This workshop gives you active speaking practice with a short Italian takeaway exchange. You will order a margherita, say you want it to go, ask for a container, and understand the reply. You can play both roles with audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys to check yourself. The recordings are your model: listen, repeat, then use them in the tasks.

    The Takeaway Exchange

In this scene, a customer orders a margherita and chooses takeaway. The staff member asks whether the customer is eating there or taking away. The customer chooses to go and asks for a container. The staff member agrees and gives the price. The key contrast is between eating at the place and taking the food away. The phrase for taking away is the one you will use when you do not plan to eat there. The phrase for a container is useful when you want your food packed. Listen to the whole exchange first, then repeat each line after the recording.

    Meaning of the Key Lines

Before you speak, make sure you understand each line you will use. The customer's order line means that the speaker would like to order a margherita. The staff member's question asks whether the customer is eating there or taking away. The customer's reply means that the customer wants the food to go and asks for it to be put in a container. The staff member's answer means that this is fine and gives the price. The short takeaway line means that the speaker will take it to go. The question about taking it away asks whether it is possible to take the food away. The question about here or takeaway asks the customer to choose between eating there and taking the food away. The request about a container asks whether the other person can put the food in a container.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    Buonasera, vorrei ordinare una margherita.

Good evening, I would like to order a margherita.
    B

Certo. La mangia qui o da asporto?

Certainly. Are you eating here or taking away?
    A

Da asporto, per favore. Me la può mettere in un contenitore?

To go, please. Can you put it in a container for me?
    B

Sì, va bene. Sono cinque euro.

Yes, that's fine. It's five euros.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided Exchange: Order and Choose Takeaway

You are the customer in a takeaway scene. The staff member is ready to take your order. Use the recordings as your model and say your lines aloud.

Your task: Read the customer's part. Start with your order: «Buonasera, vorrei ordinare una margherita.». Then, when the staff member asks «Certo. La mangia qui o da asporto?», answer with «Da asporto, per favore. Me la può mettere in un contenitore?». After the staff member replies «Sì, va bene. Sono cinque euro.», you are finished. If you are working with a partner, swap roles and repeat, but keep the same order of lines.

    2

    Reply Comprehension: Here or Takeaway?

You hear the staff member ask whether you are eating there or taking away. You need to choose the correct customer reply for a takeaway order.

Your task: The staff member asks «Certo. La mangia qui o da asporto?». Which customer reply fits a takeaway order? Option A: «Da asporto, per favore. Me la può mettere in un contenitore?». Option B: «Buonasera, vorrei ordinare una margherita.». Say your chosen line aloud, then check the answer key.

    3

    Recall with Correct Roles

Now recall the exchange from memory. Keep the customer and staff roles correct, and keep the lines in the same order as the recordings.

Your task: Say the customer's order line from memory. Then say the staff member's here-or-takeaway question. Then say the customer's takeaway and container reply. Then say the staff member's price reply. If you are working with a partner, one person says the customer lines and the other says the staff lines. Swap roles and repeat.

    Common questions

Can I practice both roles by myself?

Yes. You can play the customer and the staff member with the audio. There is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys in each exercise to check your lines and your order.

What should I listen for in the recordings?

Listen for the order line, the here-or-takeaway question, the takeaway reply with the container request, and the price reply. These four moments show the main shape of the exchange.
