Japanese Speaking Practice: Asking If There Are Questions

Beginner speaking practice for offering to answer questions and responding politely in Japanese, using recorded model lines.

Free lesson path Phrase audioNo sign-up needed

In many lessons and meetings, the speaker checks whether the audience has questions. This workshop helps you say those lines naturally and respond when someone offers help. You will hear short recorded examples, learn what each line means in English, and then practice both roles: the person offering to take questions and the person who has a question. You can play both roles aloud with the recordings. There is no automatic scoring, so use the answer checks to compare your speaking and listening choices.

    Offering to Take Questions

When you finish explaining something, you can invite questions. A simple, polite line is «何か質問があれば、聞いてください。». It means the speaker is ready to listen if anyone has a question. A slightly softer version is «何か質問があれば、聞いてくださいね。», which sounds friendly and puts less pressure on the listener. If you want to focus on things that may be confusing, you can say «ご不明な点がございましたら、お知らせください。». This means you are asking people to tell you about anything they did not understand. In a more formal setting, such as a class or a business meeting, «何かご質問がございましたら、お気軽にお問い合わせください。» works well because it sounds considerate and professional. Notice that all of these lines are offers, not commands. Your tone should be open and calm.

    A Short Question-and-Answer Exchange

Here is a short scene. Speaker A finishes a talk and says «今日の説明はここまでです。何か質問があれば、聞いてください。». This means the explanation is finished and questions are welcome. Speaker B then asks for help with one point: «はい、一つ質問があります。この部分をもう一度説明していただけますか。». This means the listener has a question and wants one part explained again. Speaker A answers kindly with «もちろんです。ご不明な点がございましたら、いつでもお知らせください。», which means the speaker is happy to help and invites the listener to speak up at any time. Speaker B closes politely with «ありがとうございます。あとでメールでお知らせします。», meaning the listener will contact the speaker later by email. In this exchange, A is the person leading the session, and B is the person who needs clarification. When you practice, try both roles. As A, keep your voice warm and patient. As B, speak clearly and thank the other person.

    Choosing the Right Line

The lines above are similar, but they fit different moments. Use «何か質問があれば、聞いてください。» or «何か質問があれば、聞いてくださいね。» when you simply want to invite questions. Use «ご不明な点がございましたら、お知らせください。» when you want to check for anything unclear. Use «何かご質問がございましたら、お気軽にお問い合わせください。» when you need a more formal, considerate tone. In the dialogue, «今日の説明はここまでです。何か質問があれば、聞いてください。» closes the explanation and opens the question time. «はい、一つ質問があります。この部分をもう一度説明していただけますか。» is a polite way to ask for one more explanation. «もちろんです。ご不明な点がございましたら、いつでもお知らせください。» reassures the listener, and «ありがとうございます。あとでメールでお知らせします。» shows that the listener will follow up later. When you speak, match your volume and speed to the room. If you are the listener, wait until the speaker invites questions, then ask one clear question at a time.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    今日の説明はここまでです。何か質問があれば、聞いてください。

That's all for today's explanation. If you have any questions, please ask.
    B

    はい、一つ質問があります。この部分をもう一度説明していただけますか。

Yes, I have one question. Could you explain this part once more?
    A

    もちろんです。ご不明な点がございましたら、いつでもお知らせください。

Of course. If anything is unclear, please let me know anytime.
    B

    ありがとうございます。あとでメールでお知らせします。

Thank you. I will let you know by email later.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Offer and Ask

You will play both roles in a short practice scene. First, imagine you have just finished explaining a topic to a small group. Then imagine you are a listener who has one question.

Your task: Step 1: As the speaker, say the line «今日の説明はここまでです。何か質問があれば、聞いてください。» aloud. Step 2: As the listener, reply with «はい、一つ質問があります。この部分をもう一度説明していただけますか。». Step 3: As the speaker, answer with «もちろんです。ご不明な点がございましたら、いつでもお知らせください。». Step 4: As the listener, close with «ありがとうございます。あとでメールでお知らせします。». Repeat the exchange twice, changing which role you speak first.

    2

    Reply Comprehension: Which Line Fits?

Read each situation below. Then choose the recorded line that best fits. You may say your choice aloud before checking.

Your task: Situation 1: You finish a presentation and want to invite questions in a friendly way. Situation 2: You want to ask people to tell you if anything is unclear. Situation 3: A listener asks you to explain one part again, and you want to say yes and offer more help. Situation 4: You are the listener, and you want to say you will contact the speaker later by email.

    3

    Recall with Correct Roles

This time, cover the lines and try to remember them from meaning alone. Imagine a short lesson scene with a speaker and a listener.

Your task: Step 1: As the speaker, say the line that means the explanation is finished and questions are welcome. Step 2: As the listener, say the line that means you have one question and want one part explained again. Step 3: As the speaker, say the line that means of course, and ask the listener to let you know anytime if anything is unclear. Step 4: As the listener, say the line that means you will let the speaker know by email later.

    Common questions

Do I need to memorize every line before speaking?

No. Start by listening to the recordings and repeating them slowly. Then try the guided exchange with the lines visible. After that, move to the recall exercise and say the lines from memory. It is fine to check and repeat. The goal is to become comfortable with the meaning and the polite tone, not to perform perfectly on the first try.

Can I use these lines outside a classroom?

Yes, these lines are useful in many situations where you explain something and invite questions, such as a small meeting, a study group, or a community event. The more formal line «何かご質問がございましたら、お気軽にお問い合わせください。» fits business or official settings, while «何か質問があれば、聞いてください。» and «何か質問があれば、聞いてくださいね。» are friendly and simple. Choose the line that matches the situation and your relationship with the listener.
