Toasts and drink offers are short, high-frequency moments in German conversation. In this workshop you will say toasts aloud, understand a friendly reply, and practice a short exchange between a host and a guest. You will use the recorded lines as your model and then perform the roles yourself. The goal is confident, polite delivery, not perfect grammar.
Say the toast clearly
A toast is a short spoken wish. The recordings give you several common toasts. «Prost!» is a general cheer used when glasses meet. «Zum Wohl!» is a health wish, often said to someone you are celebrating. «Auf dich!» directs the wish to the other person, and «Auf uns!» includes both speakers. «Prost! Auf dein neues Projekt!» adds a specific occasion: a new project. Say each line slowly, then at normal speed. Keep your glass raised and look at the person you are toasting. The exact wording matters less than a warm, clear voice.
Understand a friendly reply
After a toast, the other person often replies. «Danke, gleichfalls! Prost!» thanks the speaker, returns the wish, and toasts again. Notice that the reply does not introduce a new topic; it stays with the toast. In a host-and-guest scene, the host may ask a polite question. «Möchtest du noch etwas trinken?» offers another drink. A guest can decline warmly with «Nein, danke. Ich bin gut versorgt.», which says no thanks and explains that the guest is already well taken care of. These two lines form a complete, polite exchange.
Practice both roles
You can play both roles with the recordings. First, listen to the toast line and repeat it. Then listen to the return toast and repeat it. Next, listen to the host question and the guest refusal, and repeat each one. Finally, perform the whole exchange aloud: say the toast, answer with the return toast, ask the drink question, and give the polite refusal. Then swap roles with your partner so each of you speaks the other person's parts. Swapping roles changes who speaks each part, not the order of the recorded exchange: toast, return toast, drink offer, polite refusal.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided toast exchange
You are at a small celebration with a colleague. You have just finished a project together. Your partner will play the colleague.
Your task: Raise your glass and say the toast from «Prost! Auf dein neues Projekt!». Your partner replies with «Danke, gleichfalls! Prost!». Then both of you say «Prost!» together. Repeat the exchange twice, keeping the same roles: you give the toast, your partner returns it.
Choose the right reply
You are a guest at a friend's home. Your friend, the host, asks you a polite question. You hear the host line and must choose the best guest reply.
Your task: Listen to «Möchtest du noch etwas trinken?». Then choose the correct response: (a) «Nein, danke. Ich bin gut versorgt.», or (b) «Prost! Auf dein neues Projekt!». Say the correct line (a) aloud with a polite, declining tone. Then listen to «Möchtest du noch etwas trinken?» again and say «Nein, danke. Ich bin gut versorgt.» once more, smoothly.
Recall the exchange from memory
You are hosting a small gathering. A guest has just arrived and you have offered a drink. You will now perform the exchange without looking at the lines.
Your task: Say the toast from «Prost! Auf dein neues Projekt!» from memory. Your partner answers with «Danke, gleichfalls! Prost!». Then you ask the host question from «Möchtest du noch etwas trinken?» and your partner replies with the guest refusal from «Nein, danke. Ich bin gut versorgt.». Finally, both of you say «Prost!».
Common questions
Do I need to understand every word in the recordings?
No. Start by matching each recorded line to its English meaning. «Prost!» is a general cheer, «Zum Wohl!» is a health wish, and «Nein, danke. Ich bin gut versorgt.» is a polite refusal. Once you can say the lines with the right tone, the individual words become easier.
Can I practice alone without a partner?
Yes. Play a recording, repeat the line aloud, then play the next recording and repeat that line. You can say both the host and guest parts yourself. There is no automatic assessment, so use the success criteria to check your own delivery and order.
