In this workshop you will practice polite Japanese for asking small favors. You will hear short, useful lines and then say them yourself. The focus is on three common situations: asking someone to take a photo, asking to borrow notes, and asking for a little help. You will also practice understanding a friendly reply and choosing the right response. The four phrase recordings and the four dialogue lines are playable, so you can copy the rhythm and politeness exactly. Work through the sections, then do the three speaking tasks. You can repeat each speaker's line after the recording, but you will check your own answers using the provided keys.

    Starting a Polite Request

A polite request often begins with a short attention-getter. In «すみません、写真を撮ってもらえますか。», the speaker says a full line that means "Excuse me, could you take a picture for me?" This is a complete, ready-to-use request. You can say it when you want a stranger or a staff member to take your photo. The line starts softly, so it sounds polite rather than demanding. Another useful opener is «お願いします。», which means "Please. / I'd like to ask a favor." Think of it as a gentle way to signal that a request is coming. You can say it first, then add your specific request. Practice both lines slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep your voice calm and friendly. A small pause after the opener can make the request feel less sudden.

Asking for Notes and Small Help

Not every favor is about photos. In a class or study setting, you may want to borrow someone's notes. «ノートを借りてもいいですか。» is a full line that means "May I borrow your notes?" Say it clearly and politely. If you need only a small amount of help, use «ちょっと手伝ってもらえますか。», which means "Could you help me a little?" This line is useful when the task is short and simple. Notice that both lines are questions, so your intonation should rise slightly at the end. Before you speak, decide what you need: notes or a little help. Then choose the matching line. Practice each line two or three times. If you are nervous, speak a little more slowly and focus on clear endings. Politeness in Japanese often comes from the choice of words and a calm tone, not from speaking loudly.

    Understanding a Friendly Reply

When you make a request, the other person may agree and ask for more information. In «はい、いいですよ。どこで撮りますか。», the speaker says a full line that means "Sure, that's fine. Where should I take it?" This reply shows agreement and then asks where. If you asked for a photo, you can answer with «あの建物の前でお願いします。», which means "In front of that building, please." This tells the person the location. Then the other person may say «わかりました。はい、チーズ!», which means "Got it. Okay, say cheese!" This is a friendly signal that the photo is about to be taken. Listen for the agreement first, then the question. When you answer, give a clear place. If you are the person taking the photo, you can use «はい、いいですよ。どこで撮りますか。» and «わかりました。はい、チーズ!» as your lines. Practice the pair so the exchange feels smooth.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Photo Request Exchange

Imagine you are traveling alone and want a photo in front of a building. A friendly stranger is standing nearby. You will play both roles: first the person asking, then the person helping. The four dialogue lines are playable, so you can listen and repeat each one.

Your task: Say the request line from «すみません、写真を撮ってもらえますか。» as the person asking. Then switch roles and say the reply from «はい、いいですよ。どこで撮りますか。» as the helper. After that, say the location line from «あの建物の前でお願いします。» as the person asking, and finish with the friendly line from «わかりました。はい、チーズ!» as the helper. Speak each line out loud once, then repeat the whole exchange one more time without looking at the text.

    2

    Understand the Helper's Reply

Imagine you have just asked a stranger to take your photo. You hear the helper's reply and need to understand what they are asking. This task checks whether you understand the meaning of the recorded dialogue lines.

Your task: Read the request line from «すみません、写真を撮ってもらえますか。», which means "Excuse me, could you take a picture for me?" Now read the helper's reply from «はい、いいですよ。どこで撮りますか。», which means "Sure, that's fine. Where should I take it?" Answer these questions in English: (1) Does the helper agree to take the photo? (2) What information does the helper ask for? Then say the location line from «あの建物の前でお願いします。» as the person asking, and say the helper's final line from «わかりました。はい、チーズ!» as the helper.

    3

Recall the Lines with Correct Roles

Imagine two short scenes. In scene one, you ask a stranger for a photo. In scene two, you ask a classmate for notes. You will recall the lines and keep the roles correct. The photo dialogue lines are playable, so you can check your recall against the recording.

Your task: Without looking at the text, say the photo request from «すみません、写真を撮ってもらえますか。». Then say the helper's reply from «はい、いいですよ。どこで撮りますか。». Next, say the notes request from «ノートを借りてもいいですか。». Finally, say the small-help request from «ちょっと手伝ってもらえますか。». After you finish, check which lines are requests and which line is a reply. Say the reply line one more time as the helper.

    Common questions

Can I use these lines with anyone?

These lines are polite and can be used in many everyday situations, such as asking a stranger for a photo or asking a classmate for notes. However, the right choice depends on the situation. For example, «すみません、写真を撮ってもらえますか。» is about a photo, while «ノートを借りてもいいですか。» is about notes. Listen to the context and choose the line that matches what you need. When you are unsure, a calm and friendly tone helps.

How do I know if the other person agrees?

Listen for a clear agreement followed by a question. In «はい、いいですよ。どこで撮りますか。», the speaker agrees and then asks where to take the photo. That tells you the request was accepted. If you hear a question like that, answer with a clear location, such as «あの建物の前でお願いします。». Then wait for a friendly signal like «わかりました。はい、チーズ!» before you relax and smile. If you do not hear agreement, you can repeat your request politely or ask again later.
