has a pet, how to answer that you have a dog, how to give the pet's name, and how to say whether you are a dog person or a cat person. Each native example comes from a recording, and the English meaning is explained before you practice. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic scoring, so use the answer keys and self-checks to confirm your speaking.

    Asking About Pets

Start with the question that opens the conversation. The line «ペットを飼っていますか。» means "Do you have a pet?" It is a polite, general question you can use with a friend or a new acquaintance. The same question also appears in the dialogue as «ペットを飼っていますか。», where speaker A asks it first. Listen for the rising question intonation at the end. When you ask, keep your voice friendly and clear. You do not need to add a name or a title; the question works on its own. Practice saying it slowly, then at a natural speed. After you ask, pause and let the other person answer.

Answering With a Pet and a Name

A simple answer can give both the animal and the name. The line «犬を飼っています。» means "I have a dog." The line «名前はマックスです。» means "His/Her name is Max." In the dialogue, speaker B combines these ideas in «はい、犬を飼っています。名前はマックスです。», which means "Yes, I have a dog. His name is Max." Notice that the answer starts with a short yes, then gives the animal, then gives the name. You can use the same pattern with the recorded words. If you only want to give the animal, use «犬を飼っています。». If you only want to give the name, use «名前はマックスです。». When you speak, link the parts smoothly and keep a calm, even tone.

Saying You Are a Dog or Cat Person

You can also share your preference. The line «私は猫派です。» means "I'm a cat person." In the dialogue, speaker A responds with «いいですね。私は猫派です。猫が好きです。», which means "That's nice. I'm a cat person. I like cats." This shows a friendly reaction and a clear preference. Speaker B then asks a follow-up question in «そうですか。猫を飼っていますか。», which means "I see. Do you have a cat?" This keeps the conversation going. When you practice, focus on the rhythm of the longer line «いいですね。私は猫派です。猫が好きです。». Say the short reaction first, then the preference, then the reason. Do not rush; clear pauses help your listener follow you.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    B

    そうですか。猫を飼っていますか。

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Pet Question Exchange

You will play both roles in a short exchange. First, you are speaker A and you ask about a pet. Then you are speaker B and you answer with a dog and a name. Use only the recorded lines.

Your task: Step 1: As speaker A, say the question from «ペットを飼っていますか。». Step 2: As speaker B, answer with «はい、犬を飼っています。名前はマックスです。». Step 3: As speaker A, respond with «いいですね。私は猫派です。猫が好きです。». Step 4: As speaker B, ask the follow-up from «そうですか。猫を飼っていますか。». Play the audio after each step to compare your timing and intonation.

    2

    Choose the Right Reply

Imagine a friend asks you the pet question. You will hear or read the question and then choose the best recorded reply from the options. This checks whether you understand the meaning of each line.

Your task: The question is «ペットを飼っていますか。». Which reply fits best? Option A: «犬を飼っています。». Option B: «私は猫派です。». Option C: «はい、犬を飼っています。名前はマックスです。». Say your choice out loud, then say the full reply. After that, practice the other two options as different possible answers.

    3

Recall the Conversation With Correct Roles

In this task you will rebuild the short dialogue from memory. Speaker A asks about a pet and later shares a cat preference. Speaker B answers with a dog and a name, then asks a follow-up question.

Your task: Say the dialogue in order: Speaker A: «ペットを飼っていますか。». Speaker B: «はい、犬を飼っています。名前はマックスです。». Speaker A: «いいですね。私は猫派です。猫が好きです。». Speaker B: «そうですか。猫を飼っていますか。». Do not read the lines first. After you finish, play the recordings and compare. Then switch roles and say the dialogue again.

    Common questions

Can I use these lines with a real person?

Yes. The recorded lines are short and polite enough for a friendly conversation. You can ask «ペットを飼っていますか。» to start, answer with «犬を飼っています。» or «はい、犬を飼っています。名前はマックスです。», and share a preference with «私は猫派です。» or «いいですね。私は猫派です。猫が好きです。». Keep your tone warm and give the other person time to reply.

What if I do not have a pet?

You can still use the question «ペットを飼っていますか。» and the preference line «私は猫派です。». If you do not have a pet, you can say that you are a cat person or a dog person instead of giving an animal and a name. The recorded lines give you a simple way to keep the conversation going without inventing new phrases.
