Free lesson path Phrase audioNo sign-up needed

In this workshop, you will practice asking for a bicycle rental in Japanese. You will learn how to ask where you can rent a bicycle, whether rental bicycles are available, and how much the fee is. You will also practice understanding replies about location and price. The recordings provide native examples for each step. You will do three tasks: a guided exchange, a reply comprehension choice, and a recall task with correct roles. Each task includes an answer or self-check so you can confirm your understanding.

Asking Where to Rent a Bicycle

To ask where you can rent a bicycle, use the question «自転車はどこで借りられますか。». This means 'Where can I rent a bicycle?' You can also ask if rental bicycles are available with «レンタサイクルはありますか。», which means 'Do you have rental bicycles?' When you want to get someone's attention first, you can say «すみません、自転車はどこで借りられますか。», which means 'Excuse me, where can I rent a bicycle?' A common reply is «駅の近くにレンタサイクルがありますよ。», which means 'There is a rental bicycle shop near the station.' Notice that «駅の近くにレンタサイクルがありますよ。» tells you the location of the shop, not a direction to turn. Practice saying «自転車はどこで借りられますか。» and «レンタサイクルはありますか。» aloud. Then imagine you are at a station and want to rent a bicycle. Use «すみません、自転車はどこで借りられますか。» to ask a staff member. After they reply with «駅の近くにレンタサイクルがありますよ。», you can thank them and go to the shop.

    Asking About the Fee

After you find the rental shop, you may want to ask about the cost. Use «料金はいくらですか。» to ask 'How much is the fee?' If you want to know the price for a specific duration, you can ask «一時間でいくらですか。», which means 'How much is it for one hour?' A possible reply is «一時間三百円です。一日は千五百円です。», which means 'It is 300 yen for one hour. For a full day, it is 1,500 yen.' Notice that «一時間三百円です。一日は千五百円です。» gives two prices: one for an hour and one for a full day. When you hear «一時間三百円です。一日は千五百円です。», you can decide which option you want. Practice asking «料金はいくらですか。» and «一時間でいくらですか。». Then imagine you are at the rental shop and want to know the price. Ask «料金はいくらですか。» or «一時間でいくらですか。» and listen for the answer.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Renting a Bicycle

You are at a station and want to rent a bicycle. You see a staff member. You will ask where you can rent a bicycle, then ask about the fee.

Your task: First, greet the staff member and ask «すみません、自転車はどこで借りられますか。». The staff member replies with «駅の近くにレンタサイクルがありますよ。». Then ask «料金はいくらですか。». The staff member replies with «一時間三百円です。一日は千五百円です。». Practice saying your lines aloud. If you are working with a partner, one person plays the customer and the other plays the staff member. Then switch roles.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Correct Response

You will hear or read a question and choose the correct reply from two options. The questions and replies are from the recordings.

Your task: Question 1: You hear «自転車はどこで借りられますか。». Which reply is correct? Option A: «駅の近くにレンタサイクルがありますよ。». Option B: «一時間三百円です。一日は千五百円です。». Question 2: You hear «料金はいくらですか。». Which reply is correct? Option A: «駅の近くにレンタサイクルがありますよ。». Option B: «一時間三百円です。一日は千五百円です。». Write down your answers, then check the answer key below.

    3

Recall and Role Swap: Asking and Answering

You will recall the questions and replies from memory, then swap roles with a partner if you have one. If you are alone, you can play both roles by reading the lines aloud.

Your task: First, without looking at the recordings, say the question for asking where to rent a bicycle. Then say the reply about the shop near the station. Next, say the question for asking the fee. Then say the reply with the prices. After you finish, swap roles: the person who was the customer now plays the staff member and vice versa. The customer still asks first, and the staff member still replies. Do not change the order of the exchange.

    Common questions

Can I use these phrases if I am not at a station?

Yes. The phrase «自転車はどこで借りられますか。» asks where you can rent a bicycle in general. The reply «駅の近くにレンタサイクルがありますよ。» mentions a shop near the station, but you can use the question anywhere. If you are in a different area, you can still ask «自転車はどこで借りられますか。» and listen for a location that is relevant to you.

What if I want to rent for more than one hour?

You can ask «料金はいくらですか。» to find out the fee. The reply «一時間三百円です。一日は千五百円です。» gives a price for one hour and a price for a full day. If you need a different duration, you can ask «一時間でいくらですか。» to check the one-hour price. You can use the full-day price from «一時間三百円です。一日は千五百円です。» as a reference.
