At a post office in Japan, you may want to send a package abroad and ask what shipping options are available. In this workshop you will practice a short exchange between a customer and a staff member. You will first follow the dialogue, then check your understanding of the replies, and finally recall the exchange with the roles switched. Each native line is provided through a recording reference, and the English meaning is explained before you practice it.

Starting the request and asking about options

The customer begins by stating what they want to do. «この荷物をアメリカに送りたいのですが。» means that the speaker would like to send a package to America. The phrase for the destination comes after the word for package, so you can replace the destination with another country when needed. After making the request, the customer asks what shipping methods are available. «送り方には何がありますか。» means 'What shipping methods are there?' This is a useful question when you are not sure which service to choose. The staff member can then list the options. «はい、送り方にはEMSと船便があります。どちらになさいますか。» means 'Yes, we have EMS and surface mail. Which would you like?' Notice that the staff member offers two choices and then asks which one the customer wants. When you answer, you can name the service you prefer. «EMSでお願いします。» means 'EMS, please.' This is a short and polite way to choose EMS.

Choosing a service and asking about tracking

After choosing EMS, the customer asks about tracking. «追跡番号はありますか。» means 'Is there a tracking number?' This question is useful when you want to follow your package after sending it. The staff member confirms that tracking is available and gives an instruction. «はい、あります。こちらに住所と電話番号をお願いします。» means 'Yes, there is. Please provide the address and phone number here.' The staff member asks the customer to provide the address and phone number. In the full exchange, the customer's request and question can appear together. «EMSでお願いします。追跡番号はありますか。» means 'EMS, please. Is there a tracking number?' This combines the choice of service with the tracking question. The staff member's reply then confirms tracking and asks for the necessary information. «すみません、この荷物をフランスに送りたいのですが。» means 'Excuse me, I'd like to send this package to France.' This is another example of the opening request, with a different destination. You can use the same pattern with the country you need.

    Hear the phrases in context

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange: customer and staff

You are at a post office counter. You want to send a package to America. The staff member will help you. Read the customer lines aloud, and listen to the staff lines from the recordings.

Your task: Read the customer part aloud. Start with «この荷物をアメリカに送りたいのですが。». Then ask «送り方には何がありますか。». The staff member replies with «はい、送り方にはEMSと船便があります。どちらになさいますか。». Choose EMS by saying «EMSでお願いします。». Then ask «追跡番号はありますか。». The staff member answers with «はい、あります。こちらに住所と電話番号をお願いします。». After you finish, check your answer below.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the correct response

You will hear a staff reply and choose the customer line that fits. The staff member says «はい、送り方にはEMSと船便があります。どちらになさいますか。», which means 'Yes, we have EMS and surface mail. Which would you like?'

Your task: Which customer line is the best response to «はい、送り方にはEMSと船便があります。どちらになさいますか。»? Choose A, B, or C. A: «EMSでお願いします。». B: «追跡番号はありますか。». C: «この荷物をアメリカに送りたいのですが。». Then check the answer key below.

    3

    Recall and role swap

Cover the lines above. You will recall the exchange from memory. First, you are the customer. Then you will switch roles and be the staff member.

Your task: As the customer, say the opening request for America, ask about shipping methods, choose EMS, and ask about tracking. Use «この荷物をアメリカに送りたいのですが。», «送り方には何がありますか。», «EMSでお願いします。», and «追跡番号はありますか。» as your model. Then switch roles. As the staff member, offer EMS and surface mail, ask which one the customer wants, confirm tracking, and ask the customer to provide the address and phone number. Use «はい、送り方にはEMSと船便があります。どちらになさいますか。» and «はい、あります。こちらに住所と電話番号をお願いします。» as your model. Check your answer below.

    Common questions

Can I use these lines for a country other than America or France?

Yes. The destination appears in the opening request. «この荷物をアメリカに送りたいのですが。» shows America and «すみません、この荷物をフランスに送りたいのですが。» shows France. You can replace the destination with the country you need while keeping the same request pattern.

What should I say if I want to ask about tracking after choosing EMS?

You can combine the choice and the question. «EMSでお願いします。追跡番号はありますか。» means 'EMS, please. Is there a tracking number?' This shows how to choose EMS and then ask about tracking in one turn.
