In this workshop you will practice a short hotel-style exchange about a wake-up call. You will learn how to make the request, give a time, and confirm what you heard. Each native example is a recording you can listen to and repeat. You will start with a guided exchange, then check your understanding of a reply, and finally recall the whole exchange with the roles switched.
Making the request
Start with the polite request. «モーニングコールをお願いします。» means "I'd like a wake-up call, please." You can also include the time in the same request: «朝7時にモーニングコールをお願いします。» means "I'd like a wake-up call at 7 AM, please." If you are speaking to someone and want to get their attention first, use «すみません、モーニングコールをお願いします。», which means "Excuse me, I'd like a wake-up call, please." Notice that the request stays the same; only the opening word changes. Practice saying each line slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep your voice calm and polite, as if you are speaking to hotel staff.
Giving and confirming the time
After the request, staff may ask for the time. «はい、何時ですか。» means "Yes, what time?" You can answer with just the time: «7時でお願いします。» means "7 o'clock, please." You can also give more detail: «明日の朝7時でお願いします。» means "Tomorrow at 7 AM, please." Staff may then repeat the time to check: «7時ですね。承知しました。» means "7 o'clock, right? Understood." If the time is correct, you can confirm with «はい、大丈夫です。», which means "Yes, that's fine." Listen for the repeated time in the staff reply and compare it with what you said.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Guided hotel exchange
Imagine you are a guest at a hotel front desk. You want a wake-up call. Your partner will play the staff member.
Your task: Read your part aloud. Guest: «すみません、モーニングコールをお願いします。» Staff: «はい、何時ですか。» Guest: «明日の朝7時でお願いします。» Staff: «7時ですね。承知しました。» Guest: «はい、大丈夫です。» Then switch roles and read the exchange again.
Choose the right reply
You are the guest. The staff member has just asked you a question. Listen to or read the staff line and choose the best guest reply.
Your task: Staff: «はい、何時ですか。» Which guest reply fits? A: «7時でお願いします。» B: «はい、大丈夫です。» C: «7時ですね。承知しました。» Say your choice aloud, then say the full reply.
Recall with roles switched
Now you will recall the exchange from memory. Your partner will play the guest, and you will play the staff member.
Your task: Guest: «すみません、モーニングコールをお願いします。» You: «はい、何時ですか。» Guest: «明日の朝7時でお願いします。» You: «7時ですね。承知しました。» Guest: «はい、大丈夫です。» Say your staff lines aloud without looking at the text if you can.
Common questions
Can I use the short request without a time?
Yes. «モーニングコールをお願いします。» is a complete polite request for a wake-up call. If you already know the time, you can include it as in «朝7時にモーニングコールをお願いします。».
What should I say if the staff member repeats the wrong time?
The recordings here show a correct confirmation with «はい、大丈夫です。». If the repeated time is wrong, you would need to give the time again, but this workshop does not teach a correction phrase, so practice only the correct exchange shown in the recordings.
