Ask for a Library and Wi-Fi: Beginner Japanese Speaking Practice

Practice asking where a library is and whether Wi-Fi is available, using short recorded Japanese lines and clear English guidance.

In this workshop you will practice two simple, useful conversations in Japanese. First, you will ask where a library is and understand a short direction answer. Then you will ask about Wi-Fi and understand a short yes answer. Each native line is shown with a recording reference, and the English meaning is explained before you practice. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so use the answer checks to judge your own speaking.

    Asking where a library is

Start with a very short question. «図書館はどこですか。» means "Where is the library?" This is a direct, simple way to ask for a library. A slightly longer version is «公立図書館はどこですか。», which means "Where is the public library?" The word for public library is a little longer, but the question pattern is the same. When you want to be polite before asking, use «すみません、公立図書館はどこですか。», which means "Excuse me, where is the public library?" The beginning of that line gets the listener's attention, and the rest asks the question. In a fictional scene, imagine you are standing near a station and you need a library. You can begin with the polite line, then listen for the answer. A possible answer is «駅の前にあります。歩いて五分です。», which means "It is in front of the station. It is a five-minute walk." Notice that the answer gives a location and a short walking time. The location is in front of the station, not a turn instruction. When you practice, say the question clearly and keep your voice calm. If you are the listener, focus on the place word and the time word.

    Asking about Wi-Fi

The second conversation is about Wi-Fi. «ここにWi-Fiはありますか。» means "Is there Wi-Fi here?" This is a simple yes-or-no question. If you want to ask about cost, use «Wi-Fiは無料ですか。», which means "Is the Wi-Fi free?" The question pattern is short and useful in many indoor places. In a fictional scene, imagine you are inside a small cafe or a public building. You ask «ここにWi-Fiはありますか。», which means "Is there Wi-Fi here?" A possible answer is «はい、あります。無料です。», which means "Yes, there is. It is free." The answer begins with a yes word, then confirms that the Wi-Fi is free. When you practice, listen for the yes word first, then listen for the word for free. If you are the speaker, say the question with a rising intonation at the end. If you are the listener, answer with the full recorded line so you can hear the natural rhythm.

    Using the recordings in role-play

You can use these recordings in two separate role-plays. In the first role-play, one person asks for a library and the other person gives the short direction answer. In the second role-play, one person asks about Wi-Fi and the other person gives the short yes answer. The roles are customer or visitor for the question, and staff or local person for the answer. You can play both roles by replaying the audio and copying the line. Do not worry about speed at first. Say each line slowly, then say it again at a natural speed. The goal is to understand the question and the answer, not to add new words. Use the answer checks after each exercise to see whether you chose the right line for the right situation.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    すみません、公立図書館はどこですか。

Excuse me, where is the public library?
    B

    駅の前にあります。歩いて五分です。

It is in front of the station. It is a five-minute walk.

    ここにWi-Fiはありますか。

    Is there Wi-Fi here?
    B

    はい、あります。無料です。

Yes, there is. It is free.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask for the library

Imagine you are a visitor near a station. You need to find a library. You will ask the question, then listen to the answer.

Your task: Play the role of the visitor. Say the polite question «すみません、公立図書館はどこですか。». Then play the answer «駅の前にあります。歩いて五分です。» and listen for the location and the walking time. After that, switch roles: play «すみません、公立図書館はどこですか。» as the audio and answer with «駅の前にあります。歩いて五分です。» yourself.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the right answer

Imagine you are a staff member or a local person. A visitor asks you a question, and you need to choose the correct recorded reply.

Your task: Read the situation. A visitor asks «ここにWi-Fiはありますか。», which means "Is there Wi-Fi here?" Choose the best reply from these two recorded lines: «はい、あります。無料です。» or «駅の前にあります。歩いて五分です。». Say your chosen line aloud. Then check the answer below.

    3

    Recall with correct roles

Imagine two short scenes. In scene one, a visitor asks for a library and a local person answers. In scene two, a visitor asks about Wi-Fi and a staff member answers.

Your task: Without looking at the lines, say the question for scene one. Then say the answer for scene one. Next, say the question for scene two. Then say the answer for scene two. Use the recordings to check yourself after you speak.

    Common questions

Can I use the short library question instead of the polite one?

Yes. «図書館はどこですか。» means "Where is the library?" and «公立図書館はどこですか。» means "Where is the public library?" Both are short questions. «すみません、公立図書館はどこですか。» adds a polite beginning, so it is useful when you want to get someone's attention before asking. Choose the line that fits the situation you imagine.

How do I know whether the answer is about a place or a turn?

Listen for the place word in the answer. «駅の前にあります。歩いて五分です。» means "It is in front of the station. It is a five-minute walk." This tells you a location and a walking time. It does not tell you to turn right. If you hear a place word, treat it as a location, not as a direction instruction.
