At many Japanese checkouts, the staff may ask whether you need a bag. In this workshop you will practice a simple, polite pattern for asking for a bag or a box, and you will also practice understanding the cashier's question and replying. You will hear short native lines and then use them in guided speaking tasks. The key pattern is a noun followed by a request word. You can swap the noun to ask for different containers. Listen carefully to each recording, repeat it aloud, and then try the tasks. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic scoring, so check your answers with the notes after each task.

    The basic request pattern

The core pattern is simple: say the item you want, then add the request word. The recording «袋をください。» means "Please give me a bag." The first word is the item, and the final word makes the request polite. If you want a box instead, you can use the same pattern with a different item word. The recording «箱をください。» means "Please give me a box." This is useful when you want to protect something fragile. If you want a paper bag specifically, use the recording «紙袋をください。», which means "Please give me a paper bag." Notice that only the first word changes. The ending stays the same, so once you know one line, you can make the others by swapping the item word. Practice each line slowly, then a little faster. Keep your voice clear and friendly.

When the cashier asks about a bag

At the checkout, the staff may greet you and then ask a question. The recording «いらっしゃいませ。袋は要りますか。» means "Welcome. Do you need a bag?" The first part is a greeting, and the second part is the question. If you do need a bag, you can answer with the recording «はい、袋をください。», which means "Yes, please give me a bag." If you do not need one, you can use the recording «袋は要りません。», which means "I don't need a bag." This is polite and common when you have your own bag. Listen for the question word at the end of the cashier's line. Your answer can be short. You do not need to add extra words. Just choose the line that matches your situation and say it clearly.

    Choosing between two options

Sometimes the cashier may offer a choice. The recording «かしこまりました。大きい袋と小さい袋がありますが、どちらにしますか。» means "Certainly. We have a large bag and a small bag; which would you like?" You will hear two item words connected, and then a question about which one you want. To choose, say the item you want and add the request word. For example, you can use the recording «小さい袋をお願いします。それと、卵は箱に入れてもらえますか。», which means "A small bag, please. And could you put the eggs in a box?" This line shows two requests in one turn. The first part asks for a small bag, and the second part asks about putting something in a box. When you practice, focus on the first part if you only need a bag. The second part is useful if you also want a box for something. Listen to the whole line, then repeat it in two parts: first the bag request, then the box request.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    いらっしゃいませ。袋は要りますか。

Welcome. Do you need a bag?
    B

    はい、袋をください。

Yes, please give me a bag.
    A

    かしこまりました。大きい袋と小さい袋がありますが、どちらにしますか。

Certainly. We have a large bag and a small bag; which would you like?
    B

    小さい袋をお願いします。それと、卵は箱に入れてもらえますか。

A small bag, please. And could you put the eggs in a box?
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask for a bag

Imagine you are at a checkout and the cashier has just greeted you. You want a bag. You will play your role and respond aloud.

Your task: Listen to the cashier's question in «いらっしゃいませ。袋は要りますか。». Then say the line from «袋をください。» as your reply. Repeat the exchange three times: once slowly, once at normal speed, and once without looking at the text.

    2

Reply comprehension: do you need a bag?

You will hear a cashier's question and choose the correct reply for two different situations. This checks whether you understand the question and can pick a suitable answer.

Your task: Listen to «いらっしゃいませ。袋は要りますか。». Situation one: you do need a bag. Say the reply from «はい、袋をください。». Situation two: you have your own bag and do not need one. Say the reply from «袋は要りません。». Do both situations twice, and say each reply aloud.

    3

    Recall with correct roles

In this task you will play both roles in a longer exchange. One role is the customer, and the other role is the staff. You will use the recordings as your model.

Your task: First, play the customer. Listen to «かしこまりました。大きい袋と小さい袋がありますが、どちらにしますか。» and then say the customer's line from «小さい袋をお願いします。それと、卵は箱に入れてもらえますか。». Focus on the first part, where the customer asks for a small bag. Then switch roles. Play the staff and say the line from «かしこまりました。大きい袋と小さい袋がありますが、どちらにしますか。» after you hear the customer's request. Do this twice for each role.

    Common questions

Do I need to memorize every line exactly?

No. Focus on the pattern first. The item word changes, but the request ending stays the same. Once you can say one line smoothly, you can swap in another item word. Use the recordings as models and repeat them until they feel natural. It is fine to start slowly and build speed over time.

What if I do not understand the cashier's question?

Listen for the word for bag and the question ending. The recording «いらっしゃいませ。袋は要りますか。» shows the common question. If you are not sure, you can simply say the line from «袋をください。» to ask for a bag, or the line from «袋は要りません。» if you do not need one. In real life you can also ask the staff to repeat, but for this practice, focus on recognizing the question and choosing a suitable reply.
