In this workshop you practice a short, realistic exchange about directions. You will hear a person ask how to reach the center, listen to the answer, check the answer, and then take both roles yourself. The focus is listening carefully and replying with the exact phrases you have practiced. You do not need to invent new sentences. You only need to recognize the key words and repeat the lines in the right order.
Key direction words to recognize
Before the dialogue, learn four short building blocks. «a destra» means on the right or to the right. «a sinistra» means on the left or to the left. «sempre dritto» means straight ahead or straight on. «Gira a destra.» means Turn right. Listen for the difference between the direction phrase and the turn command. When you hear «a destra» or «a sinistra», picture the side being named. When you hear «Gira a destra.», picture yourself turning right.
The asking-and-answering scene
Now listen to a short scene. A traveler asks for help with «Scusi, per il centro?». The other person answers with «Vai sempre dritto, poi gira a destra alla banca.». The traveler checks the answer by repeating it as «Sempre dritto e poi a destra alla banca?». The other person confirms and adds a final detail with «Sì, esatto. Poi è a sinistra, davanti al museo.». Notice the order: first the question, then the route, then a check, then confirmation with a location. This order helps you follow the conversation even if you do not understand every single sound. Focus on the direction words you already know: «sempre dritto», «Gira a destra.», and «a sinistra».
How to practice speaking
Play each recording and repeat it aloud. Keep your voice calm and clear. For «Scusi, per il centro?», practice a polite, questioning tone. For «Vai sempre dritto, poi gira a destra alla banca.» and «Sì, esatto. Poi è a sinistra, davanti al museo.», practice a helpful, steady tone. For «Sempre dritto e poi a destra alla banca?», practice a checking tone that rises slightly at the end. Then try the whole scene: play the traveler's lines and speak the other person's lines, then switch. You can pause the audio whenever you need. Speaking slowly and correctly is better than speaking fast and unclearly.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Scusi, per il centro?
Excuse me, how do I get to the center?Vai sempre dritto, poi gira a destra alla banca.
Go straight ahead, then turn right at the bank.Sempre dritto e poi a destra alla banca?
Straight ahead and then right at the bank?Sì, esatto. Poi è a sinistra, davanti al museo.
Yes, exactly. Then it is on the left, in front of the museum.Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided exchange: follow the route
You will hear a traveler ask for directions and another person answer. Listen to the whole scene once without speaking.
Your task: Play the scene again. After the question «Scusi, per il centro?», pause and say the answer «Vai sempre dritto, poi gira a destra alla banca.» aloud. Then continue and say the final line «Sì, esatto. Poi è a sinistra, davanti al museo.» aloud when it is your turn.
Reply comprehension: choose the correct meaning
Read or listen to each recorded line and decide what it tells you to do or where something is.
Your task: For «Gira a destra.», decide whether it means Turn right or on the right. For «a destra», decide whether it means on the right or Turn right. For «sempre dritto», decide whether it means straight ahead or turn left.
Recall and role switch
You will now take both roles in the direction scene. Use only the lines you have practiced.
Your task: First, play the traveler's lines and speak the other person's lines: answer with «Vai sempre dritto, poi gira a destra alla banca.» and finish with «Sì, esatto. Poi è a sinistra, davanti al museo.». Then switch roles: speak the traveler's lines «Scusi, per il centro?» and «Sempre dritto e poi a destra alla banca?» while the recording plays the other person.
Common questions
What is the difference between «a destra» and «Gira a destra.»?
«a destra» means on the right or to the right. «Gira a destra.» means Turn right. One names the direction, and the other gives the turn command. Listening for this difference helps you understand whether someone is naming a side or telling you to turn.
How can I practice if I am alone?
Play the recordings and pause after each line. Repeat the line aloud, then play the next line. You can speak one role while the recording plays the other, then switch roles. This gives you practice with both asking and answering without needing a partner.
