In this workshop you will practice a short, useful exchange with a bus or taxi driver. You will learn how to make the request, say where you are getting off, check that the driver understood, and respond when the driver confirms. You can play both roles with the recordings. Use the recordings to compare what you said and to hear the rhythm of each line.

Make the request and check understanding

Start with a polite request. The line «降りるときに教えてください。» means "Please tell me when to get off." Use it when you get on a bus or taxi and want the driver to warn you before your stop. After you speak, you can check that the driver understood. The line «わかりましたか。» means "Did you understand?" or "Is that clear?" It is polite enough with a driver, though a little direct. Say your request first, then the check. Keep your voice calm and clear. If you are not sure the driver heard you, repeat the request once.

Say your stop and respond to the driver

When you board, you can say your stop and make the request together. In the recording, the passenger says «すみません、ABC停留所で降ります。降りるときに教えてください。», which means "Excuse me, I am getting off at ABC stop. Please tell me when to get off." The driver answers with «はい、わかりました。ABC停留所ですね。», meaning "Yes, understood. ABC stop, right?" You can confirm with «はい、そうです。ありがとうございます。», which means "Yes, that is right. Thank you." Later, when your stop is near, the driver may say «次ですよ。», meaning "It is the next stop." Listen for the driver's confirmation and for the next-stop announcement. If you are in a taxi and want to stop now, you can say «ここで降ります。», which means "I will get off here."

Use the right line at the right time

The recordings cover two moments: boarding and arriving. At boarding, use «降りるときに教えてください。» or «すみません、ABC停留所で降ります。降りるときに教えてください。» to ask the driver to tell you when to get off. If you want to check that the driver understood, add «わかりましたか。». When the driver confirms with «はい、わかりました。ABC停留所ですね。», answer with «はい、そうです。ありがとうございます。». When the driver says «次ですよ。», you know your stop is next. In a taxi, if you want to get off at the current place, say «ここで降ります。». The line «次は私の降りる停留所です。» means "The next stop is my stop," but it is a little unnatural in Japanese. A more natural way is to say the stop name with «すみません、ABC停留所で降ります。降りるときに教えてください。» or to wait for the driver's «次ですよ。». Use the recordings to hear the rhythm, then say each line yourself.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    すみません、ABC停留所で降ります。降りるときに教えてください。

Excuse me, I am getting off at ABC stop. Please tell me when to get off.
    B

    はい、わかりました。ABC停留所ですね。

    Yes, understood. ABC stop, right?
    A

    はい、そうです。ありがとうございます。

Yes, that is right. Thank you.
    B

    次ですよ。

    It is the next stop.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange: board and ask

Imagine you are on a bus. You want the driver to tell you when to get off. You will play the passenger first, then the driver.

Your task: Play the passenger. Say the request from «降りるときに教えてください。». Then say the check from «わかりましたか。». Next, play the driver. Listen to the passenger's request and reply with the confirmation from «はい、わかりました。ABC停留所ですね。». Finally, play the passenger again and thank the driver with «はい、そうです。ありがとうございます。».

    2

Reply comprehension: what did the driver say?

You have asked the driver to tell you when to get off. Now listen to the driver's reply and choose the correct meaning.

Your task: Listen to «はい、わかりました。ABC停留所ですね。». Does it mean the driver understood and repeated your stop, or does it mean the driver did not understand? Then listen to «次ですよ。». Does it mean your stop is next, or does it mean the bus is full? Say your answers aloud, then compare with the recording.

    3

Recall and role swap: passenger and driver

Now practice without looking at the lines. You will play both roles in a short bus scene.

Your task: First, play the passenger. Say your stop and ask the driver to tell you when to get off, using «すみません、ABC停留所で降ります。降りるときに教えてください。». Then play the driver and reply with «はい、わかりました。ABC停留所ですね。». Swap roles: play the driver first, then the passenger. As the passenger, confirm and thank the driver with «はい、そうです。ありがとうございます。». Finally, as the driver, announce the next stop with «次ですよ。».

    Common questions

When should I use the request line?

Use «降りるときに教えてください。» when you get on a bus or taxi and want the driver to tell you when to get off. Say it clearly at the start of the ride. If you also want to check that the driver understood, add «わかりましたか。» after the request.

What should I say when the driver confirms my stop?

When the driver says «はい、わかりました。ABC停留所ですね。», you can answer with «はい、そうです。ありがとうございます。». It means "Yes, that is right. Thank you." This confirms the stop and thanks the driver. Later, when the driver says «次ですよ。», you know your stop is next.
