In this workshop you will practice offering help and responding when someone offers help. You will hear short recorded lines and use them in guided exchanges. The focus is on polite offers, accepting help, and asking a simple follow-up question. You will also practice choosing the right reply and recalling the lines with the correct roles.

    Offering help

When you want to offer help, you can use a short question. «何か手伝いましょうか。» means that you are asking whether you can help with anything. «手伝いましょうか。» is a shorter offer meaning that you are asking whether you should help. «何か手伝うことはありますか。» asks whether there is anything you can help with. «手伝おうか。» is a casual offer meaning that you are asking whether the other person wants you to help. These lines all offer help, but they differ in length and tone. In a simple situation, choose one line and say it clearly. Do not add extra words that you have not practiced.

Accepting help and asking how far

When someone offers help, you can accept it. «すみません、じゃあ、このかばんをお願いします。» means that you are thanking the person and asking them to take a bag. After you accept, the helper may ask a follow-up question. «わかりました。どこまで行きますか。» means that the helper understands and asks how far you are going. Then you can answer with your destination. «駅までです。助かります。» means that you are going to the station and that the help is a big help. In this scene, one person offers help, the other accepts, the helper asks how far, and the traveler answers. Keep that order when you practice.

    A full short exchange

You can combine the recorded lines into one short exchange. The helper notices heavy bags and offers help with «あ、荷物が重そうですね。何か手伝いましょうか。», which means that the bags look heavy and the helper asks whether they can help with anything. The traveler accepts with «すみません、じゃあ、このかばんをお願いします。», which means thank you, then please take this bag. The helper confirms and asks how far with «わかりました。どこまで行きますか。», which means got it, how far are you going. The traveler answers with «駅までです。助かります。», which means to the station, and that helps a lot. Practice this order: offer, accept, follow-up question, answer. If you swap roles, the order stays the same.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    B

Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided offer and acceptance

Imagine you are at a station entrance. One person has heavy bags. You will play the helper first, then the traveler. Use only the recorded lines.

Your task: Helper: say «あ、荷物が重そうですね。何か手伝いましょうか。» to offer help. Traveler: accept with «すみません、じゃあ、このかばんをお願いします。». Helper: ask how far with «わかりました。どこまで行きますか。». Traveler: answer with «駅までです。助かります。». Then swap roles and repeat the same order.

    2

    Choose the right reply

Imagine a helper says «あ、荷物が重そうですね。何か手伝いましょうか。» to you. You have heavy bags and you want the helper to take one bag. Choose the best reply from the recorded lines.

Your task: Read the helper's line «あ、荷物が重そうですね。何か手伝いましょうか。». Then choose the traveler's reply: «すみません、じゃあ、このかばんをお願いします。» or «駅までです。助かります。». Say your chosen line aloud. Then say the helper's next line «わかりました。どこまで行きますか。» and the traveler's final line «駅までです。助かります。».

    3

    Recall with correct roles

Imagine the same scene again, but this time you will recall the lines without looking at them first. One person offers help, the other accepts, the helper asks how far, and the traveler answers.

Your task: Say the helper's offer from memory using «あ、荷物が重そうですね。何か手伝いましょうか。». Then say the traveler's acceptance using «すみません、じゃあ、このかばんをお願いします。». Then say the helper's follow-up question using «わかりました。どこまで行きますか。». Then say the traveler's answer using «駅までです。助かります。». After that, swap roles and say the same four lines in the same order.

    Common questions

Can I use «手伝いましょうか。» instead of «あ、荷物が重そうですね。何か手伝いましょうか。» when I offer help?

Yes. «手伝いましょうか。» is a short offer meaning that you are asking whether you should help. «あ、荷物が重そうですね。何か手伝いましょうか。» also offers help, but it mentions heavy bags and asks whether you can help with anything. Both can offer help, but choose the line that fits the situation you are practicing.

What should I say first when someone offers help?

If you want to accept, say «すみません、じゃあ、このかばんをお願いします。». It means thank you, then please take this bag. After that, the helper may ask how far you are going with «わかりました。どこまで行きますか。», and you can answer with «駅までです。助かります。». Do not begin with «駅までです。助かります。», because it answers the follow-up question about your destination.
