In this workshop you will practice a short, friendly conversation about studying together. You will hear and repeat recorded Japanese lines, choose suitable replies, and then recall the exchange with the roles switched. The goal is to become comfortable making a study invitation, asking for a time, and agreeing to a plan.
Making a Study Invitation
A study invitation often starts with a friendly offer. The recorded line «一緒に勉強しませんか。» means "Would you like to study together?" It is a polite way to invite someone to study with you. Another useful line is «日本語を勉強したいです。», which means "I want to study Japanese." This expresses your own goal. When you want to suggest a specific time and place, you can use «明日、図書館で勉強しませんか。», meaning "Shall we study at the library tomorrow?" Notice that the invitation comes first, and the other person can then respond. Practice saying each line aloud, paying attention to a clear, friendly tone.
Responding and Setting Details
After an invitation, the other person may agree and ask for more information. The recorded line «いいですね。何時からですか。» means "That sounds good. From what time?" This shows agreement and asks about the starting time. To suggest a time, you can use «三時から図書館でどうですか。», which means "How about from three o'clock at the library?" This gives both a time and a place. If you want to talk about a goal, «試験までに終わらせたいです。» means "I want to finish it by the exam." And «いいですよ。金曜日の試験までに終わらせましょう。» means "Sounds good. Let's finish it by Friday's exam." This agrees and adds a deadline. Practice these lines in order: invitation, agreement with a question, time suggestion, and agreement with a goal.
Putting the Conversation Together
Now combine the lines into a full exchange. One person can start with «明日、一緒に日本語を勉強しませんか。», which means "Would you like to study Japanese together tomorrow?" The other person can reply with «いいですね。何時からですか。», meaning "That sounds good. From what time?" Then the first person suggests a time with «三時から図書館でどうですか。», meaning "How about from three o'clock at the library?" Finally, the second person agrees and adds a goal with «いいですよ。金曜日の試験までに終わらせましょう。», meaning "Sounds good. Let's finish it by Friday's exam." Practice both roles. When you switch roles, the order of the conversation stays the same: invitation, reply with a question, time suggestion, and final agreement.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Guided Exchange: Invite and Respond
You are Person A. You want to invite Person B to study Japanese together tomorrow. Use the recorded line for the invitation.
Your task: Say the invitation line «明日、一緒に日本語を勉強しませんか。» aloud. Then pause and imagine Person B replies with «いいですね。何時からですか。». After that, suggest a time and place using «三時から図書館でどうですか。». Finally, imagine Person B agrees with «いいですよ。金曜日の試験までに終わらせましょう。». Say all of Person A's lines in order.
Choose the Suitable Reply
Person A says «明日、一緒に日本語を勉強しませんか。», which means "Would you like to study Japanese together tomorrow?" You need to choose a suitable reply from the recorded lines.
Your task: Which recorded line is a suitable reply to «明日、一緒に日本語を勉強しませんか。»? Choose one: «日本語を勉強したいです。», «いいですね。何時からですか。», or «試験までに終わらせたいです。». Say your chosen line aloud. Then check the answer key below.
Recall the Conversation with Roles Switched
You will recall the full conversation from memory. First, you are Person A. Later, you will switch to Person B. The order of the conversation stays the same.
Your task: As Person A, say the invitation «明日、一緒に日本語を勉強しませんか。». Then imagine Person B replies with «いいですね。何時からですか。». Next, say the time suggestion «三時から図書館でどうですか。». Finally, imagine Person B agrees with «いいですよ。金曜日の試験までに終わらせましょう。». After that, switch roles: as Person B, respond to «明日、一緒に日本語を勉強しませんか。» with «いいですね。何時からですか。», then respond to «三時から図書館でどうですか。» with «いいですよ。金曜日の試験までに終わらせましょう。». Try to say the lines without looking at the text.
Common questions
Do I need to memorize every line before speaking?
No. You can keep the recorded lines visible while you practice. Start by reading them aloud, then try to say them with fewer glances at the text. Memorizing gradually is fine.
What if I am not sure which line is a suitable reply?
Look at the meaning of the line you hear. If someone invites you to study, a suitable reply agrees and may ask for a time. If someone suggests a time and place, a suitable reply agrees and may add a goal. Use the followUp and success criteria in the exercise to check your choice.
