In this workshop you will learn to ask what time a meal is and to answer with the correct time. You will also practice understanding a reply that corrects a wrong guess. The recorded lines give you short, clear examples for breakfast and lunch. You will read both roles, check your understanding, and then recall the lines from memory.

    Asking and Answering About Breakfast

When you want to know the time of a meal, you can ask a simple question. The recorded line «朝ごはんは何時ですか。» means 'What time is breakfast?'. The reply «七時です。» means 'It's at seven o'clock.' Notice that the question asks about breakfast, and the answer gives the time for breakfast. In a conversation, one person asks and the other answers. You can practice both roles: first ask the question, then give the answer. The statement «朝ごはんを食べます。» means 'I eat breakfast.' This is a simple way to say that you eat breakfast, without giving a time. Use «朝ごはんは何時ですか。» and «七時です。» as a pair when you want to ask and answer about breakfast time.

    Checking and Correcting Lunch Time

Sometimes you think you know the time, but you are not sure. You can check by asking a question. The recorded line «昼ごはんも七時ですか。» means 'Is lunch also at seven?'. This question asks if lunch is at the same time as something else, here seven o'clock. The answer «いいえ、昼ごはんは十二時です。» means 'No, lunch is at twelve o'clock.' This reply corrects the guess and gives the right time. The statement «昼ごはんは十二時です。» means 'Lunch is at twelve o'clock.' It simply states the time for lunch. When you hear a correction like «いいえ、昼ごはんは十二時です。», you learn the correct time. Practice asking «昼ごはんも七時ですか。» and answering with «いいえ、昼ごはんは十二時です。». You can also use «昼ごはんは十二時です。» to state the lunch time directly.

    1

Guided Exchange: Ask and Answer About Breakfast

You will practice a short conversation about breakfast time. One person asks the question, and the other gives the answer. Use the recorded lines as your model.

Your task: Read the question «朝ごはんは何時ですか。» aloud. Then read the answer «七時です。» aloud. After that, switch roles: your partner reads «朝ごはんは何時ですか。» and you read «七時です。». Do this two times.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Is Lunch at Seven?

You will hear a question about lunch time and choose the correct reply. The question asks if lunch is also at seven o'clock.

Your task: Read the question «昼ごはんも七時ですか。». Then choose the correct answer from these two options: Option A: «いいえ、昼ごはんは十二時です。» (No, lunch is at twelve o'clock.) Option B: «七時です。» (It's at seven o'clock.) Say your choice aloud.

    3

Recall with Correct Roles: Breakfast and Lunch Times

You will recall the lines from memory and practice both roles. One person asks about breakfast, the other answers. Then one person checks lunch time, and the other corrects.

Your task: First, without looking at the recorded lines, say the question for breakfast time and the answer for breakfast time. Then say the question that checks if lunch is at seven, and the answer that corrects it to twelve. After you try, check your answers with the recorded lines.

    Common questions

Can I use these phrases for other meals like dinner or snack?

The recorded lines here show breakfast and lunch. In this workshop we focus on breakfast and lunch. The pattern of asking and answering about time is similar for other meals, but the specific words for each meal may be different. Practice with the recorded lines provided to get comfortable with the pattern.

What should I do if I make a mistake in the recall exercise?

If you make a mistake, read the recorded line again and repeat it. Then try the recall once more. It is normal to need a few tries. The goal is to remember the question and the correct answer for each meal time. With practice, you will be able to say them without looking.
