In this workshop you will practice a short, friendly conversation about weekend plans in Japanese. You will learn how to say what you plan to do, how to ask someone else, and how to understand their answer. The practice uses short recorded lines, so you can listen, repeat, and then try both roles yourself. You do not need to know many words. Focus on speaking clearly and on listening for the key part of each answer. Take your time, repeat each line a few times, and say it out loud. Speaking a little every day is better than studying a lot once.

    Talking About Your Own Weekend

Start with simple statements about yourself. To say you will go hiking, you can use the line «週末は山に登りに行きます。». This means you are going hiking this weekend. If your plan is quieter, use «週末は家でゆっくりします。». This means you are just relaxing at home this weekend. Notice that both lines talk about the whole weekend. Say each line slowly, then a little faster. Keep your voice calm and friendly. When you can say both lines without looking, you are ready to answer a friend who asks about your weekend.

Asking a Friend and Understanding the Answer

A natural conversation needs a question. Use «週末は何をしますか。» to ask what someone will do this weekend. After you ask, listen for the plan. A friend may answer with «土曜日にハイキングに行く予定です。», which means they plan to go hiking on Saturday. You can reply with «いいですね。日曜日は?», which means that sounds nice, and then ask about Sunday. The friend may answer with «日曜日は家でゆっくりします。», which means on Sunday they will just relax at home. Listen for the day word and the activity. You do not need to catch every sound. Focus on the main plan.

    Splitting the Weekend into Days

Sometimes a plan is only for one day. Use «土曜日にハイキングに行く予定です。» to say you plan to go hiking on Saturday. If you have no plan for the other day, use «日曜日は何もしません。», which means you will not do anything on Sunday. These two lines are useful when your weekend is not the same on both days. Practice saying Saturday and Sunday plans together. First say the Saturday plan, then the Sunday plan. This helps you speak in a longer, more natural way.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Checking available voices…

    週末は山に登りに行きます。

    Nichiyōbi wa nani mo shimasen.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    B

Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Ask and Answer

Imagine a friend asks about your weekend. You will answer, then ask them back. Use only the lines you have practiced.

Your task: Say your own plan using «週末は山に登りに行きます。» or «週末は家でゆっくりします。». Then ask your friend using «週末は何をしますか。». After that, listen to the recording of «土曜日にハイキングに行く予定です。» and repeat it as if it were your friend's answer.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Right Plan

You will hear a short answer about weekend plans. Your job is to choose which plan matches. This is a listening and speaking check, not a test score.

Your task: Listen to «土曜日にハイキングに行く予定です。». Does the person plan to go hiking on Saturday, or relax at home on Sunday? Say the matching line out loud: «土曜日にハイキングに行く予定です。». Then listen to «日曜日は家でゆっくりします。» and say which day is for relaxing. Say the matching line out loud: «日曜日は家でゆっくりします。».

    3

    Recall with Correct Roles

Now you will try a short conversation from memory. One person asks about the weekend, and the other answers. You can play both roles.

Your task: First play the asking role. Say «週末は何をしますか。», then listen to «土曜日にハイキングに行く予定です。» as the answer. Next play the answering role. Listen to «週末は何をしますか。», then answer with «土曜日にハイキングに行く予定です。». Finally, use «いいですね。日曜日は?» and «日曜日は家でゆっくりします。» to continue the conversation about Sunday.

    Common questions

Do I need to understand every word in the recordings?

No. For beginner speaking, focus on the main plan and the day. Listen for the activity word and the day word. If you can say the line and understand the general meaning, that is enough for this practice.

Can I practice alone without a partner?

Yes. You can play both roles by yourself. Say the question out loud, then play the recorded answer and repeat it. Then switch roles. This gives you speaking and listening practice even when no one else is with you.
