In this workshop you will practice a short hotel conversation in Japanese. You are already checked in, and you want to stay one more night. You will practice asking about extending your stay, asking whether a room is available, and understanding the new checkout time. You can play both the guest and the staff member. Listen to the recorded lines, repeat them aloud, and then try the three tasks. Say each line slowly first, then a little faster. If a line feels long, pause in the middle, then join the parts together.

Asking to stay one more night

Start with a simple, polite question. «もう一泊泊まれますか。» means "Can I stay one more night?" The word for one night is ippaku, and tomaremasu ka asks whether staying is possible. A slightly more formal option is «あと一泊延泊できますか。», which means "Can I extend my stay by one more night?" The word enpaku means extension of stay, and this line is common at hotel front desks. If you want to name the end point of your stay, use «明日まで泊まれますか。», which means "Can I stay until tomorrow?" The word made means until. When you speak, keep your voice calm and friendly. It also helps to begin with sumimasen, as in «すみません、もう一泊泊まれますか。», which means "Excuse me, can I stay one more night?"

Checking availability and confirming the new date

After you ask, the staff member may need time to check. «少々お待ちください。空室を確認します。» means "Please wait a moment. I will check for available rooms." The word kūshitsu means vacant room, and kakunin shimasu means I will check. You can also ask about availability yourself with «空室はありますか。», which means "Do you have any rooms available?" When you want to accept the offer to check, say «はい、お願いします。明日まで泊まりたいです。», which means "Yes, please. I would like to stay until tomorrow." Finally, listen for the new checkout time. «はい、大丈夫です。チェックアウトは明日の十一時です。» means "Yes, that is fine. Checkout is tomorrow at eleven o'clock." The key part is chekkuauto wa ashita no jūichi-ji desu, meaning checkout is tomorrow at eleven. Repeat the time back to yourself so you remember it.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Checking available voices…

    もう一泊泊まれますか。

Can I stay one more night?

    Mō ippaku tomaremasu ka.

    あと一泊延泊できますか。

Can I extend my stay by one more night?

    Ato ippaku enpaku dekimasu ka.

    空室はありますか。

Do you have any rooms available?

    Kūshitsu wa arimasu ka.

    明日まで泊まれますか。

    Can I stay until tomorrow?

    Ashita made tomaremasu ka.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    すみません、もう一泊泊まれますか。

Excuse me, can I stay one more night?
    B

    少々お待ちください。空室を確認します。

Please wait a moment. I will check for available rooms.
    A

    はい、お願いします。明日まで泊まりたいです。

Yes, please. I would like to stay until tomorrow.
    B

    はい、大丈夫です。チェックアウトは明日の十一時です。

Yes, that is fine. Checkout is tomorrow at eleven o'clock.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided front desk exchange

Imagine you are at a hotel front desk. You are already checked in and want one more night. The staff member will check availability and tell you the new checkout time.

Your task: Play the guest first. Say «すみません、もう一泊泊まれますか。» aloud. Then play the staff member and say «少々お待ちください。空室を確認します。». Switch back to the guest and say «はい、お願いします。明日まで泊まりたいです。». Finally, play the staff member and say «はい、大丈夫です。チェックアウトは明日の十一時です。». Repeat the whole exchange twice, then try it once without looking at the lines.

    2

    Choose the right reply

Follow the sequence in the recorded model: first the staff has not checked availability; later the check is complete and the extension is possible. Match each stage to the staff line.

Your task: Guest line: «もう一泊泊まれますか。». Before checking availability, which staff reply fits: «少々お待ちください。空室を確認します。» or «はい、大丈夫です。チェックアウトは明日の十一時です。»? Say your choice aloud. Then guest line: «はい、お願いします。明日まで泊まりたいです。». After confirming a room is available, which staff reply fits: «少々お待ちください。空室を確認します。» or «はい、大丈夫です。チェックアウトは明日の十一時です。»? Say your choice aloud. After choosing, say the full reply line for each one.

    3

Recall the conversation with correct roles

Now try the conversation from memory. Keep the same scene: a guest asks to stay one more night, and the staff member checks and gives the new checkout time.

Your task: Without looking at the lines, say the guest opening, the staff checking line, the guest acceptance line, and the staff final line. Use the recorded lines as your model. If you forget a line, listen again, then repeat it. After one full round, switch roles and do it again.

    Common questions

What is the difference between «もう一泊泊まれますか。» and «あと一泊延泊できますか。»?

Both ask about staying longer. «もう一泊泊まれますか。» means "Can I stay one more night?" and is direct but polite. «あと一泊延泊できますか。» means "Can I extend my stay by one more night?" and sounds a little more formal because it uses the word enpaku, meaning extension of stay. At a hotel front desk, either one can work.

How do I understand the new checkout time in «はい、大丈夫です。チェックアウトは明日の十一時です。»?

In «はい、大丈夫です。チェックアウトは明日の十一時です。», the important part is chekkuauto wa ashita no jūichi-ji desu. Chekkuauto means checkout, ashita means tomorrow, and jūichi-ji means eleven o'clock. So the line tells you that checkout is tomorrow at eleven. Repeat the time back to yourself to remember it.
