In Japanese, people often do not ask for help directly. Instead, they may say something like «大丈夫ですか。» (Are you okay? / Is everything all right?) or mention a problem, such as «ああ、この箱は重いですね。» (Ah, this box is heavy, isn't it?). Your job is to notice the hint and respond naturally. This workshop gives you three short speaking tasks. You will play both roles, but there is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys to check yourself.
Notice the hint, then offer help
A hint is not always a direct request. When someone says «大丈夫ですか。» (Are you okay? / Is everything all right?), they are inviting the other person to explain. It does not offer help by itself. If you clearly understand that the person may need assistance, you can offer help with «手伝いましょうか。» (Shall I help you? / I'll help you.). For a more open-ended and slightly more formal offer, use «何かお手伝いしましょうか。» (Is there anything I can help with?). This works well with acquaintances, coworkers, or when the hint is vague. If the hint is about something specific, such as weight, you can show that you noticed and offer a specific action: «重そうですね。持ちましょうか。» (That looks heavy. Shall I carry it?). The first part shows you noticed; the second part offers to carry it.
Follow the box: a short exchange
Read this short scene. A says: «ああ、この箱は重いですね。» (Ah, this box is heavy, isn't it?). B responds: «重そうですね。持ちましょうか。» (It looks heavy. Shall I carry it?). A accepts: «すみません、お願いします。» (Thank you, please do.). B replies: «いいえ、大丈夫ですよ。どこまで運びますか。» (No problem. Where should I carry it to?). Notice that B does not simply say “I will help.” B first shows understanding, then offers a specific action, and finally asks for the destination. The question «どこまで運びますか。» asks how far or to what point to carry the box. It is not a direction instruction like “turn right.” It asks for a destination.
Accept, decline, or ask for clarification
When someone offers help, you can accept with «すみません、お願いします。» (Thank you, please do.). If you do not need help, you can say «いいえ、大丈夫ですよ。» (No problem. / I'm fine.). If the offer is unclear, you can ask a clarifying question. For example, if someone says «何かお手伝いしましょうか。» (Is there anything I can help with?), you can answer with a specific request or say what you need. You can also ask «どこまで運びますか。» (Where should I carry it to?) when you are the one helping and need the destination. These phrases let you stay polite without forcing a direct request.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

No problem. Where should I carry it to?Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided exchange: offer to carry the box
You are B. A has just said «ああ、この箱は重いですね。» (Ah, this box is heavy, isn't it?). You want to show that you noticed and offer to carry it.
Your task: Say your line aloud in Japanese. Use the hint about weight and offer a specific action. Then play A and accept your offer. Finally, play B again and ask where to carry it.
Reply comprehension: choose the right response
You hear someone say «何かお手伝いしましょうか。» (Is there anything I can help with?). You do not need help right now.
Your task: Choose the best reply and say it aloud: (a) «すみません、お願いします。» (Thank you, please do.) or (b) «いいえ、大丈夫ですよ。» (No problem. / I'm fine.). Then say what you would reply if you did need help.
Recall with correct roles: who says what?
Review the short scene. A says «ああ、この箱は重いですね。» B says «重そうですね。持ちましょうか。» A says «すみません、お願いします。» B says «いいえ、大丈夫ですよ。どこまで運びますか。»
Your task: Without looking, say the four lines in order. Then switch roles: you play A first, then B. Make sure the person who offers help is B, and the person who accepts is A.
Common questions
What should I say first when I notice someone might need help?
Start with a safe, general phrase like «大丈夫ですか。» (Are you okay? / Is everything all right?). It invites the person to explain without forcing a request. If you clearly understand the problem, you can then offer help with «手伝いましょうか。» (Shall I help you? / I'll help you.) or «何かお手伝いしましょうか。» (Is there anything I can help with?).
How do I ask where to carry something after offering help?
Use «どこまで運びますか。» (Where should I carry it to?). This asks for the destination or how far to carry the item. It is not a direction instruction like “turn right.” You can use it after saying «持ちましょうか。» (Shall I carry it?) when the person accepts your offer.
