When someone tells you something funny in Japanese, a short reaction keeps the conversation going. In this workshop, you will learn several common responses and practice using them in a guided exchange, a listening comprehension task, and a recall activity. You will also hear a short funny story and see how the listener reacts. The focus is on understanding and using these phrases in context, not on grammar rules.

    Common Reactions to Something Funny

These short phrases are used when you hear something funny. «面白い!» means 'That's funny!' and shows you found it amusing. «笑った。» means 'That made me laugh.' and is a bit more expressive. «うまい!» means 'Good one!' or 'Nice!' and works like a punchline appreciation. «なるほど。» means 'I see.' or 'That makes sense.' and is a neutral response, not necessarily funny. Use these to react naturally without needing long sentences.

    A Funny Convenience Store Story

Listen to this short story. Speaker A says: «ねえ、聞いて。昨日、コンビニで店員さんに「袋いりますか?」って聞かれて、「いいえ、結構です」って答えたら、袋に入れられちゃった。» — meaning: 'Hey, listen. Yesterday at the convenience store, the clerk asked me "Do you need a bag?" and I said "No, I'm fine," but they put it in a bag anyway.' Speaker B responds: «え、それって「結構です」が「袋に入れて結構です」って聞こえたの?面白い!» — meaning: 'Wait, so "kekkō desu" sounded like "it's fine to put it in a bag"? That's funny!' Speaker A continues: «そうそう。で、家に帰って袋を開けたら、中にレシートと一緒に「ご自由にお取りください」って書いた飴が入ってた。» — meaning: 'Exactly. And when I got home and opened the bag, inside with the receipt was a candy with a note saying "Please take one freely."' Speaker B reacts: «うまい!そのオチは完璧だね。笑ったよ。» — meaning: 'Good one! That punchline is perfect. I laughed.' Notice how B uses short reactions to keep the story going.

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    ねえ、聞いて。昨日、コンビニで店員さんに「袋いりますか?」って聞かれて、「いいえ、結構です」って答えたら、袋に入れられちゃった。

Hey, listen. Yesterday at the convenience store, the clerk asked me 'Do you need a bag?' and I said 'No, I'm fine,' but they put it in a bag anyway.
    B

    え、それって「結構です」が「袋に入れて結構です」って聞こえたの?面白い!

Wait, so 'kekkō desu' sounded like 'it's fine to put it in a bag'? That's funny!
    A

    そうそう。で、家に帰って袋を開けたら、中にレシートと一緒に「ご自由にお取りください」って書いた飴が入ってた。

Exactly. And when I got home and opened the bag, inside with the receipt was a candy with a note saying 'Please take one freely.'
    B

    うまい!そのオチは完璧だね。笑ったよ。

Good one! That punchline is perfect. I laughed.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided Exchange: React to the Story

You will play the role of Speaker B, reacting to Speaker A's story. Read along with the audio or have a partner read Speaker A's lines.

Your task: First, listen to Speaker A say «ねえ、聞いて。昨日、コンビニで店員さんに「袋いりますか?」って聞かれて、「いいえ、結構です」って答えたら、袋に入れられちゃった。». Then respond with «え、それって「結構です」が「袋に入れて結構です」って聞こえたの?面白い!». Next, listen to Speaker A say «そうそう。で、家に帰って袋を開けたら、中にレシートと一緒に「ご自由にお取りください」って書いた飴が入ってた。». Then respond with «うまい!そのオチは完璧だね。笑ったよ。». If you are working alone, you can say both parts, but keep the order: A speaks, then B responds.

    2

    Choose the Right Reaction

You will hear a short line and choose the best reaction from the options. The options are all phrases you have learned.

Your task: Imagine someone says «ねえ、聞いて。昨日、コンビニで店員さんに「袋いりますか?」って聞かれて、「いいえ、結構です」って答えたら、袋に入れられちゃった。» to you. Which reaction fits best? Option 1: «え、それって「結構です」が「袋に入れて結構です」って聞こえたの?面白い!». Option 2: «なるほど。». Option 3: «うまい!». Then imagine someone says «そうそう。で、家に帰って袋を開けたら、中にレシートと一緒に「ご自由にお取りください」って書いた飴が入ってた。». Which reaction fits best? Option 1: «うまい!そのオチは完璧だね。笑ったよ。». Option 2: «なるほど。». Option 3: «面白い!».

    3

    Recall the Story and React

You will retell the story in your own words (in English) and then use the Japanese reactions you learned. This helps you remember the phrases in context.

Your task: First, summarize what happened in the convenience store story in English. Then, imagine you are Speaker B. Say the two reactions you learned: one after the first part of the story, and one after the punchline. Use «え、それって「結構です」が「袋に入れて結構です」って聞こえたの?面白い!» and «うまい!そのオチは完璧だね。笑ったよ。».

    Common questions

Can I use these reactions for any funny story?

Yes, «面白い!», «笑った。», and «うまい!» are common reactions to something funny. «なるほど。» is more neutral and means 'I see.' or 'That makes sense.' It does not show amusement, so use it when you want to acknowledge something without saying it is funny.

What if I don't understand the joke?

You can still use «なるほど。» to show you are listening. For now, practice reacting with the phrases you have learned: «面白い!», «笑った。», «うまい!», and «なるほど。».
