In this workshop, you will learn to suggest activities in Japanese using two common patterns: 'let's' and 'how about'. You will also practice responding to suggestions. The lesson uses short recorded lines to show how these patterns sound in real conversation. By the end, you will be able to make and respond to simple suggestions about activities like watching a movie or taking a walk.
Making Suggestions with 'Let's'
To suggest doing an activity together, you can use the 'let's' form of a verb. For example, «映画を見ましょう。» means 'Let's watch a movie.' Here, the verb 'to watch' changes to its 'let's' form. Similarly, «散歩に行きましょう。» means 'Let's go for a walk.' The verb 'to go' becomes its 'let's' form. Notice that the object or destination is marked by a particle. In «映画を見ましょう。», the particle 'o' marks 'movie' as the object. In «散歩に行きましょう。», the particle 'ni' marks the purpose of going. Practice saying these lines aloud, paying attention to the verb endings.
Making Softer Suggestions with 'How About'
Another way to suggest an activity is to use the pattern 'how about'. This is softer and less direct. For example, «映画はどうですか。» means 'How about a movie?' and «散歩はどうですか。» means 'How about a walk?' In these sentences, the activity noun is followed by the particle 'wa' (pronounced 'wa') and then 'dou desu ka'. This pattern is useful when you want to propose an idea without being pushy. You can replace the activity noun with other activities you know. Listen to the recordings and repeat.
Responding to Suggestions
When someone suggests an activity, you can accept or decline. In the recorded dialogue, speaker A asks if B is free today: «今日は暇ですか。». B replies that they are free and asks what they should do: «はい、暇です。何をしましょうか。». A then suggests a movie using the 'how about' pattern: «映画はどうですか。». B accepts and uses the 'let's' form to confirm: «いいですね。映画を見ましょう。». Notice how B says 'Sounds good' before agreeing. This shows enthusiasm. You can use similar phrases to respond. Practice the dialogue by playing both roles.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Yes, I'm free. What shall we do?映画はどうですか。
How about a movie?いいですね。映画を見ましょう。
Sounds good. Let's watch a movie.Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided Exchange: Suggest and Respond
You will play both roles in a short conversation. First, you are speaker A. You want to suggest watching a movie. Use the 'how about' pattern. Then, you are speaker B. You think it's a good idea and agree using the 'let's' pattern.
Your task: Say the line for speaker A: «映画はどうですか。». Then say the line for speaker B: «いいですね。映画を見ましょう。». Repeat the exchange, but this time suggest a walk instead of a movie. For speaker A, use «散歩はどうですか。». For speaker B, imagine you agree and say 'Let's go for a walk.' Use the pattern from «散歩に行きましょう。».
Reply Comprehension: Choose the Best Response
You will hear a suggestion and choose the best response from two options. The suggestion is «映画はどうですか。». Option 1: «いいですね。映画を見ましょう。». Option 2: «はい、暇です。何をしましょうか。».
Your task: Listen to «映画はどうですか。» (How about a movie?). Which option is a better response? Option 1 is «いいですね。映画を見ましょう。» (Sounds good. Let's watch a movie.). Option 2 is «はい、暇です。何をしましょうか。» (Yes, I'm free. What shall we do?). Think about which response directly answers the suggestion.
Recall with Correct Roles: Who Says What?
In the recorded dialogue, two speakers talk about plans. You will recall which speaker said which line. The lines are «今日は暇ですか。», «はい、暇です。何をしましょうか。», «映画はどうですか。», and «いいですね。映画を見ましょう。». Speaker A and Speaker B each said two lines.
Your task: Decide who said each line: Speaker A or Speaker B. Then say the dialogue aloud, playing both roles. Use the correct lines in order. After that, switch roles and say it again.
Common questions
What is the difference between 'let's' and 'how about' suggestions?
'Let's' suggestions are more direct and imply that you are ready to do the activity. For example, «映画を見ましょう。» means 'Let's watch a movie.' 'How about' suggestions are softer and more like proposing an idea. For example, «映画はどうですか。» means 'How about a movie?' You can use 'how about' to offer an option without pressure, and 'let's' to confirm or agree.
How do I respond if I don't like the suggestion?
This workshop focuses on accepting and making suggestions. The recorded activity options include «映画はどうですか。» and «散歩はどうですか。», but it does not teach a Japanese phrase for declining. Use the recorded lines to practice proposing an option and responding positively.
